So to clarify some stuff since Twitch chat tends to go for speed over accuracy: Richthofen's Jasta 11 was called "The Flying Circus" due to the fact that they would indeed colour their planes in bright garish colours. The chat accurately mentioned that only kills that could be confirmed from ground were counted but that was not the only reason they chose to do this. It was also for the morale factor. The soldiers in the trenches could see the dogfight overhead and it was immense boost or hit to morale (depending on side ofc) when the ace would shoot down a plane or be shot down. The reason they could afford to do this is that shooting the plane from the ground was basically impossible at normal altitudes and camo doesnt help during low flight so this stage so it truly was like two completely separate wars. Someone was confused about the plane not being a triplane but only biplane. For most of his service he was flying using the Albatros planes which were biplanes and only near his death he switched to the Fokker triplane. Which is why at start he flies the Albatros. As for the "not German - Prussian". Thats kinda like saying "he wasnt British, he was English". Prussia at this point could be considered the most german part of the German empire to be honest. Just cause its in poland nowadays, doesnt mean that the people who lived there were Polish. Good half the people in Prussia were germans and Manfred was certainly a German as was his family. You were correct about the machine guns timer. These guns were made in a way that they would only fire if the propeller is out of the way. At least usually that is :D Bloody April details - Compared to the massive British loses of 245 airplanes, the Germans only lost 66, so about 1 airplane for about 4.5. That being said despite the overwhelming loses, the British succeeded at their primary objective of supporting the ground troops via recoinnesance, aerial photographs and bombing. Technically Jasda 11 shot down 89 planes so his squad and not just him on his own. Over his whole service he officially shot down about 80 planes which seems to be accurate count, unofficially it might be as high as 100. For comparison the highest scorers on the Entente side were René Fonck with 75 (and unofficial also around 100) and Billy Bishop with 72 for France and Canada respectively. Not sure who the Green Glasses Guy is supposed to be, already did research looking into anyone who might have used green tinted glasses but came up short so I guess its a generic bad guy. Its certainly not Roy Brown (the guy who "shot" him down) since he looks nothing like him. Fun fact - the chance that Brown actually hit is near zero since the timing doesnt match up - its very likely that the Red Baron got shot by a machine gun from the ground while pursuing a plane past the enemy line in low altitudes. (Basically if the pilot shot him, he would have died several minutes sooner than he did so the wound must have came later) The reason for his later issues is a head injury he got above Belgium, it required several head surgeries and he was not supposed to continue flying after sustaining it, a doctor suggestion he ignored. Yeah the ending is sad but also one of those stories of incredible humanity in war. The respect they gave him with that was immense. Another great reaction! Looking forward to what you will check out next :)

This is all correct. The planes also being bright colors initially caught allied pilots by surprise and in certain light conditions blues, reds, oranges, and yellows would blend in with the sky. Greens blent in with the ground from above. Stuff like this naturally occurs in nature aswell and is called counter shading. It was also used on naval vessels during the first world war. This sort of camoflauging and identification went away as ships and planes began using nose art and painting identifiers on the wings and hulls and standardized camo became common

Prussia was a kingom inside German empire. (one of a few) short historical summary Prussians were a baltic tribe that got germanized by Teutonic knights who were in the service of the Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth. Those paintjobs on the planes are accurate for Jasta 11. Jasta 11 was called Richthofen's Flying Circus and their brightly colored paintjobs on their planes were one of the reasons. The pilots wanted to stand out and be seen in the air, not just to recognize each other but for their foes to know who they were against. Look at them as the bright personal heraldry's used by Knights during the medieval period. Also as said in the chat..used to know who got the kills etc. And I saw someone in the chat mention that he thought the Baron flew a Triplane. He did, the Fokker DR.1 but most of his victories were in the Albatross Biplanes like the Albatross D.II, D.III, and D.V, only a handful were ever scored in the Triplane. Officially at the time the kill was given to Capt. Roy Brown, a Canadian pilot as to being the one who killed the Baron. But it was NOT any pilot that shot down the Red Baron, it has been now more or less confirmed by more recent forensic studies etc that it was an Australian ground machine gunner that shot the Baron down and fired the shot that fatally wounded him based on the description of the wound and the angle the bullet hit him and that it could have only come from the ground not Capt. Roy Browns plane.

There is no fighter pilot more famous or as respected as Manfred von Richthofen. He was originally a calvary scout until trench warfare made his unit obsolete, hence the line "Born a soldier from the horseback to the skies". The "Flying Circus" was the nickname given to his larger fighter wing Jagdgeschwader 1 given the brightly colored paint jobs of their aircraft and that they never stayed in one field of battle for long. Richthofen had a tradition where he would celebrate his victories by having a cup made of silver with the date and type of aircraft used engraved on it until he reached 60 victories when the blockade prevented silver from reaching Germany and refused to have cups made of lesser metals as a replacement. He is currently buried at his family gravesite in Wiesbaden, Germany along with his brother Lothar who died in a post-war plane crash. And Ember, Germany is made of small state territories like the USA. Prussia is just one territory that makes up the entirety of Germany. Like Yorkshire in England or Burgundy in France.

cavalry scouts were never made obsolete during ww1 not even on the western front, that is a myth. they were used effectively throughout the war, germany actually increased the number of units that had cavalry scouts on all fronts because of how useful they were. Germany did downsize their total cavalry units, but this had more to do with horse shortages, than cavalry (especually scouts) being obsolete. and as stated before there were more cavalry being used as scouts for other formations.

Idk if chat cleared this up later on or not, but Prussia united the various germanic states into the state we now know as Germany. Before the monarchy was abolished after ww1, Prussians were a large part of the German Empire's military and aristocracy due to Prussia being very militaristic. So much so. It was often said that Prussia was an army with a state.

The Germans called Richthofen der Rote Kampfflieger, the Entente, his enemies, called him the Red Baron. The Barons Jasta 11, became known as the Flying Circus, due to the bright colors they painted their aircraft as well as the fact that they were almost always moving, always being out where fighting was heaviest.

Germany had the edge in WW1 very early on devising tactics for planes to fight each other and specific pilots created the whole doctrine that was used for aviation conflict. Most of the tactics and concepts we know for Dogfights as we knew them from WW2 clips and features all started with the planes of WW1 and the concepts from the Big 3 Aces in Germany. Due to how war was fought in WW1 any major edge in tech was basically shared to keep the war "Fair" as far as the politicians were concerned. The issue was what nation your looking at: Most nations tied the making of the airfield, supply chain, and training to features of the Army, thus most countries made there Air Power an extension of the Army as a support Unit. In Germany they automatically skipped this step and created a brand new system, They wanted the Air to be capable of its own decisions and work together with the Army and Navy depending on its own judgement of where it needs to be and not what was seen only by the infantry perspective (As in infantry will always need help, is it seriously requiring air power or just artillery? Planes were more expensive then company field cannons and ammo as well as it takes months of training for pilots and new planes could take a month to build depending on maker). Germany made "Yasta" divisions which quickly required ground forces to keep talley of Air to Air Victories. Problem is seeing the planes from the ground when they are doing 180 MPH and they are all the same paint its hard to credit who had what. So German pilots learned to paint stuff on the plane to identify themselves easier. Quickly this turned later on when "The Red Barron" got his own Squadron to command, after losing 2, and scoring victories, he painted his plane and requested everyone to do the same. So the color schemes were bright and colorful to give the Pilots credit and instill fear in the enemy who learned of the paints involved. Hense the nickname "Flying Circus" due to the bright colors and acts of skill. The concept of Prussian is from a time from the late 1890s, they didn't change anyone's namesakes or anything till after WW1. After this Prussian is technically the Division of 7 different Nations. They to this day hold the lineage but not the namesake. This Lineage is much less pronounced in the 30s and basically stopped in the 40s. Its like me saying "I am French and Italian" but I was born in America, and so were my parents. Lineage kinda thing. Yasta 11 was all Germany born folk who fought for the German military with aims for glory and potential to get big rewards as pilots were all officers aiming for government positions when they came available. The context is that at this time Prussian's were considered tougher then there alternate born. A aristocratic society headed tward something different. Politics aside that is what caused a lot of chaos in the early 20s for the people of Germany, right after the "Spanish Flu" which killed more personnel then the war did in all nations. The propeller mechanism was designed in Germany and due to a "Fairness of War" claim after Germany's pilots were destroying the competition, they also stated there was a rule of war needed to be fair causing the British and French to get the system, which was shared with everyone as the code stated. Meaning all nations had the blueprints for the contraption. This would be used for all propeller firing systems that came forward, including some unique helicopter designed concepts and more. This system was obsoleted by the Jet age but it is still in conception today and may be of use in future concepts we just don't know. While this was a thing, other nations contributed to Germany as well, such as Italy and France created parachutes and shared the concepts (although they were expensive cause the early designs were complicated), and fire supression systems were moddified into planes from Austria (wasnt really feasable as aircraft became too heavy), doctrines became noted by Aviators themselves.

Loved the video @EmberParadox! Can't wait for the next video Girl! First video of yours that I'm watching and absolutely loving the content Girl! Hello from Prince George's County, Maryland! The Pilot who Shot Manfred von Richtofen down was Arthur "Roy" Brown from Canada of No. 209 Squadron RAF after seeing his Friend and Squadron Commander (Wilfrid Reid "Wop" May) get shot down by Richtofen ended up Shooting May in the Back of his head during a Chase. Brown would later do the Same when he Downed Richtofen, although there's still a Debate about whether or not it was actually Brown who got the Kill as a Postmortem revealed that the Killing blow came from a Machine Gunner on the Ground. The Engine from Richtofen's Fokker DR.1 Triplane is Preserved and on Display at the Imperial War Museum in London and a Replica of the DR.1 was Built and has been Photographed in 2006 at the Berlin Air Show. There have also been 4 Squadrons (Geschwader in German) to have been named in Richtofen's honor. Jagdgeschwader 132 of the Wehrmacht Aviation from April 1st, 1936 to November 1st, 1938; Jagdgeschwader 131 of the Luftwaffe from November 1st, 1938 to May 1st, 1939; Jagdgeschwader 2 of the Luftwaffe from May 1st, 1939 to May 7th, 1945 and Since June 6th, 1954 the First Jet Fighter Squadron of Post-war Germany (at this time, West Germany) Jagdgeschwader 71 (JG 71) led by the Highest Scoring Ace in History, Erich Hartmann Aka the Blonde Knight of Germany. Hartmann had scored 352 Kills during World War Two and had been Captured by the Soviets near the End. Even in his Memoirs, he is often compared to Joan of Arc as the Soviet Prison Guards had R@ped him before he was released to West Germany as The same had happened to Joan of Arc prior to her being burned at the Steak. JG 71 still Operates with the Bundeswehr (Namely the Bundesluft) and flies the Eurofighter Typhoon Multirole Strike Fighter Jets. As for the Paint Schemes of Jasta 11, All I can say is that the Squadron wasn't known as "The Flying Circus" for nothing. Even Hermann Goering had his Plane Painted in the Same shade of Pastel or Baby Blue that his World War Two Luftmarschall Uniform was in and I'm not going into any further detail on him because that's a whole 'nother Can of worms and/or Rabbit Hole to go through. Let me know what you think about this and I'll catch you in your next video Girl!

Interesting bit of mechanical history, the machine guns fired through the propeller using a device called an interruption gear. A simple piece of metal that disengaged the guns when a propellor blade was in front of the guns. Prussia was a part of the German Empire in those days. Nowadays, it’s a part of Poland but the history lives on. Also, though he was famous for the Fokker DR. 1 triplane, Richtofen actually preferred and got his start in the Albatross biplane. The interceptor gear was developed by Anthony Fokker, the same man who invented the DR.1 and later aircraft. Allied aircraft either used thick metal plates to deflect bullets or mounted them up and away from the propeller. A German aircraft that had been shot down over British lines gave them the example of the gear they needed to use nose mounted guns. Ironic history. The plane credited with downing the Baron, the Sopwith Camel, had such a powerful engine the pilot had to keep a firm hand on the control stick otherwise the plane would spin out of control. History would later confirm it was an Australian AA position that downed him.

If I may Ember, if you want a good watch on your own time, not sure if this was mentioned in your chat but if you ever want a good movie, in 2008, there was a German film called The Red Baron. Starring Mathias Schweighofer, and also had Lena Headey and Joseph Fiennes. It's a good watch. Some fun facts, Mathias also was a minor character in Tom Cruise's movie Valkyrie and Mathias had a private screening with Tom for his movie The Red Baron. If this made you cry, I am sure the movie recommendation will do the same. in fairness the soundtrack paired with Richtofen's passing, also hit's extra hard, even for me. While Roy Brown might have been the one credited with his kill, it is also believed that men of the 53rd Battery, 14th Field Artillery Brigade might have fired the fatal shot. Yarnhub's animations have really stepped up as of recently. If you want a more recent one, look up their Battle of 73 Easting video

But they also have some non animated videos that are total tear jerkers, like 1916 (I recommend the official video because it's awesome), and if you know the full story, Aces in Exile, The Price of a Mile and Hearts of Iron make me tear a little as well. If you want to know more about the story behind Sabaton's songs, they have a YT channel called Sabaton History where they explain the history behind all of thrir songs, you can even react to some of those videos, but I have to warn you, some of them are quite long, and some are separated into different parts, with the one about 1916 also has a video about Lenny (from Motorhead).

ok, I feel I have to just give a simplyfied explanation to how the prop guns worked... say there is a single prop... there was a metalic switch with 4 points that made the gun stop shooting everytime it triggered....effectivily just making the gun unable to fire when the blades of the prop was infront of it, thats about it... honestly quite simple, but at that time enginious

This is not historically accurate but I will go ahead and mention it here. When I was younger, Eddie Rickenbacker was as much of a household name as the Red Baron. I thought he might be the rival in the green scarf. I'm not sure if that was the intention of the video. Rickenbacker was the most famous Allied ace of WWI but from what I'm seeing, he's not believed to have ever met von Richtofen in a dogfight.

Sabaton has a tendency of getting most emotional, either tears or pumped, at times both, Uprising us one such, you get pumped about polish resistance against the Nazi germans but also sad that they were abandoned by the allied

The Red Baron is a great song! You’ll be bawling at the end of Sabaton’s cover of 1916 after you saying you were crying at the end of this video. It’s a beautiful ballad about the first day of the battle of the Somme.

No, Amber. This is not the first song that we see from the German pov. If you remember well, “No Bullets Fly” is about the German Pilot escorting and letting the ally plain leave. Yes, the video makes it look like it's about the crew of “The Old Pub”, but the song is about the German pilot. Also, the 89 victories during “Bloody April” was made by the entire Squadron. And yes, they were called Victories and not kills because during WW1, the airplane flew so slow and were so light it was not uncommon for the pilot to manage to land more or less safely and be able to fly again. As see from the Red Baron himself, not being for the shoot he received in the thorax, I'm pretty sure he probably have made it and survive the crash.

It was a different time then...the best things humanity created through society were still honored and treasured and valued then...today, they're looked upon with scorn and amusement. Believing them to be silly and outdated values that we don't need in our 'society' anymore. ....people want to claim we've progressed as a species. MAybe technology wise...but we've lost far too much...regressed or stagnated or morphed into ugly, hateful things, in the process. So I don't know if I can really say we've progressed as a species. Not when over a hundred years ago men could look at the corpse of the one who defeated or ended 80 of their brothers and pay him all due honor and diligence and it would simply be considered a natural or normal thing, instead of the extraordinary event we look back on it as.

Cooked twitch comments. Prussia IS Germany. Prussia was the german kingdom which formed a united Germany. Is like saying: This guy isn't american. He was born in Washington DC. And also, he wasn't polish. The city in which he was born is nowadays in Poland, but it was once part of Prussia/Germany. Germany lost its eastern lands past the river Oder (which is now the modern border between Germayn & Poland) after WW2.

The Red Baron was shot down at some point n 1917 and was shot down. He survived the crash but was struck in the head and suffered believed some brain damage.😢 His plane sadly, did not survive though replicas exist. The original was ripped apart by trophy seeking soldiers. Kaput. It generally means “It’s over.” Or “It’s finished.”

The absolutely nuts part of his kill count is that if he had gotten that much in ww2, he wouldn't even be in the top 100 WW2 German fighter aces, possibly even 150.
