I saw the Flaming Lips on the At War With The Mystics tour where, for THE W.A.N.D., Wayne was jumping around with a giant strobe light on his chest. Someone in the audience collapsed, and Wayne handled it really calmly and professionally - stopping the show, getting the lights on, clearing a space around the person so the venue's first aiders could get to them while they waited for an ambulance. The person was ultimately fine as far as I know. Wayne said "Yeah, this happens probably one show out of every ten". So, a 10% seizure rate's clearly not enough to make Wayne drop a particular prop from the set. Which kind of explains this video: Wayne sees seizures as an occupational hazard for Flaming Lips fans.
@schisandra8 жыл бұрын
tostare Effing ridiculous that they continue to use the effing strobe! Do the FL pay for the ambulance and hospital bill? Do they refund the ticket price since the person couldn't stay for the rest of the show? Do they talk to the folks who collapse to (a) apologize and (b) learn what the impact really is? For the FL, it means they stop the show for a little while. For the person, maybe it means something much more serious.
@tostare8 жыл бұрын
I did think it seemed a bit irresponsible. As far as paying for things goes, we're in the UK and so the ambulance and treatment is free (well, funded by the taxpayer). I agree that it would be cool to do some follow up with them, maybe they did for all I know.
@schisandra8 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe the FL only uses the strobe in the UK (or wherever people don't go bankrupt from paying for healthcare...e.g., not the US!). I wonder if the concert ads include a warning about the strobe? Hm.
@joshgause29638 жыл бұрын
Anyone prone to seizures should know better than to attend any rock concert. You don't need a strobe to induce a seizure, lights and sound and the packed shows can do that on their own.
@schisandra8 жыл бұрын
If the band consistently has people faint or have a seizure after they get out the strobe, then I think they should stop using the strobe.
