There is ONE thing I do before anything else when visiting a record store, and today I'm explaining why YOU should do this too. I love shopping for vinyl records; even if I don't end up grabbing any, I love visiting these shops on a regular basis. It's part of the hobby! Today we're digging into a habit I have when I visit a shop, be it a new one or a familiar one, and I'll explain why the first thing I do matters for collectors and hobbyists.

Josey is great! They have one in Plano now too. Also, if you’re ever in DFW and closer to Fort Worth, swing by Doc’s Records as well!

A new shop opened in my hometown 3 weeks ago. I had no idea it was there until my wife noticed as we were driving by on Monday. I went on Wednesday. Introduced myself to the shop owner. Had a pleasant conversation with him. Bought a few records and he was interested in my selections. I think he was trying to make mental notes with me and what I bought. Ill be back soon. I would love to get to a point where he is calling me if he gets in some cool used records.

That would be the best! I miss having that kind of hookup. Maybe someday, but the DFW area is so freaking huge it'll be hard to cultivate that level of connection without showing up consistently on a weekly basis.

the important message here is to not be on a secret mission when shopping. the records he enjoys showing in the front of the video were all gained because the shop keeper knew what this guy wanted and valued him as a customer. when you have a guy who often has hundreds of records pass through their hands, curating what might be good for you to buy, that is an advantage better than the new arrivals bin , the way I see it.

Spot on. Developing a working relationship with owners of small shops is truly the best route to go. It gets a bit harder in large metropolitan and urban locations, but it's doable.

@@AndyFenstermaker Forever young is pretty cool, but their prices are a bit crazy on things. They definitely know what they have. Can find some rarities but expect to pay market (or more) for them. Josey is kind of the tried and true in the Dallas metro at least. Good records by white rock lake is pretty decent for new arrivals - especially if you're into a lot of indie rock since they tend to lean toward that. I generally have a tough time finding stuff I want in any stores in TX but every now and then a gem pops up! Also - supposedly next year at Southwest Audio Fest year 2 they are going to have more record dealers. They had 4-5 this year with some pretty decent stock, so will see how that develops. There will also be a record show on July 27 at the Grapevine convention center (ticketed). A little bit of a drive from Plano where I am, but I definitely don't mind. They have them there 3x a year if you've never been.

Heck yes I do this same thing any time I hit up a record store. I recognize that St Arnold Summer Pils can on the shelf. I'm a Houstonian where the brewery resides. So I see you were once based in Pullman, WA. Were you going to school there? Are you still in that region? Crazy things happening there lately making national news.

Oh man. The Kohberger stuff is NUTS. FensePost actually started as a music blog back in 2006 from Pullman, right after I wrapped grad school. Used to ride my bike to Moscow, Idaho from time to time. I moved to TX from western Washington in 2020, but I'm a bit north of you.

Wow!! New arrivals 🙄, I never would have guessed. Thanks for this valuable information, i would have never been able to navigate a record store without it, new arrivals hey, this must be a fancy new thing. Isn't it common sense and common knowledge to look at the new arrivals? I would have thought this wouldn't need mentioning, its kind of like telling someone to drink water if they're thirsty.
@nectarinedreams7208

Eh, I disagree. Most people associate record stores with old music. They either like vintage shit and want to collect it or they're a music enthusiast and want to buy old (and maybe some new) albums on vinyl instead of streaming them. Most people do not look at the new section at all, let alone looking there first. Of course some do, like your regulars who rely on record stores for new product instead of using Amazon, but they're a minority. I think you know all this but you're being difficult.

@@nectarinedreams7208 You're confusing "new arrivals" with "New music" The "new" part refers to "new to the store" not "new to the world" The "new arrivals" section of a record store is the stuff that has recently arrived at the store, that could be anything from the past to the present. If you visit a record store and have dug through the racks, the next time you go to that store you go straight to the "new arrivals" (because you've already looked at everything else) so you want to see what new stuff the store has acquired since your last visit. This is just common sense and doesn't really need to be said. Do you understand? Or Do you still disagree?
