I also like how he's still managing to drop in English/British terminology into his lyrics. Spoke of being on the dole (benefits) and said he was a pleb - multiple meanings in Britain from being an ass through to being a derogatory term used by the upper classes toward the lower classes. Once again the double meanings - he's speaking about being an ass who focused on himself regardless of what people think - which some would consider to be the act of a pleb. He's also playing the societal viewpoint of being somebody who was on the dole - ie poor, lower social class - and the link to the historic meaning of pleb being a derogatory term that would have been used in that exact context.

"Power" is one of those gems that always lifts my mood. Thanks so much for this. You always come up with things I hadn't noticed. Two others in a similar vein are his cuts with Eden Nash, "Humble" and "Ocean." Both are complete and utter BANGERS that will live rent free in your head forever. Maybe do them together as they are both 3-minute lyric videos? Anyway, CHEERS!

Yes - if pressed, I would pick Ocean especially because others have tried and failed to identify the musical “sample” that opens and closes the song. Soundhound didn’t recognize it either. Maybe Knox can sleuth his way to an answer where others have failed. Did Ren create the sample out of whole cloth? Inquiring minds need to know!

One fun fact about this video is he filmed it right after he left his record label with to phone cameras. He wanted to throw it back in their faces to show that he didn’t need their permission or support to promote his music and make a video of his own. So this video and song is his first step out into the world as an independent artist.

I like that the video is riding around singing in a car. Reminds me of being a teenager/college student doing the same thing, just cruising around either care-free or working through whatever I was going through. For me art, whatever medium it is, is about the artist showing their soul and gifting the rest of us a ticket on their journey of self-discovery. Being honest is the only way an artist can be great, in my opinion. There's a lot of nice-looking images, or nice-sounding music that isn't true art because the artist isn't revealing anything about themselves to us in any way. That's just me, though. This is why I think AI-generated content isn't art. That's why we like Ren so much. He's real with us, real with himself, and we feel shades of ourselves that resonate to his frequencies.

For anyone interested, the "Council Housed and Violent Flow" line is a play on the British word "Chav," which is a slur for a class of anti-social scumbags who typically wore sports clothing similar to what Ren is wearing in the video. (CHAV may have originally been an acronym for Council Housed and Violent, though that is debatable). I suspect because Ren likes to wear those sorts of clothes and it seems he may have grown up on a council estate, he has probably been (wrongly) called a chav himself at some point.
