I have an aunt who had rented an apartment in New York once that had the old "pull chains" on the ceiling lights. She got up in the middle of the night and went to the bathroom and when she pulled the chain to turn the light on, all around the light fixture were hundreds of these black flies. She has no idea how they got in or where they came from, they were all just sitting clinging to the top of the ceiling. She said that she was so freaked out. She went and opened the small window above the toilet hoping that they would leave in the morning. When she opened the door to the bathroom the next morning, there were no flies. She didn't stay in that apartment but for a year and moved out.
