Flyfishing has such a HUGE learning curve, getting a tight line on no matter what fish is such a thrill. You talked about steelhead and salmon and nobody feels guilty about using attractors for them, also nobody gives anyone grief for a foul hooked fish which occasionally happens when using a tandem rig when trout fishing but not a peep when it happens often for steelhead and salmon. We all have our preferences as long as they don’t turn into prejudices. For me , the Globug is mostly a staple on my tandem rig, but usually a realistic nymph is on the rig also, which many a times, outfishes the Globug. I love all my flies in all my boxes, but the one I love the most is the one that’s in the fishes mouth at the end of my line. Have fun and enjoy this great sport.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, and the learning curve is no joke! Over thirty years in and I'm still learning, which is one of my favorite parts of the game. Trust me, there is talk about the use of indicators for any species, though I feel that we've been moving away from those discussions over the past few years. The beauty of fly fishing and tying is that there are MANY lanes to choose from and each fisher is free from others' thoughts and opinions when doing so. More importantly, you mentioned some effective flies, but has there been one that killed fly fishing for you, no matter how short of period of time? Happy holidays! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

@@TimCammisa I’m not a big fan of squirmy wormys and the mopfly, although I’ll occasionally use them when all else fails and I really don’t catch many fish on them, but I see other guys do. It’s Hard feeling that tug between traditional flyfishing and keeping up with the changes. Really, I don’t think any fly would KILL flyfishing for me, flyfishing gives us diehards life, if I ever felt that way about a fly, that fly wouldn’t be in my box, that I can assure you.

@@pawoodsnwater7551 Ha ha, I think you may have misinterpreted "kill fly fishing" with the video! By it, I mean has there been a fly that worked so well, even for a day, you nearly felt guilty? For example, I had one afternoon with a Black Ghost streamer that I will ALWAYS remember. Nearly every cast for 30 minutes produced a rainbow trout, and when I made three casts without a fish, I thought something was wrong! The next cast got me back into a fish and that continued until I realized that I was nearly an hour late to pickup my sister. I so desperately wanted to share my. experience with others (this was WAY before the time of social media!), but didn't know how I could do so without disclosing the "killer' fly...that Black Ghost. Times have changed, as I shared that pattern on KZbin years later: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppi4n4N6a6-geLs Even if not feeling guilt, I was hoping this video would encourage others to share some of the memorable experiences that help to define the sport for each of us. @@TimCammisa honestly, the flys I normally tie are made from chicken feathers that you get from regular farm chickens. Some of my summer favorites are over sized nymphs tied on a streamer hook with a bead head. I used overly large hackle for a streamer effect that is similar to a skirted jig. The morrish hopper is a top water favorite of mine. Winter I like to tie nymphs on a size 10 nymph hook with a black body and silver ribbing. This pattern is great for any kind of pan fish, even crappie will eat it.

Long term sub here. About 8 years ago I retired to a remote lake filled area here in B.C. I fished my whole life but was saving learning to tie till then. Your videos greatly aided this process. I agree with the purists and the most casual of fly users. The tug is the drug after all. This year I developed a micro leech that out fished every fly in my boxes. Decades ago, I was stationed at NAS Whidbey Is. Washington. About half an hour from base was a fly fishing only lake, Pass Lake, in Deception Pass State Park. The premier fly for the lake was a leech pattern. It was trolled behind whatever rowed small water craft one used, on full sinking fly line. I caught and released numerous trout using that fly. At the time, I was a novice fly tyer. I tied numerous patterns of varying couldn't by a hit! I had to take a break!! So, I switched to searun cuts on different wet flies. But...when I needed a fix. I always returned to Pass Lake.

It's like throwing a single egg presentation, as opposed to a cluster. Slide a bead on a scud hook. Build a thread damn in the mid shank, and set the bead on it. Use a glue gun to add a ball of glue around it in white, orange, or pink. Can be translucent or solid color. Keep it rotating as it cools, and when it stops sliding everywhere, drop it into a cup of cold water. So there is tying involved at the second step, and you are still managing the material buildup. It's like throwing a single egg pattern instead of a cluster of eggs. Can see where he is coming from. But I also know I can turn out five to eight clown eggs with eggstacy materials in the time getting one to two glue eggs if actually bothering to add weight to the pattern.

This happened some years ago when smoking cigarettes was very common and I was still a young kid. I was fishing for a few hours and didn't catch anything and I was standing on a bridge over the stream. I noticed a filter cigarette butt on the ground. I picked it up and sort of tore the filter apart with all the fibers fluffing out. I threw it in the stream and it floated for about 2 sec and WHAM.

Thanks for sharing, Paul, and I bet most have a story like this. In reality, we're attempting to catch a fish with a brain the size of a pea. When they're hungry and in the mood to eat, they'll eat. It's up to each of us to decide what our preferred method is, with an exception being regulated sections that are designated "fly fishing only" or otherwise. Pom Pom ball egg fly. Saw some in a craft store that was fairly small so I bought some. The tying is sticking them through the center and over a drop of super glue. A 6 mm pink one got me into the biggest brown trout I have ever caught to date on a fly rod. I felt like I cheated for some time. But I got over it. I have been fly fishing since I picked up a rod in 1963! A lot of things have changed in the sport since then. It was voodoo when I started, now the flow of information and instruction is widespread and accessible. Nobody spends the first 10 years working it out in a hit and miss fashion. It's winter, it's cold and it's also what I like to call junk fly season. Till it warms up again and the Early Black Stone flies start showing up in the late Feb.

@@TimCammisa Split shot and a strike indicator ( bobber). I don't do a whole lot with beads. I find it easier to just adjust the amount of weight with split shot. Casting has to be a more open loop. My rods are not as stiff as the current models. To stiff in my opinion. I suppose you could put a bead on a hook and then stick a pom pom ball behind it. I don't have a fly that killed fly fishing for me but I was thinking about the mop fly a few months ago and I believe it was your comment about it not matching anything in particular. I disagree. It matches pretty closely a grub you dig up in your lawn. I'm sure these get washed into the river, especially after a hard rain and I'm betting fish look at them as a very tasty snack. They're certainly bigger than a lot of aquatic insects. Probably just me thinking too much. Keep the good stuff coming.

Hi Johnny, and feel free to disagree! When fishing that fly (and others) in those natural and subtle colors, I fully believe that reasoning; what about when fishing it in bright pink, chartreuse, and hot orange? ;-) To be honest, I am pretty sure all of us addicted to tying and fly fishing overthink EVERYTHING, but that's what makes this fun. Part of my belief with that pattern is that it has a soft consistency, giving it the feel of something edible as fish are munching away. They hold onto it a tad longer than other flies, therein lies part of its effectiveness. The other piece we forget is that trout are constantly trying items all day long; their survival depends on it. The Mop drifts with an erratic action, giving it yet another reason for the fish to try. No matter what they take it (and many other patterns) for, I will continue to use it...and not feel overly guilty! Have a great holiday season. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

At Boiling Springs in Pennsylvania, a bridge crosses the stream. And from this bridge, people would throw pieces of bread on the water. And the normally fussy trout living under the bridge would smash the bread. Before I went back, I took a popper hook, loaded it up with deer hair, trimmed it to a white cube. Thus, the bread fly was born. When kids on the bridge threw bread, I tied on a bread fly and it absolutely slayed trout. And since the hook was so big I had to use heavier tippet. I landed every single fish.

@@TimCammisa I fished the ultimate chalk stream, the Test River in the UK. Only dry patterns allowed. I caught a beautiful brownie on the Royal Coachman Dry, and I had another one on the Stonefly Dry pattern. You have to stop fishing after you catch "a brace" -- their term for two fish. The waterway is divided into stretches, and they have gillies who are the waterkeepers for each section. The gillie has a small cottage on the river where he makes tea for you. It was wonderful to flyfish on the river where flyfishing was invented. Fishing trip of a lifetime.

On my first fishing trip to a famous Colorado river I studied the regs before my trip as I always do. I knew this was an artificial only stretch of river. I was fishing a double nymph - a tiny size 20 nymph dropped off a slightly larger bead head nymph. It was spring, there was young foliage on the trees. On one back cast I barely hooked into the leaves of a small tree. I managed to carefully remove my gear from the leaves with gentle tugging and considered just making another cast but something told me to check the rig for damage. To my great surprise I found that the tiny nymph had hooked an equally tiny caterpillar with a degree of precision I could not possibly have achieved. It was perfectly set up for fishing. I quickly removed the worm before becoming a bait fisher. I found myself trying to imagine how I would explain the worm had a game warden popped up at that moment to inspect my lure.😁 Now, I’m not against bait fishing, but there is a time and place for everything! As if that alone was not funny enough, a story by John Gierach came to mind in which he and (as I recall) Rancid Crabtree had taken a fly fishing purist “sport” on a guided trip. At one point, having caught nothing, the sport complained. Mr. Crabtree responded that he felt certain that the gentleman’s Royal Coachman would benefit substantially from the addition of a red wiggler. 🤣🤣😋

OMG dude. when i was a kid my dad would take us to the cold spring harbor fish hatchery where trout were hatched and grown for stocking.... i learned early that if a trout was hungry it would hit a pebble when tossed in.. it would hit it the first time for sure, maybe the second time to be sure it was a stone and not the third time at all.. so once i started tying i started to under stand the match the hatch thing . It too me years and years to over come the idea that flyfishing was for an elite group of guys in tweed jackets and nickers looking like English gentlemen.. once i started tying which i did before i started with a fly rod, to understand that farmers were tying flys with the feathers from the barn yard and their wives sowing basket. My perspective shifted... This fly you speak of is a BEAUTY.. it is tied very nicely.. The idea of not using a particular type of fly is just DAFT to me . i suppose the same thing was said for czech nymphs too.. Granted not many of us are going to tie like the old timers at hardy that tied the most beautiful and intricate salmon flies with out a vise. Not many of us are going to tie with and with out a vise like Lee Wulff .. waht is is it that Gary Lafonaine said the uglier the file is the better it fishes???? time to bring those guys who wont be caught dead with one of those in there boxes down a few knotche ... Thanks for the comments and thoughts, Jeff, and II was just thinking about Lee Wulff tying those TINY Royal Wulff dry flies...in hand! Funny you should mention that. Back on point, I'm glad to know that you overcame the idea of fly fishing being reserved for an elitist group, as you can undoubtedly guess my opinion of that. With that said, I do disagree, as if someone wants to fish nothing but Catskill-style dry flies during a hatch, good for him or her. I've mentioned this in a few of these comments, which therein lies the beauty of this sport: We're free to choose our own path. If someone doesn't want to have certain types of flies in their box, that's fine...they can send them my way! ;-) Thanks again for the insightful thoughts, and I hope you have a great holiday season. For me it was the Y2K. I have no idea what trout see in this pattern. Just a blob of two colors that represents nothing living. But out of desperation to turn a dead fishing trip, it worked up fish into a frenzy. It worked so well I used two at the same time. It don’t work all the time, but on occasion when fish don’t take anything else it worked. Go figure..

The FeatherCraft CrackleBack is the fly I rely on to catch trout in trying times. It’s worked like a champ for me from the western United States all the way to Argentina. A great chat in there Tim. Me, I just don’t understand the guys that deny any given pattern as legit. As far as I’m concerned, if you put it on a hook and catch a fish it works. End of discussion. How can these people go on about a certain pattern when, in long gone days of yore, bait to catch a fish using a hook bore no resemblance to anything we use nowadays. I was fishing in light snow flurry with nothing to show for it, but noticed brook trout rising to snow flakes, ended up with a skunk that day after switching over a dozen flies. I went home and tied up some all white hackle flies, returned to the spot during the next snow and put a hurting on them. I felt so much like a cheater afterwards I never tied the fly on again despite seeing fish continue to rise to the flakes on more than several occasions.... although to this day 1 of those flies is still in my box

We stayed in contact with Frank and he sent us lots of his tools for tying classes. I still have a lot of them! He had just came out with his famous wip finisher! He gave us two on the river were we were tying at a picnic table. He was a really nice man.. My dad started in 1932 age 7 he watched a man access the street from his home and the man asked if he wanted to learn! Had lots of good fun! All them years boy do I miss them all!!! Am I missing something? How would an effective fly ruin your day by actually catching a fish? I fished a BWO for an entire morning and caught trout after trout on a 1/2 mile section of my favorite river. My buddy, however, threw his entire arsenal and never hooked the first fish. He was a little sour, but I can honestly say I was very excited. There’s an air of sophistication often associated with fly fishing. I guess fishing the latest trend might be considered untoward.

@@TimCammisa from an outsider looking in I think it is a good thing to be honest. Fly fishing has a reputation of being slightly pretentious. If this reputation is earned, or false is based on personal experience. (Not here to get on my soap box.) I found and mocked the soft plastic worm fly (cant remember the name if it) because it is pretty much the same as what I use when I drift fish. Then I started looking around and bought some nymphs to try. They work very well on a light centerpin set up. Started looking some more. I then got recommended videos from niklaus bauer, and gunnar brammer. The first video I seen from gunnar brammer had a death metal intro. It was fantastic finally a video without acoustic folk music. I found out not all of fly fishing has to be modeled off of "A River Runs Though It." I now have a cheap 9wt, and am starting to tie up streamers. I am doing decent with hooks, tubes for me seem to be a bit of a learning curve. The circumference of the predator tubes throw me off a bit. I think the non traditional flies, and more importantly non traditional personalities are important to have. They may upset folks, but it brings in people as well. It was amazing how many people were salty about metal being on a fly video. Lol

@Masterpiece Tools so what are you arguing here? "Real fly fishing" is the only way to not over harvest, or catch and release is? Even if you use nothing but dry flies with completely natural materials what is your tippet made of? Every time you lose a fly you lose some line right? Every time you change flies do you clip the tag end of the knot and put it in your pocket? Perhaps the best thing for the environment is to just all switch to bait. That way we don't have all the farms and processing facilities for making the tanned products used in all natural flies either. Much smaller foot print to grow worms and crickets.

Fly fishing can get “snobby” I could care less what other people think about the gear I use. I used to live in The Dalles Oregon and fished the Deschutes River tied my own flies and made a “fly” that was a heavy steelhead hook, barbless, it has a tuff of pink and white yarn and a spun “necklace string” I made of hobby shop fish egg sized and colored Pom poms. Whip tied it and put a drop of salmon egg scent on. It will slam fish, they loved it. Some snobby fly fishers seeing me skunk everyone came to ask what I was using and upon showing them scoffed:”that’s not a fly! That’s bait!” I showed them it in my fly box, truly all artificial materials, looks real though. Still they tried to make me feel bad, it wasn’t “traditional” so I made a another cast and caught a steelhead. Lol! I see it like someone telling me I’m not archery hunting with plastic fletches or carbon shafts. You do you, people, use bamboo and silk line whatever you want within the law. I will do me too.

Rubber worms ruined steelhead fishing for me, haven’t tried them, but it’s also been a while since I’ve been able to target them, I’ve been a purest against plastics in general until recently. Didn’t realize they have a shimmer or gloss that’s hard to match with normal fly tying materials until i picked some up and tried them.

Thanks for the comments, Justin, and can you give me more details? It sounds like you didn't use them for steelhead...or did you use them and they were too effective? Match the hatch had been drilled into me for years. The fly that KILLED flyfishing for me was a big blooper from an 'open vise night' with my fly tying club. I called it "Mimi". I used scraps from my tying bag and just started tying. I started with a #14 curved nymph hook, added a orange bead head and a copper wire body. Finding a patch if chartreuse ice dubbing in a baggy, I added it in as a collar and a pinch of hot pink Para Post as a wing. When I ran out of options one day I tied this on and landed 4 nice fish, in a dozen cast, from a single run. See it on my Instagram @rogueriverflies.

My experience with a fly that killed a bit of flyfishing for me, is the "white bomber" it's a dryfly that is litterally just a floof with a hook in, and the way you fish it, is that you littrally cast that fly over the head of the fish, and the fish won't bite the first time, or the second or the third and so on, but the way this fly is built, is so annoying for the fish, that no matter what, in the end, they will bite and that just kinda takes the fun out of it af you've caught a couple of fish with it

I remember one of the legends of Stillwater fishing over here from the '50s and '60s ( Arthur Cove, or maybe Tom Ivens ) writing about bloodworm fishing. On one of the big stillwaters, Rutland or Blagdon, nobody was having much success. He tied a section from a little red rubber band ( with the bendy bit in it ) onto a hook. Of course the rubber would bend and unbend as the 'fly' was twitched. Result - absolute slaughter! He and his mates kept it to themselves, but after a while he dumped it. It just made a mockery of the sport. I fish a little river in the north of England. Lately indicator (bung) fishing, and its cousins Klink-and-Dink and Euro nymphing have more or less taken over. Huge numbers of trout and grayling are caught ( and released ) sometimes with a minimal investment of skill! I don't think this is very good for the fish. I'd rather pick up two or three on a dry or upstream nymph.

@@TimCammisa I’m in the U.K. so pretty much anything non traditional can be seen as a junk fly, more specifically I’m thinking mop flies, squirmies and egg patterns. An fly fly story? Well my local stream is known as a difficult technical fishery where tiny match the hatch flies are considered the only thing that works, on more than one occasion I’ve tied on size 14 f-fly and scored under the noses of the sneering masses, doesn’t even seem to matter what the body is. Early in the season when we were allowed back on the river after the first round of lockdowns I got a 2.5lb brown in a stream that usually has 1/2 lb average. Was so unusual I got in the local paper with it............ caught on yep a size 14 f-fly🤘
