Hey man Flood_Dev here, thanks so much for doing a video man. Brought up some good stuff for me to mull over, definitely like your critique and its made me think for sure :) There's a new campaign out now which was a little pet project of mine for a while now telling the story of the flood on the silent cartographer island, not supposed to really be lore wise just telling a small story that the masterchief never saw. Hope you enjoy it

@@LateNightHalo dude the way that you analyse the writing in release, recuperation, and infestation made me think a lot cause I personally believe the food would be apathetic so I'll be making a note of that and changing a few things. In regards to the changing of campaigns I think Revival could be a good name for recuperation but I do like the setting in time line and actions that it takes. I more think of each campaign like separate stories each showing their own themes and places instead of trying to be an overarching storyline. I guess now with the new campaign its no longer a three and mini but a four and mini campaign so it'd be tough to string it all together thematically. However, as I said I do really enjoy your analysis and it has given food for thought and ideas for rewritings :)

mrsubject1 happy to hear it man! Virulence was a thoroughly enjoyable experience! I was surprised at how clever the combat loop turned out to be! There’s a genuine strategy to how you influence the spread and growth of the swarm. Like I said, it played almost like a “first person RTS”

@@LateNightHalo Yeah man I'm so happy that infection was able to be added, really changed the whole dynamic of the experience and i love it. Before it was added it wasn't exactly distinct but now I find myself just playing through levels cause the different approaches you can take to the encounters. The spreading was something was really something i wanted to bring across the growth and spread like how the humans 'seem familiar' when they're first infected in release. Hope you like the new campaign and the new stuff I tried to incorporate into it :D

@@LateNightHalo Ok time to write this out again cause i stupidly delted it thinking I had dual posted. I don't think i mentioned this in the previous comment. The anger on Recuperation wasn't really supposed to come off as anger and was more to do with the masterchief, or how you masterfully analog 'the flesh', evading their grasp and diminishing their horde by a large amount after such ease in consuming all in the same way that staff sgt Mobuto's body was found 'so mangled that even the Flood couldn’t make use of him.' It was more their collective consciousnesses dealing with the evasion and the overwhelming drive to build again rather than any actual hatred towards to covenant forces or even interest into their reason for being at the library just remarking 'they search for the stolen key too'. With all this said i still believe that it definitely could've been put across better to the player through the chapter titles :D

Mechanical instinct IS the main motive, but isn’t the only motivating factor behind why the Flood does what it does. Since a Gravemind’s personality can also be a motive if said Gravemind is a sadist and enjoys infecting new victims.
@ervjeffries-composer39092 жыл бұрын
I was looking for this comment because while that was a really cool metaphor at the end of episode two it completely ignores the fact that the flood, even in its uncoordinated stages, are the remains of primordial beings that have a deep hatred for the Forerunners and un-assimilated life in general, in which case makes it perfectly logical for them to taunt and have disdain towards its enemies: Humans as the inheritors of the mantle, and Covenant as a force standing in the way of its goals. At the end of the day, the flood are a hivemind species driven by primordial hate. If the flood were truly mindless, yes, it would be disappointing, but seeing as they aren't and have clear goals and motivation, the taunts neither add nor take away from the experience for me.

Seriously make a Halo flood horror game where you play as a marine or ODST it could be similar to left 4 dead.
@joshuaneal23165 жыл бұрын
People have been asking for this since the flood introduction in 2001
@Tyler-uc4ye5 жыл бұрын
I honestly do not believe that project would go too well. If you were a Marine or a ODST you would have no chance of survival, and would completely break the fear or immersion of the flood. Remember, this is a parasite that could wipe out an entire Galaxy with a single spore, why couldn't it just kill a single Marine or ODST? Also the flood were never fun to fight against in Halo games. The best reincarnation of them were in Halo 3, and even I found them to be tedious. This is coming from somebody that has been playing all of the Halo games for years on the PC and the Xbox. I still play the Reach insider beta sometimes. Yes you can play the Reach beta on PC still. If you have downloaded a Steam Emulator such as Goldberg Emulator and put the offline.dll inside of it, the game won't have access to the servers, therefore won't lock you out. I am a huge fan of the series. I refuse to play the remastered versions of the games, since I deem them inferior to the original games. I just hope with the rerelease of Halo 2 on PC, they don't force Halo 2: Project Cartographer to shut down. I actually do hope that they take some of the source code for that and put it into H2A, on both console and PC. Halo 2: PC fixed many of the issues that the PC version of the game had, and it's the same version that's on the Xbox One. So not only would we benefit from the net code improvements, better optimization, FOV sliders, high resolution capabilities, and many other things. I hope 343i gives thanks to the community for fixing Halo 2, by contributing to the Halo 2: PC development. Lord knows that we need split screen or at the least co-op. Or the source code would be beautiful as well. Make it the Google Chromium to Chrome. One can be proprietary and "better" while one can be slightly inferior, but make it open source, free for you to distribute, modify, and the former is based off of the latter. Which being you will not get the anniversary graphics in H2:PC. I'm curious on how they will handle it, because Halo 2: Vista is abandon ware. I understand that the game engine for Halo 2 Vista is borderline garbage, but it would be amazing if they at the very least made it on par or better than the original Xbox version.

I'm a modder, and I am modding the CE campaign for you to play as a marine. As a huge fan of the OG Halo, I know what we want. The whole campaign, you take the shoes of a marine, no stronger than another, and in need of your other fellow marines and Chief in this journey...
@Tyler-uc4ye5 жыл бұрын
@@Sissela.Morningstar Oh, how is that project going? I would imagine that it wouldn't be too easy. Would the chief be immortal, or just like a companion in Fallout 4? Or maybe even the Project Lumia companions in SPv3? I also imagine that the worse parts of the game would be a complete bitch to play through. (flood missions.)
@Sissela.Morningstar5 жыл бұрын
@@Tyler-uc4ye Yes it is a challenge. You see, you are just a marine. You fight the Covenant in PoA with other marines as you protect the crewman in their escape before finally going off yourself. Then you land on the ring with Sgt. Johnson, I am sure you remember the section in second level. You hold off until Chief arrives defend with him, and take off with the others in Foehammers pelican as Johnson volunteers to go with Chief. Then you have the operation on the Silent Cartographer. (Before Chief arrives, you know the dead bodies and stuff.) You survive and escape with a Banshee. Then you rejoin the UNSC and take your place in the Assault in the Control room. As you try to push, fail and retreat (second group of marines) you come across Chief and the first group. (Yes I fixed the problem of Johnson being there, removed him and swapped him.) Then Chief leaves to find Keyes after your group and him take over the Control Center. You are assigned to defend it from Covenant and you do that, until Flood suddenly pours out of nowhere and starts slaughtering both sides. (I'm being true to the story of game and the book, even fixing some plot holes while you hava this experience as a forgotten marine.) I wouldn't want to spoil the second half tho. But improvements over the almost perfect masterpiece CE is, the AI upgrades, variety (marines with Covenant guns throw plasmas, or marines hold more then just ARs like snipers or shotguns at the same time. Crewman are actually useful, act like weak snipers with the pistols. You have no HUD, and no shields. One flood spore is death and you are just a human in titanium armor. Shots crumble you and make you stumble, you have non-rechargeable shield system of your metal armor. Only refills when you take a medkit. No crosshair, and so on. Unfortunately because if my lack of first-person coding in CE and its overall difficulty of modding. My mod will be a third-person 'game'. I got inspired of my mod with the original Combat Evolved. The open world, third person, PC one that never came to be. Chief is not immortal, but obviously stronger than you. He literally becomes your only reason of survival many times. I hope I was able to explain.

On the 'the Flood trying to make the covies scared' thing, while basic flood organisms wouldn't really have that sort of goal in mind, the greater intelligence would understand the value of morale, and of course one must remember that the Flood were formed by the Precursors to spite another race, intentionally trying to bring them misery and suffering as vengeance.

Since when were the flood formed with malicious intent? I thought they were a mistake? The only issue I have is in relation to your comments about the character of the flood. The story has a really neat progression from the animal hunger of the initial stages to the labyrinthian malice of the Gravemind and finally back to the dumb animal. The flood are innocent, stupid animals at their weakest, but the Gravemind in Halos 2 and 3 is a very aware creature. It talks about faith in the Arbiter and CORRECTLY guesses at Chief's silent motive when he's trying to rescue Cortana. Its interactions with Chief allude to the deepest part of the Gravemind's character. If Halo's universe draws carefully from Christianity, then the mission title "Infinite Devil Machine" can't be ignored. The Gravemind's creepy hunger and looming dialog mimic Satan's temptations in the form of rhythms and alluring wit, but with the same derisive and accusing dialogue as someone who's trying to shake the heart of their victim. "We exist together now, two corpses in one grave" is clearly meant to hurt the Chief, who knows that he had a hand in burying Cortana. Like the real Satan, the Gravemind's attempts to cause emotional harm are a tactical endeavor to cause rash thinking and clumsy behavior. The wit of the flood is its most potent weapon, and as an allegory among the most important parts of the plot of Halo at large. The Gravemind's influence isn't just as a monster that infects the body, but as an evil that infects the mind of the characters and even the universe itself. The flood WANTS you to think that it's just a dumb animal, because Penitent Tangent can look after a dumb animal.

There're also two ODST firefight maps called Descent (which plays just like Halo CE but has a lot more weapons and stuff and you have just a little less health) and a newer one called Firefight Sector 9 which requires Open Sauce (an extension that tweaks the game engine to allow more modding) but it gives possibly the best immersion of Halo 3 ODST in Halo CE (it even has VISR mode!). The flood also gains intelligence. While I agree on the flood's distaste of Sentinels and how the episodes should be ordered, I heavily disagree that the flood are incapable of thought or emotion without the Gravemind. The flood are still the hate-impassioned war child of the Precursors, and they spread more out of hatred for everything in the universe than just a need for food. The flood, even in the feral stage, have always been conscious and have always had opinions on their enemies. Taunting also isn't far fetched, as it's one of the Gravemind's favourite activities. I would argue that the taunting is not a result of the Gravemind, but rather the Gravemind's tendency to taunt is down to the nature of the flood. They don't necessarily just see targets as flesh, they see them as units of varying physical and emotional value. They flood naturally isolate and target Elites just as you did while playing, because they do communicate, they do make judgements, and they are conscious. Revenge is the basis of how the flood operates, and they very clearly embrace that. The flood's natural drive to feed is only the method in which they exact their revenge. The individual units of the flood also gain information and strategies based on their hosts, meaning that some of the emotional information is also gathered and used. The difference is that the flood still CAN behave autonomously, by not allowing emotions to interfere with performance. They do not necessarily have individual concerns or consciousness, but they do have collective opinions at least, and they can form individual judgements.

The scariest thing about the flood for me when I first played Halo as a kid was the fact that the covenant were so fearful of something that was unknown to you. Seeing them run out of a structure that you have just entered only to see dead covenant everywhere with blue and purple blood covering the floor was nightmare fuel for a curious mind and was the first time I think anyone felt sorry for the covenant. The atmosphere in that level was practically perfect.
@signas5014 жыл бұрын
Something like this was always on my mind when I played through Halo Wars, and I was so dissapointed that in the end, there was only a UNSC campaign. I REALLY enjoyed playing the Covenant in Firefight, and really wished that I could play the other factions like the Rebels. They had their own ranks, buildings and military structure that were all underutilized and underdeveloped.

One idea I think would be a great idea for that second mod is the introduction of carrier forms. What brings out the fear of the flood is your commentary. Really brings out the emotion in the video. The flood in my opinion are very cosmic horror based.

Nara Ousansamaki the flood aren’t cosmic horror. Cosmic horror is lovecraftian. Something impossible to comprehend or understand. The flood are easy to understand. They’re parasites. That’s body horror, not cosmic horror ;P
@IshinoRed5 жыл бұрын
@@LateNightHalo I was thinking more of the Helpless/hopeless side of cosmic horror. (I should have specified that part of it) More on the lines of putting the perspective of the flood being a parasite that could in short insight the feeling with the gravemind/hivemind mentality whilst also not having a motive to why they due what they do. Without the halo rings to subsequently quarantine the flood they in short become a unstoppable force which in turn leads to the hopelessness of never stopping it from spreading farther or at least delaying to process for X ammount of time. Its more of a imaginative aspect of putting something like the flood into different genres of horror to see how they would fit in to the scene. They way you commentated on your video gave me lovecraft vibes and put the emotion on the table the same way H.P does with his works.
@mrsubject15 жыл бұрын
@@LateNightHalo I think the inability to understand is what a lot of cosmic horror comes down to. But in stories like TSOI the deep ones weren't incomprehensible, although their deity was. They were just some aquatic humanoid beings that wanted to breed with humans to eventually fulfill some goal so which is a pretty common subtext especially considering the book was a representation on H.P's fears of immigration. One of my main loves for the flood has to be the eldritch lovecraft influences lol I can't deny that, the thought of sheer insignificance of humans beside them even in their feral stage and how without an entire heavily advanced elder race having to sacrifice themselves to stop them the galaxy would surely have been consumed are what give me those cold lovecraftian elements in the floods overall story and feel. Not to mention the pure eldritch delight of the new gravemind, an incomprehensibly smart pile of rotting fused corpses that in your first meeting ruins your hope of significance in the universe and an entire religion, referring to the lives as 'a doomed existence'. Truly spine shivering :D

I have two theories about why the writing was different in episode 2 - maybe, as the proto-gravemind evolves, the bit of the primordial that is in every gravemind comes into being and makes the proto gravemind/gravemind more sadistic, because we all know what he was like - maybe its captain keye’s hatred of the covenant affecting the proto-gravemind’s manner towards the covenant
@terminuht26275 жыл бұрын
I would like to politely disagree with the statement that the flood shouldn't want to instill fear into it's enemies. Once they have a gravemind, that should be the goal- strategically speaking. Psychological warfare is part of why the flood was so effective against the covenant, they genuinely fear it. Freezing potential prey in fear allows for easier consumption and conversion for the flood to grow even more powerful and more fearsome. Keyes was part of a proto-gravemind, so it makes sense that during your least favorite level that the flood address the living in that manner. At least it makes sense in my mind EDIT: Next time i should finish a video before commenting.

I think your scenario about revenge isnt realistic for the flood for the same reason you told us earlier, that the parasite doesnt have emotions, so why would it feel revenge. It would rather dont mind the setback and keep on going, relentless. Thats what makes it so scary for me. It wont stop, no matter how big the defeats are. It wont stop until the last infection-form has died.
@niftything94305 жыл бұрын
Thorben J. i would think as the flood evolve they gain knowledge and information from hosts making them learn potential for emotion remember the gravemind in i think it was halo 3 had emotion with the slight time they had a proto-gravemind they cohldhave built enough knowledge to know what revenge or feelings/emotions were to a very little extent

I like to think that the flood keeps its victims alive, and feeds on their memories and training. Like how the terminal near Captain Keys' proto-gravemind shows the gravemind speaking to him, trying to coerce him into submission, every combat form experiences this, but from their infection form.

Now THIS is why we all want the ability to mod halo games. Imagine the things that could be done! Imagine what you could do with other halo games if you could mod them? Stuff like this makes me excited for the future of halo. Also, I agree with your thoughts on flood grenades, although since you can't throw a full infection form (or maybe you can) You won't get the full speed infection that you normally get, maybe it is half speed or something. Or maybe that is how you can create carrier forms, kill someone with that "grenade" and they turn into a carrier which needs to be escorted carefully to where it can infect the maximum number of enemies.

I think the truly deep nightmare of The Flood is only apparent when you consider the Gravemind. The skittering, insensate neutrality of the the spore that takes you body pales into insignificance compared to what happens after your flesh is no longer your own. The final, tortured screaming of your mind joins the galactic chorus of writhing agony that is the Gravemind. Your gibbering, demented pain becomes a single note in the grinding laughter that ripples beneath the screams. Your shattered mind drowns within the demented intelligence that composes the opera of carnage. Your every, cherished, memory is bent to the singular purpose of bringing agony to all that you have ever loved.

The creators of this mod know their lore. The "key" is a reference to The Index. The device or "key" require for the activation of the Halo array and its subsequent firing. The "big cheese" here is the proto-gravemind. In the novels, the flood is explored in great detail. They are not mindless space zombies, they are more akin to a collective hive mind consciousness and very, very intelligent.
