The use of a comparable cheap but also proven chassis that is widely compatible with the other vehicles used in Stug units is not a bad idea. However this created another vehicle for the same purpose. The inter service "wars" within Nazi Germany's armed forces were absolute crazy and crippling.
@SerAkel3 жыл бұрын
The problem was that Panzer III production was phased out at the point where Flakpanzers were beginning to peak interest. StuG III chassis was similar but they could not afford giving up those as the few still produced were desperately needed. RAF wrecked their plants and they never properly recovered. If there truly were Flakpanzer IIIs, they were converted from existing chassis as Panzer IIIs were laying around in second line duties and repair shops. Large scale production or even conversion was out of the question as there wasn't production capacity nor that many chassis available. Interesting video!

The Wirbelwind was open topped because the flakvierling made such a large amount of smoke when firing that it had to be open topped. I do not know whether there were similar limitations on the Ostwind ...
@shadowcat31633 жыл бұрын
Makes sense, PzIII's were no longer viable as main battel tanks late war. A quick turret change to make it a AA vehicle made sense. The Stug had both III and IV hull types so why not.

I once saw the 1/35 Dragon kit of this and thoughts it was one of those paper proposals, I never knew it was real! Even Chamberlain, Doyle and Jentz missed it in "Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War 2" so it really is that obscure.

I know abaut for a long time. Like the whirlwind with 4 20 mm AA cannons. And some years ago i found several ww2 dvd's with very rare footage,and in one of them the Flakpanzer was very visible and in action. Unfortunably i moved,and during that some boxes got "lost" and one with those dvd's. I was realy mad ( until today still iam) because i knew how rare those footages were/are,some lost forever.

My view is that, if the Nimrod turret could be fitted to a Toldi, the same turret could very well suit the wider, sturdier, Panzer III Fargestahl. I also think Hungaria could've been relevant in realtime by providing Nimrod turrets to the Wehrmacht/Panzerwaffe in exchange for German aid in the form of Pz III and IV vehicles, which were desperately needed. Since TNHP and Pz IV tanks (and some Tigers) were sent to Hungaria, this is not as far fetched as it seems. Both nations would benefit. Germany would by default create the first effective combat vehicle family: MBT: Panzer III, FlaKPanzer III Nimrod, Stug III, StuH III, PiPz III (for the engineers, though this would also make a dandy SPW), BergePanzer III, BeobachtungsPanzer III, BefehlsPanzer III. Missing are the StuPz III (an expedient), and a good PzA . . . even there, the III/IV chassis, a rationalizion of III and IV chasses with an eye toward streamling production, was quite capable of providing a III based solution. Oh! I almost forgot the Pz III tanks used as mother vehicles for the Goliath R/C demo charge. Spare parts commonality. Engine commonality. So attractive. The USA and UK were better able to explore this idea of a common chassis. One convergent line of research led to Hobart's "Funnies".

@bobdickens36742 жыл бұрын
i really dont understand why they didn't use the panzer III chassis. Sure it could've just been that the panzer IV was already the one in mass production and it would be logistically awkward to go back and make panzer IIIs just for a single modification. But couldn't they have just taken early war surplus and done a simple conversion rather than wasting a more combat capable tank chassis?
@mikecampbell75028 ай бұрын
Good comment. I think the PzIV chassis had a larger turret ring so it was easier to fit the AA gun in there, plus by the time the Germans seriously looked at FlakPanzer production the PanzerIII had been replaced by the Panther in production facilities. But this article shows it was possible to fit everything on the PzIII chassis so it would have made sense from a ease of production point of view, to just adapt the PzIII production facilities to make a FlakPanzerIII, if the Germans had the idea earlier.
