It wasn't until I actually tried the manual's suggestion of picking and mixing codes that I beat the original SMB. Fun fact: The "always stay big" code was mentioned in the game's description, but was noticeably missing in the codes list!! I ended up using a variation of the world select code which gave me 200 game seconds of invincibility which resets when you enter a pipe, but rounds down to the last hundreds digit. It mostly started at 999, at least.

On those cartridges, use rubbing alcohol--though the cart says do not do that. I works better than anything else that people generally have...
