This is heartbreaking to see & angering to know that it could've been prevented! I know people in Lakoja, Kogi State (thankfully they didn't lose their home) and they're doing all they can to help their fellow countrymen with very little resources. Sending love, mercy & hope for a better Naija from the U.S.

The water I understand has come from dams in neighbouring Cameroon. The Nigerian government should have built dams and reservoirs but of course lack of vision and incompetence is on everything they do. The next thing that will happen is a flare up in cholera and dysentery so disease, death and more suffering is to come. Be wise who you vote for 2023

nice one BigWill. But I have an issue with everyone blaming the Government. We as citizens need to play our parts by not clogging the drainage system and not erecting buildings in swampy areas without filling the land. Not that this would have prevented this natural disaster but it would have gone a long way to help in some areas. Also when the Government ask people to evacuate they should listen. Government should not have to do everything for people. When times are good, people should save for raining days rather than spraying in parties to show off

The city and state govt are responsible for clearing and maintaining sewers and drainage systems every where in the world. Sewers are not supposed to be open. Also govt should provide designated dumping sites at landfills so trash isnt put by the roadside. If the flood is caused by overflow from a dam which is overseen by the govt...the city or state should evacuate and provide living expenses for displaced citizens This is how it works in modern society everyhwere.

@@originaldelta Yet, there are other areas of the world with open gutters, and people manage to not clog them up by throwing trash in them. But I do agree. The government has to provide garbage bins, and garbage trucks to dump the litter at the landfills. Praying for all the people affected. This is simply devastating.

I have seen the floods over the weeks and its really bad , sad for the people , also i notice there is some weather systems coming from across Africa and into the Atlantic Ocean one after another which gives rise to hurricanes .Im wondering if they are not messing with the weather ,it causes lots of flooding in some Caribbean islands as well which they have never seen in their entire lives before ,

As a Cameroonian, I think this is criminal should Cameroon authorities have released that water without alerting Nigeria as prescribed in their agreement. Nigeria should sue Cameroon like Cameroon did for bakassi because this flood will be too much on Nigeria to handle by themselves.

If Cameroun openned her dam without warning people downriver days before opening up the dam, then they are truly negligent, and the Nigerian government should address the issue with the Cameroun government.

@Joy J. When Cameroon was looking to build a dam in 1979, they approached Nigeria and both countries entered into an agreement that another dam on the Nigerian side (then Gongola State I think) would be constructed, to regulate/protect excesses from the Cameroon side. When Cameroon completed the dam in 1982, Nigeria did nothing and haven’t done ever since. So these floods have been cyclical due to activity from the Cameroonian dam. It’s Nigeria that’s negligent.

@@tmajec Thank you brother for the clarification and frankly education on this problem. It is indeed the Nigerian government who was negligent, and continues to be negligent. Just another way the Nigerian governments, both Federal and State have failed their citizens and seriously harmed them. It's so sad that Nigerian government caused this. And I read this wasn't the first time. It happened before. The country needs a whole lot of changes. Condolences to the peoples who have lost relatives and belongings in this massive flood. RIP to the unfortunate people who lost their lives.

The sins of Yahaya Bello has caught up with Kogi State: Remember before the flood he went and spoke his native language to the villagers and told them that he is ready to stop any other political party from coming to campaign in Kogi by dealing ruthlessly with them, well...he forgot that it is God who is always in control, and not APC!!!

This is very irresponsible of Cameroun. They dammed a river and release waters whenever they please. This is painful to receive. Cameroun should be made to pay for these damages.
