My father had seen this film in a New York cinema,while he was waiting for his ship,in the late '50s... One of the most tender, moving films I have ever watched... The biography of the famous musician, Red Nichols-played by the unforgetable Danny Kaye. Two beautiful scenes from Melville Shavelson's film with Danny Kaye, the so sweet Louis Armstrong and little Susan Gordon...

One of my favorite movies and when I see it, it's about the only time I wish I had children. Red gave up music and went to work as a steel worker to pay for his daughter's treatment of Polio. Wish Red's comeback had been more successful, but time passed him by, but it was worth it to him because of his daughter...That's love.

Just got the soundtrack to The Five Pennies today. I wanted to get a copy of it on CD, while CDs are still in existence! Susan Gordon was wonderful in this film.

I watched this movie several times as a child.

I haven't seen this movie since... probably 1960. I loved the movie. I remember people with polio, but this movie was the first time I learned about the iron lung. A couple years later I remember standing in line to get the polio vaccine. We nearly have polio stamped out now. Not many people remember who devastating that disease can be.
