It'd be more interesting if they toyed with the idea of Pre-Flashpoint memories. Zoom became a living paradox, he has a resistance to timeline alteration. Imagine if this Zoom had memories of the previous continuity, and used it against Barry. If Barry started to recall pre-Flashpoint events, and that became a plot point

Flashpoint was a reboot. This is the New 52.

+Tevya Smolka He did die, but only in that timeline. Barry went back in time at the end of flashpoint to prevent the events of flashpoint, including the event where Zoom died. As for why he doesn't immediately recognize Thawne, my best guess is that over time he started to lose his memory of pre-new 52 events as his memories realigned with this new timeline (similar to how his memories started to be replaced by new memories during flashpoint).
