The Floating Piers by Christo

The Floating Piers by Christo lured tens of thousands to Italy this summer. One of the pilgrims was Tampa-based curator Megan Voeller. Today, we share a very special summer adventure post, including a podcast episode that we recorded with Megan on Skype and her photos of Christo’s brilliant project.
For only sixteen days, the public art installation was open and free to the public. The magnificent floating dock system was three kilometers long, made of 220,000 high-density polyethelene cubes covered in vivid yellow fabric. Christo funded the entire project himself, from the sale of his drawings!
Megan’s experience of The Floating Piers began in late 2015, when she heard the legendary Christo speak about the project during an exhibition of his drawings at the Tampa Museum of Art. Then this summer, Megan flew to Paris for a philosophy seminar. After spending two weeks deep in thought, she hopped on a cheap flight to Milan, rented a smart car, and headed for the mountains in the Lombardi region of Northern Italy. She was en route to the village of Sulzano, at the edge of the phenomenally gorgeous Lake Iseo for her very first in-person experience of Christo’s immersive work.
