@gemmaraine Some people have theorized that line about him being an insect who dreamt he was a man as literal, like the fly gained sentience and was able to experience life as a human after the first teleportation, 'cause like Seth said, he's not truly Seth Brundle, but more a spliced offspring. But also, before he met Ronnie, Seth didn't live like normal humans; never went out, never dated, never had fun. His work was his life, and it was only after his teleportation with the fly that he actually started to live. I don't quite agree with that, and see it more like you said, how his more insect instincts are taking over, but it's an interesting thought.

At the time the movie was shot, Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum were married. This is why their scenes of a relationship were so good. As an aside, I was invited to be part of a test audience for this film. We were shown a pre-release cut of the film and given big multipage questionnaires to give our reactions and opinions. David Cronenberg was there to observe the overall audience reaction. Thus I got to see the movie months before it was released in it's final form.

Basically The Fly and The Thing are the two best remakes ever, both by incredible directors. Just FYI, Cronenberg's son Brandon is now a director, his third film comes out this year and if the first two are anything to go by, it should be very interesting. If you want to see David Cronenberg's acting range (and directing without being the director), maybe take a look at "Nightbreed".
@SlytheyTove Жыл бұрын
Funny thing about Nightbreed for me: Fantastic movie, both the theatrical and the Directors cut, but weirdly enough, I felt the theatrical version had the better ending tbh. Yeah, the directors cut offers more story, characterization, depth in the overall story and feels richer because of that, but the ending of it was just... meh. Whereas the ending of the theatrical release felt rushed and chaotic, but at the same time, iconic, and made you want more soooo bad! It's a Conundrum for me: One has more substance to satiate the pallet, but the other leaves a more lasting impression, and makes you want seconds. Idk, Have you seen both versions? Does anyone else feel similar?

Even as a kid first watching this (on classic HBO no less) and not yet fully understanding the adult interactions, it still always struck me how the fly creature's design was made to look grotesque yet somehow sad at the same time. Your face during the final scene says it all. You can't help but feel sorry for everyone in the final moments. Yes, even Stanis to some degree. This is a remake that truly understood and delved fully into the classic movie monster depiction; terrifying but tragic. As always, so awesome to watch along with you. Also, your feeling like the headphones were sticking to you at the end there was great. That is exactly the effect that David Cronenberg's ideas and visuals tend to have on people. This movie has a lot to offer. A passionate romance, sci-fi, body horror, heartbreak, drama, it's all done so perfectly. I've been watching this one since I was like 10, and over thirty years later, I still find myself touched by it. Something that really gets me now is the feeling of inevitability brought on by disease and how dehumanizing and isolating that experience is. At the time it was made, it was an allegory for AIDS, but for me, given personal experiences would be cancer. Seeing someone you love, getting that diagnosis, going through those changes until you have to just watch them dissappear, is life changing. Perhaps we all see something different based, on ourselves, but that is what art is all about. Concerning this video, really appreciate the reaction, and response to all of it. The "Help me!" Scene is a call back to the original The Fly film. That iconic scene when they're looking for The Fly with the head of a man, and they find it trapped in a spider's web, screaming "HELP ME! HELP ME!" It's easy to miss, but that line is at the very end of the Cronenberg trailer. Nile Rogers even wrote a song called Help Me which is playing in the club during the arm wrestling scene. When you think about it, this story is really just a bit of a lame love triangle, where one of the three contracts a terminal illness, but with the added Sci-Fi and Horror elements and Practical FX, it easily stands out as one of the single greatest Horror stories ever told, and is easily one of the greatest Horror movies we will ever see 🥩🪰

Also, I think it's one of the most plausible science fiction / horror movies. Apart from the ceiling walk scene (which is a little bit unrealistic) everything else could probably happen like this if the DNA of a human and fly would be spliced together. The transformation would manifest itself first, where new cells are formed. So it would start where a wound heals and on the skin. Also the move begins, the story happens and then it ends, no fluff. I really loved it when I first saw it, mostly for the body horror - in fact, it was the first time I realised I was into a particular director. I’d seen Cronenberg’s Videodrome not long before, and after seeing this I was like “Ok, this guy’s my kind of weird!” But I went off gore as I got older, and that was really all I remembered about The Fly, so it sort of dropped off my radar and I haven’t watched it in years. But watching your reaction gave me a completely new appreciation of it - the horror only works because the movie does such a great job of establishing Brundle and Veronica’s characters, and especially their relationship. The real horror is in how the teleportation brings out the worst parts of his personality, and how that ruins what they could have had. To be fair, what happened to him physically probably ruined a few things too! Brundlefly is definitely NOT cute

Hi there, Angel Groves! To answer your question at the 45:38 mark (and the unasked question right before then), I saw the original version of The Fly on television back in the 1970s, and it was creepy as Hell to a child in the single-digit ages. It didn't "traumatize" me, like "The Omega Man" did, but I was only 6 when I saw that one. Side note: If you haven't seen The Omega Man, I recommend seeing it before "I Am Legend" (assuming you haven't seen that one yet, either). In fact, you COULD do an "I Am Legend Book to Movie Adaption Marathon" if you want to do something interesting that no one else has done. It's been adapted to the Big Screen 3 times: "The Last Man On Earth" (starring horror legend Vincent Price), "The Omega Man" (starring Charleton Heston), and "I Am Legend" (starring Will Smith). Getting back to my original point of this reply... I did see this version of The Fly in theaters. I was 19 years old at the time it came out. I also saw the sequel to this (The Fly II) in theaters when it was released. Have a wonderful day!

This might also have my favorite score by Howard Shore; I love his music for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but his scores to this film and Silence of the Lambs are probably my two favorites of his. The combination of the gradual physical transformation with Seth’s changes in personality really make you feel like you’re stuck in a nightmare that keeps getting worse and worse, which works perfectly with that gut punch of an ending, which I believe is perfect (they filmed a few additional scenes that were supposed to take place after the ending scene, and they ultimately decided that the abrupt and tragic ending they went with was the better choice). Also, the tragedy and the transformation in the film are meant to be an allegory for AIDS, which was heavily on the rise at the time.

This movie is so interesting from a character stand point. The nice guy turns into a monster and the stalker ex saves the day. You don't see that too often. Not only plays with expectations, but it adds to the tragedy. A Jeff Goldblum movie that no one has ever heard of is 'Vibes'. It's a little silly, but fun.

Hi Boo, hi Angel! Another great reaction from you guys. I've always been a fan of monster movies since I was a kid and actually enjoy the Universal Pictures classics from the '30s and '40s like "Dracula", "Frankenstein", etc. Back in those days special effects weren't as awesome so those movies often relied on great storytelling, unlike later movies that relied on shock and gore. For me this remake had a lot going for it and surpasses the original. Although it could not exist without the original which deserves respect for coming up with the story in the first place. I don't expect you to react to it but maybe on your own time the original is worth seeing, if for no other reason than to appreciate David Cronenberg's take on the story. It's less disgusting but in it's own way pretty trippy. Thanks SO much for letting me hang with you guys - let's do it again some time?

Hey, David! Aw. Thank you SO much! I'm so happy you enjoyed it! I'll tell Boo too. :) I really need to check out those 30s and 40s movies liked Dracula and Frankestein, etc., that you mentioned. I've been meaning to! Also, yes I do want to see the original of this one as well, at some point. Like you said, if only to be able to appreciate Cronenberg's take on it even more. He is incredible! Yes, we sahll do it again soon! See you for the next one, David!

I saw this at the movies w/ my dad when I was 10. I remember the women in the audience in particular groaning and saying Ewww!, etc. That was funny in its own right because the gross out factor in this was so over the top that you had the sense you were being trolled even before trolling existed. PS Davis n Goldbloom were married at or near that time. They were also in a comedy called Transylvania 6-5000 in 1985. Earliest Goldbloom flick I’ve seen was Invasion Of The Body Snatchers in 1978. Various reaction chans have been doing that one recently. He was in Silverado in 85, too. Saw that when it came out, good cast.

The original film is also a fun watch. The result of the teleportation is more straightforward and not graphic at all. It might elicit a laugh by today's audience. It was spoofed on a Simpsons' Halloween episode. That being said, the story is affecting as well as it's ending.

David Cronenberg was very much into body horror. And this movie is absolutely no exception.

The original 1958 "Fly" was definitely orders of magnitude tamer than this one. It was a typical sci-fi B-movie with a low budget. Yet it still had its own iconic scenes that are memorable, particularly the ending. Legendary horror B-movie actor Vincent Price was part of the cast.

When I was a child I always felt a bit squeamish during the really gross stuff. However, in 1982, when I watched The Thing this kid simply could not take his eyes off the screen. I was utterly engrossed and wondered just how they pulled this stuff off. Decades later I wrote about it in "My Favorite Horror Movie." Cronenberg's "The Fly" won an Oscar for Best Makeup Effects. Now that you've seen The Thing and The Fly you must see The Blob. The three films are considered by many to be the Holy Trinity of '80s horror remakes.

Great reaction! The Fly is really good and I agree the acting and chemistry between Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum really makes the movie (combined with the special effects). Favorite Jeff Goldblum movie is Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) which is also a remake of an older original from the 50s (1956) also starring Donald Sutherland, Veronica Cartwright and Leonard Nimoy. If you haven't seen it, it would make excellent material for a reaction on your channel. Just saying :)

I love all 4 of the 80s remakes of classic 50s films. I hope you watch the next two, The Blob and Invasion of the Bodysnatchers from 76 (I think) which also co stars an even younger Jeff Goldblum as well as Donald Sutherland. Also, I too can't go long without referencing Dr. Who, though I'm a classic series guy. I think The Fly 2 was a flop, but I quite like it as it does continue from this film, featuring bearded hand/foot guy.

(Thanks for liking my first comment!) This lady has me anticipating her next show before I have even seen this one! (The Fly 1957 is my favorite horror movie after 1982's The Thing.*) I really think this movie succeeded in making the fly thing look real where the first movie failed miserably. I saw it in the theatre, and I could see where 80s horror was going after that. It's a landmark in special effects wizardry. The whole damn movie is chilling, no matter which version you see first. On that note, wait. Think about it. WAY more chilling than Freddy or Jason or Michael. It was an altruistic pursuit of science tragically arrested not through arrogance like Dr. Morbius, or hubris, like Dr. Frankenstein, but simply because some idiot making teleportation doo-dads left a window open when he was cleaning up the horrible messes he made when he hadn't quite perfected it yet, and now that it's perfect, say let's be the guy alone in the lab who just says, what the hell, let's give myself a little go and see what it's like... Creepier than Metamorphosis. This one flies. The protagonist is a tragic hero who has to endure a fate worse than death to be sure. In reality, I think the original had a much more compelling story, the hope of finding the other fly with the white head was what kept me encapsulated within the story's suspense. I LOVE both movies though, and I'm glad I've subscribed so I get to enjoy watching this as soon as the show was uploaded! ♥︎ This movie rocks! Best to you all! (* I don't consider RHPS to truly be in the horror genre, nor science fiction. I simply consider RHPS to be the greatest movie musical ever made.)

Your comment is so awesome. Thank you!!! I'll be watching the original The Fly at some point as well, for comparison. That's cool that's your favorite movie...and followed by The Thing. NICE! I appreciate it and really do apprecaite your comments! :) Also, omg YES. RHPS is....PERFECT.

The 57 Fly is a very different experience, also quite shocking for its time - and that ending! - there's something about the simplicity of such a straight B movie, esp a strong one like that, that can yield unexpected gifts - whereas Cronenberg is doing something very different w this premise, much more complex and personal - I heard Cronenberg tell a funny story about his relationship w the original film - as I recall, he said when he was a kid the cinema had a contest where they promised some reward if you could prove the movie's premise was impossible - so little Cronenberg went up to the usher and said "so how come the guy's head shrinks and the fly's head gets big?" And the usher told him to scram - and he said he was furious at the time, so his film here is like his revenge lol

As others say, not anywhere near as much a horror film as it is a nightmarishly beautiful tragedy. Possibly my favorite film tragedy. The weight of the score also does so much to convey that sense of having to come to terms with knowing there'll be no happy ending. Awful, heart-wrenching, bleak, and yet beautiful.
