what test is your main line? and what is a good rod/reel set up for a beginner? i will be surf fishing for spanish in the obx. i go after our mackerel up here in maine but is VERY different than spanish (jigging with sabiki). thanks, channel seems great

Hello! These are all great questions. My main line is 15lb braid test. And a good Rod/Reel for starting out would be a 7ft medium action rod. You can’t go wrong with an Ugly Stik rod. They’re tough and won’t break. As far as reels go, you’ll want to stick anywhere between a 2500 or 3000 series reel. If you go with any of these brands: Diawa Regal LT, Penn Pursuit IV or ShimanoI, you can’t go wrong. These are very good sturdy reels and will last a long time. Just don’t forget to wash off your rod and reel after fishing in saltwater. I hope this helps and tight lines my friend👍

So im a give a bit of advice. Im a weekend warrior but from a fisherman to another ive got some tips for you. So for the record switch that trolling sinker for double swivel egg sinker. You can definitely use a 1oz or 2oz but youll be getting tired from throwing it. You may want to use a 3oz to 4oz so when you cast it , the wieght does all the work. Now you may need to change the rod for the heavier weight. The spoons from the pier store are far superior in my opinion. But like you said any spoon will work. But white and light blue spoons from the pier store are mackeral killers. Flourocarbon is the best for macs but can be pricey. You can get away with 15lb fluorocarbon leader but 20lb is fine. Now when you cast, once it hits the water retrieve a little bit till you feel the weight and let it drop. Now retrieve it at a constant rate. Not too fast or itll go to the top and not too slow as you will get cut off. Just at a constant retrieve speed where it will stay at the middle of the water column. Another method is when it reaches bottom is to retrieve fast for 5 seconds then let it fall for 4 seconds then retreat again repeating the process. One more thing, when casting PLEASE PLEASE be very careful and watch your surroundings because you can and will hook someone or hit someones vehicle. Its happened to me before. Fyi search for skyway fishing pier forums on google. Some good info for tarpon,grouper,snapper,spanish and king mackeral fishing tips.

Bro if you are trying to cast and you are hitting people and cars, you're a Googan that probably shouldn't be giving anyone fishing tips unless they have never fished a day in their life .. especially while sounding narcissistic about it
@David-gd2ci6 ай бұрын
@GrumpysGarageDave I meant I've been hooked before by a googan with a spoon. I've been fishing in that pier for 3 years never hit a car or hooked someone. Narcissistic? I'm just trying to give advice but if I sound Narcissistic I'm sorry I offended you. 😂

Nice video but I have a question...why use a snap swivel? Can't you get away with just a barrel swivel?
@hookedonfishingforreel8 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely! But here’s the difference between a barrel swivel and a ball bearing snap swivel and why I prefer one over the other. A Ball Bearing Swivel will have internal bearings inside to create a smooth rotation that will allow the most freedom and balance in order to control any rolling of lures that have erratic action or rotation to them. You want and need this smooth rotation especially when doing a medium to fast cast retrieve method with a rotating lure. Also, a Ball Bearing Swivel will keep your lure true and prevent it from rolling in the water, which also prevents your line from becoming twisted. Barrel swivels on the other hand have no internal bearings inside. They will not turn as freely and smoothly, but they do give you some degree of movement. They just don’t have the smoothness to correct a fast-running lure as quickly as a ball bearing swivel. There is no internal bearings in them to keep the friction of metal against metal from building up and eventually wearing. Sure! You can use a barrel swivel, but Just keep in mind that it won’t have the smoothness to correct a fast running rotating lure like the ball bearing swivel would. As this minor difference could cause your line to twist at times. I hope this shed some light and helps. By the way, Great question!👍
@paleryder28 ай бұрын
@@hookedonfishingforreel yes, I understand that aspect however I have ball bearing swivels without the snap part. I didn't ask my question well enough. My question is about the snap part. Is there a special reason for using a swivel with a snap as opposed to one without? Thank you for the quick response.
@hookedonfishingforreel8 ай бұрын
I think it’s a matter of preference. They both will get the job done. I have a combination of both in my tackle box as they both have their uses. But the reason I used a ball bearing with snap swivel is just in case I want to switch out lures I can do it with the quickness. As I already have other lures such as diving plugs that are pre rigged with loop knots. I just slip it on and ready to fish. But yes! To answer your question, if you have an inline weighted egg sinker with just Ball Bearing Swivel that will work perfectly. 👍

Hi Derrick, is morning the best time for mackerel fishing?
@hookedonfishingforreel6 ай бұрын
Hello! Great question. They feed best at dawn and dusk. They really like warmer water temps. So summer time is peak time. Hope this helps👍
