I am so proud to be a Fisk Alumnae and the daughter on one also. I grew and matured on this music. It is still wonderful. It still makes me cry. So beautiful. Betty Taylor-Thompson, Ph.D.

Many Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) have choruses like this. The Fisk University Jubilee Singers just happen to be the first, and, therefor, the most famous. I have been blessed to hear two other HBCU choirs in person, such as the Aolians of Oakwood University in Huntsville, AL and the Meistersingers of Tennessee State University which is located in Nashville. It has been almost a couple of decades since I heard those talented the talented artists who comprised the chorus, but I still remember their beautiful God-inspired"slave" songs. Excellent!!👏👏💖💖💖👍👍Btw, I think is is so SAD😒😒😢😢 that currently probably many black Americans(young AND not so young) aren't aware of this RICH and BEAUTIFUL history connected to black American history. This is something to be PROUD OF and to above all, CHERISH. Sigh. Thanks for providing this performance!😍😍😀😀👍👍

1st off, the very reason most HBCUs have choruses like this is because of the huge success of the original 9 and 11 Jubilee Singers. 2nd, I'd like you to keep your eyes and ears open for events surrounding the 150th Anniversary of the Fisk Jubilee Singers coming in 2021. I/we hope to have some of the great HBCU choruses like the Aeolians of Oakwood and Morgan State's amazing group along with, of course, our neighbors from down the street TSU's Meistersingers. It promises to be a grand celebration of American music since Fisk is the "Birthplace of American Music"!

Mr. Cooper: First of all, I am a very, very PROUD graduate of your neighboring HBCU, TSU, and I grew up several blocks from the illustrious Fisk University, so I am very familiar with this wonderful heritage. Keep up the good work, and I hope to attend the glorious 150th Anniversary of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. 👍👍😍😍❤❤

elaine smith I never understood why folks feel the need to preach/ lecture when making a comment. There are probably more people aware of this music than you realize. Just enjoy the music and share the link if you feel led to do so. The dramatic, self righteous sighs are unnecessary.

@@healmyroots This is still America, and I still have something called FREE SPEECH that is guaranteed (at least for now) in our Constitution. Btw, if you don't like/care/irritated by my comments, IGNORE them. It's as simple as that. 🤦‍♀️👀
@MaestroGeo
@MaestroGeo 4 жыл бұрын
@@elainesmith7512 Ms. Smith, for the record, I don't think your comments were preachy, I thought they were on point. As you said so many HBCUs have wonderful choruses with long storied histories. Sometimes I think we don't do enough to promote our excellence. Let's not hide our light!

I never heard of the Fisk Jubilee Singers until now when I attended a black opera called Jubilee a few days ago at the Seattle Opera. I wanted to learn more, so here I am! Although my family migrated from the south (Georgia) to the Pacific NW (Seattle) during the great migration, we are still rooted in our history back home. Of course I’ve heard of Fisk University. My first cousin graduated from there back in the 90’s. But I didn’t know this. I love learning this kind of rich history about my people. I will keep reading to learn more.

Why isn' t it written anywhere that "The Fisk Jubilee Singers" is another and pionnier legitimate band of great singers from the 19th century ? So, far before this one ... When people don' t want to know their own history, when they don' t want to reveal their best historical leaders , and most of all when they hide it though it is their duty, what can we expect from them ? two problems. The original name should never be used, stolen without an additional word that explains the origins ... second problem, they should never perform without thank and recognize the original band who made the most incredible work in that time, far above a good, but simple sugar coated music performance !

I learned about the Jubilee Singers from the PBS documentary. The group in this video is clearly technically very talented, BUT I still didn't like them. It's very subjective, of course, but with the singers in the TV program you could feel their joy, and could understand how people would travel for miles to share that feeling. Every singer here sounded individually very good, but you felt they were doing a job, not experiencing genuinely spiritual feelings. Maybe they were just nervous, performing at the KenCen.

Yea, subjective..I don't know how much you got from the PBS special but the Fisk Jubilee Singers have performed All over the WORLD! Believe you me, the Kennedy Center didn't phase these kids one bit. I think the Jubilees did a fantastic job on this program.
