It’s strange how the dolphins are so much of a problem anymore. I’ve fished there since the original pier opened. It’s only been a problem in the last 15 years or so they’ve really been a problem. Your channel is great very professionally done. You and “Fish On” both great channels! Someday I’d like to meet up with you when I come visit Florida again. All my years of fishing though, never caught a Pompano. I was never a big jig fisherman which is probably why.

I had to move up to 15 pound braid for pompano on the pier I fish from, big pompano run down the pier like that and it's too hard to stop them with anything lighter. Also, we have tourists that usually won't move away from the rail which makes things worse. I have a rod with 10 pound braid that I use when the pompano are picky or beach or boat fishing. Sometimes if they're almost around the piling I'll open my bail and they'll swim back out but if tight braid touches the piling it usually breaks.

Great video as usual. I've tried Doc's Goofy Jigs twice (SPI) with no success. I'll try again. Amazing how a lure, or teaser color change can make a difference in getting bit.

I had hoped that pod of dolphins had moved on. They aren't a problem at the bridge at the entrance to Fort DeSoto or at Skyway North. The problem is when you hook a fish you have to horse them up and skim them along the surface which doesn't work with a big fish, and you wind up losing a lot of the bigger fish, and also it isn't as much fun. If the dolphin grabs your fish the best thing is to loosen the drag and let the dolphin chew for 30 seconds or so, you'll usually get your lure back (but not the fish).

Great video Thonny, thanks for sharing. Question, never fished at DeSoto Pier, hope to be there in May or June. How many yards of 10# braid would be good for Mangrove Snappers at this pier? I put on a mono filler before the braid. Thanks for your help. 👍

Hey Thonny, A long time follower. I will be up in Treasure Island from April 6-20th and bringing my 24ft center console boat if you would want to do some offshore fishing or even target areas you know locally. I would love to do a little fishing with you. I will be coming up from Cape Coral. If you ever want to come down here and try some Tarpon fishing, I'd be happy to take you out in my neck of the woods and show you around as well. Feel free to message me if you want.

I came to fish this pier from Ohio. Got connected with a large pompono two days ago, but could not get it on the pier fast enough. My drag was set very loose. A dolphin grabbed it. Went to the pier again today, fished all day long but could not get any pompano to bite. It was very windy on these two days. May I ask how much lb is your main line and your leader? Thanks
@Thonny5 ай бұрын
I know the feeling! I lost a tank that day. That’s part of fishing I guess. Hope you get them next time! I’m running 10lb braid and 20lb flouro leader.
