Great! I play classical violin, but I am going to call it the “flick” from now on. So much cooler than “grace note”!! Thanks

I've been playing guitar for about 40 years and decided to learn violin now at 62 years old. Flicks and turns are called hammer ons and pull offs when done on a guitar 🎸

What is a hammer down? I thought it was what you call the flick. Could you please show what exactly a hammer down is and how to do it? Love this channel, thank you for the work you are putting into it.

Excellent. I have always heard the "turn: referred to as a roll love the fact that you refer to Scottish, Irish, Celtic, rather than just one of them as many do. in this type of music these techniques are used by all Celtic musicians

So for flicks and turns, is that kinda like improvising what you think will sound good there? Like it isn’t written into the sheet music right?
@TheTuneProject
@TheTuneProject Жыл бұрын
Occasionally grace notes will be written in, but for the most part we fiddle players improvise when it comes to ornaments, as you said!

Nicely done! Is the flick called a staccato on other instruments? If you touch a key on the Piano like a Hot Iron, it's called a staccato. The flick is a nice way to "spice" up your music! I have heard the term flick used with Guitar and Banjo players also. Does the turn symbol look like the capitol letter "S" laying on it's side? It seems that music stays in memory longer than other things, for some reason. I notice in your titles, you use the double slash "//". This also appears in some hymnals at the end of the song, but I don't know why?

A staccato is different from the flick and is done with the bow instead of the fingers. I'd say the flick is more similar to other types of ornaments (like a grace note or trill). I'm not sure what the notation would be, but most of this type of stuff was passed along aurally, rather than written.
