Adds about an hour to the post-anchor routine. So, if anchoring for a weekend or longer I can see value in it. I have never favored the over the side devices for the reasons mentioned (ie chafe). Simpler devices like a bucket with holes and rocks in it work effectively too. The worry in upsizing the 'stopper' is in the intermittent loads it transmits to the pole/halyard or pole lift. This is especially true if the line takes a 90-degree turn out of the mast and adds chafing to the mix. But something like this is almost required for anyone sailing the Pacific (esp Marquesas). Nice short vid.

It only adds an additional 10 minutes for us, and yes! After sailing a good chunk of Southern California and Pacific Mexico on the outside of Baja we can attest to the necessity to assure a good night of sleep haha!

We were sailing in the med on a Dufour and we had side on waves making the boat role a lot at night, I came up with the bucket on the rope idea, tied two buckets to an extended boom. Come the morning my wife said "i now know why this boat is called a dufour - you need to do four buckets." so limited success. On the way home did some solid research and one suggested method I found was rope from stern to anchor rope and then winch the stern rope till the boat faces into the waves. Never tried it but sounds like it might work,

Absolutely agree, it’s definitely an investment but fortunately there are a lot of DIY options as well. In retrospect this is not a product we would have sprung for immediately due to the price point but after using it we both agree it would be worth the investment. It’s a great design, easy to stow and absolutely helps take some motion out of the ocean 😝 if you have any questions feel free to reach out to John, he’s quick to respond and full of knowledge www.FlopStopper.com

The only concern I'd have regarding any flopper stopper is additional wear on one's rig. What do you think about this?
@sailingavocet3 жыл бұрын
These systems have been used by sailors for years, if your rig is that fragile I think there’s bigger concerns! You can also hang over the side and tie off to a deck cleat. John is quick to respond to questions if you want to drop him a line :) www.FlopStopper.com

We did a test with two and currently have two in our possession. Personally it worked better for Avocet with the one off of the spin pole but we have heard other people having success with two deployed off of each side.
Do you have to hop to the shop to stop your flop, or can you do it yourself? *Sorry, couldn't help myself*

Hi Marissa and Chris thanks for the video. I have been thinking about adding flopper stoppers to my equipment list and glad to see your demo. I was under the impression that you needed to use them in pairs to limit roll in both directions. Is it correct that you have found using only one to do the job for you? Thanks, Ben S/V DAWN
@sailingavocet3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ben! We only use the one off our spin pole. You get 3x the efficiency hanging it off a spin pole as it moves the centerline thus reduces the roll. Some people do use two but in our experience one worked best for us. Hope this helps! :)

using 1 unit on one side slows the up-roll, most often enough so that it takes the boat out of the wave cycle so that the hull is moving in opposition to the next wave and "cancels" it. if you have 2, that works great, as the roll is dampened in both directions as you note. however, in some deployments, it works best to hang both (if you have 2) on one side to achieve that "wave cancelling" effect. each flopstopper is good for about 15,000 lbs displacement (when hung off the center cleat), about 2x to 3x that when hung out farther on a pole (lever arm).

They work. A friend gave me one years ago and we use it every anchor or bumpy mooring. Ours is similar but with two blades and stainless. We set it up on the boom (no spin pole aboard). I like the design you have there. Aluminum (lighter) and more blades. Smaller blades will give it a quicker (more effective) action and let it stow smaller.

@sailingavocet3 жыл бұрын
I guess it is quite literally whatever floats your boat, but we have plenty of friends with "modern" hull designs that use flop stoppers as well since they typically have more windage that causes the roll instead of the swell. This is just another handy tool for boaters (sailing and motor) to keep it fun and comfortable.
