That's 1 thing the rest of the comp don't understand about this rivalry. It didn't start in 1997 nor did it start in 1991. Port are the SANFLs Collingwood. Anyone that supports a SANFL team either love Port, or hate them with the fiercest passion. Add to that the covert attempt to squeeze into the AFL and there is no rivalry like it. It's to bad that for the last couple seasons these teams are in 2 different places developmentally. It's hard to get as excited when you know your team are going to be creamed Anyway thank you for putting the spotlight on our state. Great video as always guys. Good summary of the recent history, the Crows formation, and the Port Adelaide transition to the AFL. You missed the fact that Port also won the first showdown at Adelaide Oval, You've also totally missed the significance of the hatred for Port Adelaide pre-1990. Port have not only been super successful, but they had competed in half of the grand finals ever played in the SANFL. They also didn't win a lot of early days flags like Norwood did, instead most were won when the comp was closer to full strength. This on-going dominance and strength meant that Port were every SANFL clubs greatest rival. Yes Norwood was Ports, but every other club's biggest rival was Port. The competiton was completely rooted around the ideal of you loved or hated Port. I lived it going to GF's in the 80's with a bus load of others all cheering for whomever was playing Port, except the Port fans. The sheer hatred of Port was already phenomenal, and was like a powder keg that exploded when the PAFC tried to move into the AFL. That hatred is and has always been far more extreme than any other rivalry, and the creation of the amalgamated Crows team, captured the Port Vs the rest mentality and meant from day 1, the rivalry was already number 1. Forget just 25 years of SA clubs AFL existence, this is a rivalry forged over 150 years, and is perfectly encapsulated in the Port Vs the rest structure that is the Crows V Port.

Pretty much. However footy fans were excited to see AFL in SA in the first year of the Crows and Port fans did have some interest in the inaugural Crows side as a few Port players from 1990 ascended from to the AFL Crows team. Keep in mind that the Crows had no reserves side, so the players who weren't selected for the Crows matches were sent back to their respective SANFL side to get match time. If I recall Port had up to 6 players playing for the Crows from year 1.

I honestly don't think the whole rivalry and dynamic between Port and Adelaide would work in the same way if they had gone with the Sharks and Green, Blue and White. That is a pretty good summary, however, I think it would be great to update the story by covering why Port have the catch phrase and pre-game song of "Never tear us apart". It is the story of jealousy and pettiness by other SANFL clubs who, via the SANFL, actively tried to sabotage Port Adelaide (both AFL and SANFL teams) by setting rules in place that effectively served to split the two Port teams. (I am forever p*ssed off that Max Basheer has his name on a grandstand at the Adelaide Oval) Thankfully, that rubbish is now over. Port is the only club team from outside the VFL to join the AFL - all the rest are composites, and our history speaks for itself.

Scumbag club with a stolen history that should've gone broke years ago if not for the AFL and SANFL. Port fans should be worshiping the Crows because they're the reason they still exist and are somewhat relevant.

🤣 port backstabbed Norwood and the SANFL. Norwood paid half of ports debt allowing them to continue, you would’ve liquidated the club had Norwood not rescued you! Additionally, Norwood and port were offered afl licences, but refusal at the time eventuates into the crows. Then port, the greedy bastards, backstabbed the SANFL and made a bid. Not to mention they let the maglie die that day, no one that supports the magpies truly, goes to many (or any) power games, and vice versa. It needs to be said, the ‘magpies’ are the power ressies. End of.

Utter garbage. Port played Judas on the SANFL. Once West Coast entered a SANFL entry was inevitable and became a phase of brokering the best entry deal. It was an open agreement amongst the 10 clubs that an entry would be undertaken with the support of the SANFL,whether that be a composite,Port,Norwood or other. Norwood was offered a licence but respectfully declined. Port breeched that process and was rightfully ostracised and as punishment for it’s duplicity should never have received the second licence.

Hang on if you lot hadn’t tried to stab the sanfl and other clubs in the back, and back door it in to the VFL, The VFL would’ve gone broke, the sanfl would’ve become the premier Australian rules comp, would’ve kept all sanfl clubs and wouldve invited other clubs to join, so we’ll done port Adelaide for single handedly killing the sanfl, and if that wasn’t enough you did it again by merging with the Port Adelaide Magpies fc and turning your sanfl team in to your afl reserves team further diluting the sanfl So really all you did was kill the SANFL the league where your club holds its history
