in this episode I test the difference a set of flatwound strings make on my Danelectro Guitar. UsualLy flatwound strings are associated either with bass or Jazz Guitar, but they where used a lot in the 50's and 60's on every musical genre.

Higher string tension on the wound strings because the core is thicker than round wound cores. Try them on a bright 335 or similar semi hollow, its fun

Very interesting comparison Budda! The flatwounds definitely seem more present and punchy. Not at all what I was expecting honestly. I was always under the impression they'd sound less bright and by that reasoning, less present. I've only ever played flatwounds on bass and I did like them for that purpose. Seems like it's worthwhile to try them on guitar too. Thanks for the inspiration!

Along with speakers( Alnico),Flatwounds are key to the early vintage sound. With rounds, I find myself changing strings more often , - which offsets the price difference. Many pickups besides lipsticks don't have all that much push into clean amps; the vintage output Jazzmaster and Jaguar pickups aren't all that spectacular on their own, which I suspect accounts for the initial lack of popularity of those models .They started wrapping them twice as hot on the bridges on more recent models to accomodate modern expectations. But it just takes patience and experience to learn what that same low vintage signal can become when dealt with properly.( Even with shredders and Metalheads, I question if the pickup is the best place to increase the signal from.) Listening to this, I wondered if Caroline effects had any kind of European reach? Just as Fredric doesn't get much attention in the States, Caroline isn't a mass producer. Both their Parabola Trem and Icarus Boost might be up your alley; the Icarus has a lot of color, bordering on a Drive in its unique qualities. Great gear choices, sounds, and playing as usual.More power to you and the growth of the channel.

They do sound great on the Dano! I love a ton of 50’s Blues, and I could really hear ‘that’ Tone coming from the Flats? Which makes sense, since they were popular strings back then. They sound great with Fuzz and effects! I have never tried them on guitar. I’m allergic to Nickle, so I’d have to find Stainless or Chromes? Many guitar projects to deal with...but I’m definitely going to try it down the line. Thanks for the post!

Thanks for another helpful video! I'm going to look for your video on the black DanElectro tuned to open C. I have an Epi Dot that I have converted to a baritone ... C to C. I learned on that guitar that HB size P90s bring it from mud to glory. It amazed me that super cheap $30 Chinese made HB size P90s sounded so much better in that guitar than SD Antiquities ... that cost a LOT. Anyway ..... I tried 58 44 32 20p 14 11. Too cumbersome for my fingerpicking. So I went to 56 42 30 19p 13 10. The lowest 3 strings I got from stringsandbeyond, and the upper 3 strings I got from Stringjoy. The lower 3 strings are D'Addario flatwounds. I have not tried them yet ... but I think they should be the ideal gauges. At least, for me. Let me know what you think ..

I love flat wound strings now, I went 30years never using anything but 10s but a couple months ago I started getting into clean tone old country jazz stuff and was looking for a more muted tone. I’ve setup my Tele and Strat with 11-50 chromes and now having my LP setup with the same strings, I LOVE the chromes and that thickness increase feels so good when playing lead, no wiggly pitchy leads, very tight!! I have to numb fingers on my left hand because of a surgery and it’s easier to play now. I know where my fingers are supposed to go, just no signal to the brain when they’re there and pressing down but these strings help!

Recently switched to flats on my Strat. Had to really adjust the 12th fret intonation for the wound G and seems everything needed to be slightly higher to get the G set within the radius and not making a sitar sort of sound. Played and adjusted everything for a couple of days and then went and bought a plain G to get things perfected. But, when I played it the last time before I was going to switch it out everything seemed to have settled in and it sounded great so for the time being I've left it on but now realize that for the lowest action and to avoind having to really spend some time adjusting the height and 12th fret intonation to accomodate for the wound G; the plain G is definitely the best answer.

The difference in tension you're feeling on the wound strings isn't due as much to the small increase in overall gauge as it is that the core wire diameter is much larger than what would be used on a round wound string. A lot larger core wire diameter to be accurate. I'm thinking for myself I'll try the flat wound strings on something like a short scale Jaguar. Admittedly, I've been playing for over 45 years now and my finger strength just isn't what it used to be.
