I fully believe in 17:12. Given how often equipment breaks down at my super busy gym, and the "drive it like you stole it" attitude people have towards gym equipment, yeah, if I was a gym owner, I'd probably also hope the majority of clientele just kept paying the monthly fees but didn't actually show up.

Honestly people are just lazy af who only train in spurts when motivated but ultimately are undisciplined
@satagaming9144 Жыл бұрын
Why does Planet Fitness have a pitiful freeweight selection? Why is it (almost) all machines and cardio? At some point, someone realized that most of the people that really take the gym seriously, that have the discipline to train 3, 4+ times per week for years on end, use primarily freeweights, for a number of reasons (compound movements, psychologically and physiologically rewarding, etc.). So, you design an entire business model around the people who aren't going to be as committed, and market it to beginners and people who don't take the gym as seriously, while shooing away those who do. But, there are a lot of people who started out there, found the self-discipline to keep it up, and are better off for it. It's smart to run a starter gym, most everyone that starts the gym goes nowhere with it.
@noumanintown Жыл бұрын
@@satagaming9144 Fully agree. I started out at a Fit4Less (Canadian budget gym chain, somewhat like Planet Fitness but better, they have barbells, squat racks, even deadlift platforms at some locations) and have still kept my membership active because it's just $15 monthly, there's a 24-hour location literally across the street from my building, and if I want to go workout at midnight, it's nice to have the option whereas my regular "nice gym" is 6am to 9pm only. I feel there must be more people like me with 2 gym memberships, keeping the cheap one for odd hours/convenience. The nice gym has a swimming pool, squash, basketball, fewer people (and way less obnoxious teens) and all sorts of amenities. I use Fit4Less 20% of the time. This is also a pattern I've seen - the cheap gyms are more likely to be 24-hours (typically unstaffed from 8pm to 8am).

I got fooled by the “fat reduction” nonsense. I didn’t know it as a young man, but I had gynecomastia. I was super self conscious about the “fat” on my chest. I joined the military and got in great shape but the “fat” there wouldn’t go away like the rest of the fat. I became obsessed with push ups in an effort to reduce the “fat” in that spot. To my dismay, growing my chest just made it more noticeable since I was just growing the muscle underneath the tissue. I actually got so discouraged I stopped working out and it effectively ended my fitness journey. I literally had abs but size A cup breast essentially. This is why it annoys me when some people give people like Liver King a pass and say “oh no one believes he is natty”. They forget that young people are very impressionable and naive, especially about fitness. These things can be harmful.
@GabzAugustoBR Жыл бұрын
I was very young when a doctor said to my mom that "the fat on his chest isn't going away even if he work out" Well, he was right. At 17yo I got really skinny and the chest fat was still noticible. Till this day I haven't done the surgery and I'm actually afraid to do it and develop body dysmorphia
@protoman1214 Жыл бұрын
@@GabzAugustoBR that sucks man. Not sure what year that doctor told you that, but if he recognized it, there are medicinal interventions that can make it go away at a young age. My understanding is that once you get past a certain age, surgery is the only option. I did get the surgery, it makes a big difference. Its pretty low risk surgery when done properly. I unfortunately did have an unfortunate issue after the surgery, pretty sure the surgeon cut too deep and nicked the underlying pectoral muscle. I have a divot in my chest and feel discomfort. its been two years, I have a discomfort on a day to day basis and have a pending appointment with a orthopedic surgeon for a consultation on what to do about it.

Extremely interesting. Very entertaining to watch as a guy who has been consuming fitness content for only 1 year.

Tip for people wanting to join a fitness club, especially ones that are chains. Put the membership on a card you can easily terminate. I used to go to a 24 hr fitness in Los Angeles (NoHo location to be exact). I lived too far to just walk there so I had to always park in an annoyingly small parking garage and I just hated that process just to get in a workout and the membership was too expensive to begin with (single memberships were $60/month). I decided to terminate my membership after a few months BUT it took multiple visits to the location as well as a "sit down" with the manager. She dragged me into her office and I legit thought she was about to give me a strip tease or something. Basically she was using upper management tactics to try to keep me in the membership. I told her I was not happy with the membership and it was too expensive. Super awkward just to get a membership terminated but these gyms have CREEPY tactics when it comes to them losing members. The manager acted like I was asking to leave a cult. Wouldve loved that lap dance still...she was fine as hell.
