Stathis (John Getz) was a stereotype of the soulless, materialistic 80's yuppie, kind of like Burke in Aliens. The movie plays a bit of a trick on the audience, because it's logical to assume he'll turn out to be even worse than Burke. But while he's flawed and often wrong, he turns out to have it where it counts, and becomes the voice of reason as Seth loses all control. Great writing imo

Cronenberg's target is our relationship with our bodies and what happens when our bodies turn on us and we are helpless to do anything about it. This plays out over and over in his films. Memorable, repulsive and tragic, The Fly is a horror masterpiece and you won't forget it.

I watched The Fly probably around 3 decades ago, but when I clicked on this reaction, I wasn't even sure if I had seen it. As soon as it started I recognized that I did see it, but the only things I remembered was that Seth Brundle teleported with the fly & that would cause a problem. I didn't remember anything else of the storyline. I didn't remember to what extent he would transform mentally or physically. I didn't remember any of the gore. I never took any significant amount of mind altering drugs or alcohol in my life to ruin my memory, yet I forgot about this movie & would've never thought of this movie the rest of my life if it wouldn't have coincidentally shown in my YT recommendations. That was via a recent reaction to it.

21:49* another scene was filmed but was cut: Brundle spliced a baboon and cat together to see if he can cure himself with the telepods. It ends in disaster as the monkey cat attacks Brundle, beats it to death with a lead pipe, climbs up the roof, then feels a slight pain in his side, he falls off the roof, and lands on a dumpster where an insect leg tears through his abdomen, bites it off, and throws it away. The scene was so strong audience members threw up in the theater.

'The Fly' from the 50's actually scared me more (even now) because I saw it when I was about 6. This film came out when I was 21 so I was already numb to 70's and 80's horror. The 'help me!' scene in the old film is truly freaky and memorable and anyone who has seen it knows what I'm talking about.

David Cronenberg's reputation is for movies with extreme body horror, and… fair enough. But honestly, if you watch a bunch of his movies (including his later, non-gory stuff), I feel like the _actual_ through-line of his work is a character (not necessarily the protagonist) whose sense of self is being threatened with irrevocable change. The body horror is just Cronenberg's way of visually depicting something that normally only happens inside a person's head.

Not all of Cronenberg movies incorporate the gore element and the nasty body deformations, take for instance Dead Ringers or Crash... what's always in his movies is what you said about the individual threatening and change and the moral implications of it. I don't know if anyone has mentioned that Goldblum and Geena Davis were a real life couple they worked on two other movies together before this and got married soon after the FLY was finished , the marriage didn't last very long tho. stay tuned for more stories and ENJOY THE HALLOWEEN season CHEERS.😁

The Film makers considered a few different epilogues for the movie: one where the kid was born normal, one where it was born with butterfly wings or something like that. In one, she got back together with her ex. They didn't like any of those endings, so they just cut to the credits. As David Cronenberg said, "Once your hero is dead, the story's over"

I don't agree with that saying, I think it depends on the execution. You can have a story where the initial protagonist dies, and the story continues. Also, I don't think Brundle really qualifies as a 'hero' here

Definitely the right call. Not every story needs an epilogue. Sometimes, once the conflict is resolved, it's the end. Period. And if you so desperately need to know what happens after that, you can always use your imagination and come up with your own.

I saw this at a double feature with ALIENS in the village, when I was eleven, with my dad. Was one of the best October afternoons ever. Aliens was like a comedy afterwards. Cronenberg is a legendary Canadian director and definitely check out his other works. Naked Lunch is killer. Eastern Promises and History of Violence are, as was already mentioned, the most accessible of his works. CRASH will mess you up. Definitely a tough one but fkg fascinating. He has a real thing for body horror. Also he cameod in a movie called NIGHTBREED as the villain and was chilling. When the sequel to The Fly came out a few years later, the trailer was more exciting than the film. Had Eric Stoltz and Daphne Zuniga if I recall. Directed by the creature effects genius Chris Walas. I think he shoulda stayed in his Lane and it would’ve been a better film, alas.. I love you guys and am so happy watching these again with you! Thanks for that!

It trips me out seeing people’s reactions when they see the abrupt ending. No build down. Just the credits directly after the climax of the film. A lot of movies in the 80’s ended that way. Either way, this is one the greatest films in the history of cinema. It never gets old. The plot, character development, practical effects and a tragic love story, all molded together perfectly. They don’t make them like this anymore.

Spoiler-free version: the protagonist in the original story falls victim to a similar "point of no return" accident beyond the initial fly transformation as well.

One of the best horror films ever made. To answer your query, Brundle whispers (at the beginning of the film) “Begin teleportation sequence” so that Veronica won’t know what’s going on until after the stocking demonstration. Then, he whispers “Do you love me?” when they’re out on the town and he buys her the necklace, after he teleports himself. Anyway, the film is a potent metaphor for aging and terminal illness. Brundle is reborn in the telepod, goes through puberty (weird hairs, hyper-sex drive, lots of junk food), and begins going insane as his body disintegrates. The gore is all carefully calculated to echo real-world aging and disease (losing hair/nails/teeth, walking with canes, losing control of bodily functions, etc.). The early stages, with Brundle becoming a manic and arrogant jerk, reflects the notion of him (mistakenly) thinking of the teleportation process as being like a drug (another of the film’s metaphors), when in fact the fly DNA is hypercharging him and affecting his body chemistry (sort of like how bipolar disorder works in reality), as well as heightening his primitive impulses for food and sex. The high wears off once he becomes sickly and discovers what has actually happened to him. We see a glimpse of the real Brundle again before his body begins disintegrating, which pushes him over the edge into fear, desperation, and insanity. Brundle’s sarcastic jokes and his supposed pride over what he’s becoming are just the gallows humor and attempts to cope of a man trying not to be overwhelmed by his inevitable loss of humanity. His attempt to merge with Veronica is a last-ditch attempt by a drowning man to add more humanity into the DNA mix…and is also a twisted gesture of his love for her. As Cronenberg has noted, the film is essentially a human drama with the sci-fi elements added in to make it emotionally tolerable for the audience. It’s a movie about the death of Seth Brundle and how he deals with it, mentally, emotionally, physically, and philosophically. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, he develops a terminal illness (or, more to the point, ages), and gets worse and worse until he reaches a point where he is so mentally and physically disabled that he asks his lover for assisted suicide. That’s what the movie is actually about, and why it hits so hard, because we all have to deal with aging and death. Also, Brundle’s desperate search for a cure was established in an infamous scene which was cut out after an audience test screening. It would have foreshadowed the final scene of the movie (and tied up a few loose ends, as well as featuring another stage of the Oscar-winning makeup which did not appear anywhere else in the film), but the audience lost sympathy for him. The metaphor for aging doesnt fully add up, since he goes from canes to help walking, to running around on the ceiling and not needing assistance until death. Otherwise 👍

Cronenberg has specifically said that it’s about aging, and once you go in knowing that, all the pieces start to click into place. Of course, Brundle going from sickly to walking on walls and whatnot is necessary to fulfill the requirements of the sci-fi/horror/monster movie plot, but the overall narrative and emotional thrust of the movie is that he’s deteriorating and going through various mental and emotional gymnastics in order to try and cope with it. After things begin to go south, he’s scared. Then, he tries to study and embrace it by saying that maybe it isn’t a bad thing, celebrating the uniqueness of what he is becoming, naming himself “Brundlefly”, and doing his little “How does Brundlefly eat?” science skit for the camera. Then, out of desperation, he begins working on a dedicated fusion program to water down the fly DNA (which the deleted scene would have introduced), tries to get Veronica to have the baby so that maybe he’ll live on in some form or another, and finally tries to merge with her in an attempt to regain some semblance of humanity. None of this works, because his deterioration and death are inevitable, as it is for all of us. This is all very specifically an exploration of how people try to cope with aging and disease. People will try to hide aging with beauty products, try to incorporate it into their aesthetic view and treat it as not a bad thing, and hope to continue living on through their children. But, in the end, nothing works, and Brundle gets worse and worse until he just wants to die. And then he does, and the movie ends (although several variations of an epilogue sequence were filmed, but deleted). Very depressing, which is why Cronenberg made the most of disguising his themes within the sci-fi/horror framework, because it creates an emotional cushion for the audience to better process the underlying ideas. The script is also peppered with subtle references to aging (“I’m not getting any younger”, “I’m looking forward to a hairy body, it’s one of the compensations of old age”, etc.). Rewatch the movie with this in mind, and the subtleties become clearer and clearer, and the film becomes more than just a very well-crafted monster movie. It’s one of the best and most honest films ever made about how we deal with disease and death, far more honest than the usual Hollywood pap.

I have a bit of my own interpretation of this story. To me, this story is an allegory about illness and the despair of the prospect of dying, and clinging to life by any means necessary. After my wife's death, I understood this story even more in that her body turned against her (cancer) and underwent changes that were life-threatening; changes against which she and the doctors were powerless and from which she ultimately died. She fought until the last breath, but unfortunately that rotten disease was stronger.

I love Sam talking about a Fly head on a human body, because that’s the original 1958 version of this film with Vincent Price ( who was not the Fly). Plus it had one of the most terrifying endings imaginable for that premise ( as in, what does the other side look like).

@@ChurchOfTheHolyMho honestly it's a good flick, it's not the unending horror of this one, it's a product of its era and budget. It's something that would have made a compelling twilight zone episode, a fair bit of camp but...it's a 50s b flick so, that's to be expected. Much of it is lost in just...modern common knowledge, everyone knows the reveal and so the big punch of him with the cloth over his face being removed and seeing what happened to him is lessened. You know the twist already...it's like watching the others or the sixth sense or seven and knowing beforehand what the twist is or watching the Blair witch project outside the hype and atmosphere of this new "viral marketing" no one really knew at the time, you can never really get the effect that the original had, they're still great movies of their genre and style, just like the fly is a great fun 50's b-film and anything with Vincent price kicks ass, but it's hard to get that gut punch when you know the ending beforehand.

If you were familiar with Cronenberg's earlier films, the level of graphic scenes wouldn't be a surprise. Try his movie, Videodrome. I would be very interested in seeing the discussion after that one. Cronenberg made more accessible films later in his career. A History of Violence and Eastern Promises are first rate thrillers. There's a sequel, The Fly II. It could have been called Son of the Fly. John Getz is in it as well. He has a line where he talks about Goldblum's character. "He bugged me". One thing I thought about was that even if it was problematic when transporting organic things, it could have revolutionized shipping. Imagine ordering something from Amazon and it immediately appears in your home telepod. That alone would have changed the world.

I watched that film a day after it opened here in los angeles in a PACKED theater. When his transformations began to happen, we the audience really had to keep it together. The scene with his fingernails, is BURNED into my psyche. In press interviews promoting the film, Gina Davis said her facial reactions when she had to hug a deformed Brundle were real, she was HORRIFIED. David Cronenberg sends this script. And I think, you know, I grew up in Pittsburgh, and my sister and I used to go to the Leona Theatre in Homestead and see a beautiful old theatre, and see many of the first runs of... oh my golly, Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), and great movies. And a lot of Roger Corman movies, and The Sadist (1963), and Iga. And a lot of Vincent Price movies, including, probably The Fly (1958). So when I got this script, I think I had a kind of a thrilling association already with it, and then it's such a wonderful script. David Cronenberg is so smart, an artist, and so individual, and it was wonderful. And what a part, very chewy and delicious. I was kind of very excited right away. We talked about it, and then, there we go. Chris Walas, who won the Oscar for the makeup that he did, designed this thing. And I remember going to his shop, you know, with David Cronenberg early on, and they had... he had drawn out the different stages of my devolution, and we talked about it. Then I started to try on some things, and they photographed them, and, you know, it was a very thoughtful and careful process, a masterful, and artful process. Stephan Dupuis was his cohort, Chris Walas', who got me in, finally, the dentist's chair. It started at 3:00 in the morning, as I remember in Toronto. And they did five hours of makeup on me, to put this stuff on. And during this, I meditated on the part, and I got ready for the day. And, then, you know, technology is what it was, makeup technology, it started to fall apart right away. So the whole rest of the day he's taking it up, and gluing it down again, gluing it down again. At the end of the day, not that I'm complaining, they didn't have a solvent to take it all off, but, you know, it's an hour of rub, rub, rub, rub, rub, rub, rub, rub, rub, rub, your skin is red now. And, you know, all that kind of stuff, but it was fine. They took great care of me. And, of course, doing that project, he and I --- I had an idea. There was an idea about the ending that I had become passionate about. I didn't, when John gets his character to win finally, and for me to become a kind of a - I dunno what I was protecting at that point, but I had a big passionate idea about it. I said, "No, don't let them be together at the end, let them" --- I dunno, something about her being devoted to me, or, I don't know what. We hashed out some kind of collaboration, we had --- I enjoyed it very much, and I think he did, too. As I became The Fly, I don't think I had --- I hadn't really practised, and kind of developed a real concrete idea about how I would behave physically, and this and that. As the story goes, I did find a fly and looked at it. I put it in a plastic bag, and looked at it, and how it was moving around. And, so, I got something from that. I think on the day when I put on the thing, finally, things kind of came, They had to come together, and they did. I remember the first thing we shot is when I am fully flied out. I crashed through that glass brick wall in the medical facility, and, you know, uh, do something like that. You know, I had to come up with it, but we did it. It was just a joy to do. And then his wonderful words, insect politics, and this and that, really, really fun. And the tragedy of it, the romantic tragedy of it, is really delicious to chew on. And, of course, Mel Brooks produced it, Brooksfilms. You know, I loved him. And, then, you know, it was all done, and I went to Times Square, I think, for the opening. And, boy, it was a ruckus, 'cause nobody knows how it's gonna play or anything. It was a,... I stood in the back, and it was a real ruckus crowd that seemed to enjoy it that night, it was thrilling. And in the decades to come, it gets enjoyed, and people come up to me and say one thing or another, and I'm thrilled that I did it. It was a high point creatively, and career-wise, too. - Jeff Goldblum (from Independence Day (1996), Jurassic Park (1993), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), The World According to Jeff Goldblum (2019 - present day)), who played Seth Brundle in The Fly (1986).

When I think of "body horror" I think if this movie. Probably my 1st introduction to it. Disturbing, gross and also devastatingly sad. The sequel is more of the same themes. But this movie, whether you love it or hate it, you will not forget it. Wonderful acting, amazing special effects, depressingly sad story. One of the few remakes that surpasses the original.

Remove the sci-fi spin, and this movie is a love story about a couple dealing with a terminal illness. David Cronenberg (the director) always said that a good sci-fi/horror story needs to be good enough to stand on its own without the fantastical elements. "The Fly" succeeds in that effort without a doubt. It's just difficult to see past all the glorpy sticky stuff 😁

There is also a cut scene where he tested combining two creatures into one with the 2nd Baboon and a cat that was wildly bizarre. It was cut because Brundle beat the Baboon/Cat to death and made him look too evil too soon in the film. That scene also showed a 3rd atrophied insect limb push out of his side and Brundle rip it off his side.

I first saw this in 1987 when I could rent it on video (I was 17 back then). For me this is Jeff Goldblum's best film. His acting is on point going from a meek, quiet genius, to an out of control mad scientist, to someone dealing with a disease (as he begins to transform) and finally becoming a literal monster--- And yet I can still feel and incredible amount of empathy for him at the end. And I believe this was due to Jeff Goldblum being just so charismatic when he was "normal." Seth Brundle is a tragic character in the classic sense- and his final death scene can still bring a tear to my eye to this day. Also due to being able to feel every ounce of Veronica's pain having to mercy kill him. Geena Davis' performance was fantastic. Poor Seth. All he wanted to do was create a new form of transportation because he suffered from motion sickness. There is a deleted alternate ending in which Veronica is clearly pregnant and has a dream about giving birth. Her normal looking baby sprouts butterfly wings and "flies away." The last shot is her asleep with a smile on her face so we get the impression she has made the decision to go through with the birth. So the "flying baby" effects which were practical and not CGI, looked absolutely terrible (like a toy baby doll with wings) and it was the right decision to leave it out.

What I love most about this movie I looked up to Jeff Goldman cause he reminds me a lot of my dad. And his performance in this movie was so classic his character was definitely something I was inspired and sympathized for Seth Brendle was just a man who wanted to create the biggest change in the world and I want to believe his work would have been a success he'd be remembered for generations better than he is now. Seth fought so hard to try and fight the changes happening to him even when the insect instincts in him took over but when his humanity came back on he begged Veronica to end his suffering which I cried over knowing there was no way out and I wish he could have found a cure Seth will forever have my fandom and sympathy Great respect to Jef Goldman and Gina Davis for their great performance in this tragic scifi movie!

There's nothing more I can say that hasn't already been said about this masterpiece, but what I love about early Cronenberg (that you can also see throughout his filmography) is his expert use of editing when showcasing an initial shot of realistically gruesome violence, followed by a reaction shot, followed by yet another, extended shot of the aftermath of the violence.

I'd urge you to see Cronenberg's DEAD RINGERS, a film nowhere near as gruesome as THE FLY -- not even close! -- but one with a career-defining performance by Jeremy Irons, the always-welcome Genevieve Bujold (as icing on the cake), and a haunting story about two people who are one person (or so they want to believe). I'd call it Cronenberg's best film, and one of the best of its decade.

Cronenberg is a brilliant filmmaker. Suggestion: Watch “Existenz”. While not a horror film, this film continues the theme of body horror. Also, I HIGHLY recommend, “A History of Violence”. A non-horror yet disturbing film.with one of my favorite actors, Viggo Mortensen.

Stathis was an anti-hero, by way of being a jerk initially, but still having a moral compass and doing the right thing in the end. Seth was an anti-villain, and boy-howdy, a tragic one at that; A good man and a genius who makes a mistake which leads to his slow downfall and losing his humanity.

There is a sequel directed by Chris Walas, who did the creature effects for the fly itself here. If you want to know what happens after this one, it's pretty good too. David Cronenberg, who directed this movie, played the doctor during the abortion in the dream sequence. He is, pound for pound, one of the greatest horror directors the medium has ever produced. VIDEODROME, THE DEAD ZONE, SHIVERS, RABID, THE BROOD, SCANNERS, CRASH--a hell of a lot of REALLY good horror movies, all of which are strongly recommended (but few of which are for the faint of heart).

As far as John Getz's character is concerned, my take is, just because someone's an A-hole, doesn't mean they're a bad person. He still loved his ex, and was jealous, which explains his motivation in the movie.

Cronenberg did a great job setting up the characters at the beginning of the fly and that set up paid off at the end. Stathis was introduced as this guy who was still in love with Veronica at the start and his love for her lead him to becoming the hero in the climax. Seth was introduced as this ambitious scientist whose ambition and obsession with his invention lead him to his demise and Veronica was introduced as an independent, emotionally strong woman who became very supportive of her doomed lover and being the one who had to kill the monster at the end, great characters and great movie!

@@jermainehaslam5634 Stathis was neither in love nor the hero. Both would have required him to contact the cops, or anybody, after BrundleFly took Ronnie. He didn't, meaning he was either going to be the "hero" or leave her to her fate, ie. selfish.

@@michaelccozens Nah, Stathis was in love with Veronica and you could tell he genuinely felt bad for Veronica when she told him she was pregnant with Seth's baby. That's one of the things that's great about the fly, none of the characters are perfect Seth was a likeable character but he was insecure and he became corrupted by the fly genes in his body and Veronica should of been more clear with Seth about her relationship with Stathis and Stathis was just suffering emotionally from Veronica leaving him!
