Related joke to hopefully brighten your day. During the Battle of Britain, the BBC sends a radio van down to the south coast to follow the raids. A big one comes in and the Allied fighters rise to meet it. A Hurricane gets shot down, and the pilot bails out. He lands nearby. The reporter runs over. It turns out he’s Scottish. “I say, sir, how was it?” “Och, there were Fokkers to the left, Fokkers to the right, Fokkers all around. I hate them Fokkers.” Embarrassed silence. “For the benefit of our gentle listeners, a Fokker is a type of German aircraft.” “Aye, y'right, but these Fokkers were Messerschmitts.”

the occasional dopamine rush i get when i see a new disaster breakdown video being posted never gets old. i think your videos are some of the most unique ones because of the level of engagement you offer like your humor or visual explanations. it really puts it all together into something very enjoyable edit: i love the irony of how in like almost 90% of these cases it's not the aircraft that is the actual problem and there really isn't anything inherently bad about the plane's design it's just the fact that the people managing them like maintenance workers or the pilots themselves are the ones who always cut a corner to the point where it's deadly

I love that you put so much personality into your videos these days, the de-icing segment in particular was hilarious. You are a brave soul. On a side note, I’ve always loved any plane with an unusual or uncommon design. Maybe growing up in central Australia meant that I only ever saw and flew on Boeing 737s, so anything else looks different and interesting, but I just love the T-tail look. In particular though, I love the Ilyushin Il-62, and now I’m curious if that design had its own quirks.

My first reaction was "No! Not the watermelon dress! I hope that's washable!" If you like the IL-62, there are at least two others that have that same configuration - the British Vickers VC-10 and the Lockheed JetStar business jet. The VC-10 is out of service, but the JetStar is still in use. (The JetStar's not a true T-tail though, more of a mid-tail.)

Your work is amazing, and this video is the pinnacle. Just as an side note, and to cut the Fokker some slack besides your spotless research: My dad flew the F-28 during the mid-eighties and to this day speaks very fondly of it, especially regarding its general sturdiness, reliability and quality of construction (and those Rolls Royce engines). In fact, some of those same airframes, of which a few are from the late 60s and 70s, still fly to this day or have done recently for the Argentine Air Force. Climate and geographic conditions (and airport infrastructure) in this large country differ greatly from one area to the other and the F-28 has shown, in general terms, a solid operational life throughout and is quite loved down here by pilots and mechanics alike. Cheers!

I remember the Air Ontario and the subsequent U.S. Air crash quite well. It was all over the media. Full disclosure, I am from Ontario, but I can tell you with a great degree of confidence that the failure of communication was solely the responsibility of the FAA. We do in fact have official documentation, receipts, etc, proving that the TSB did indeed send the full report to their American counterparts. Anyway, I have been looking forward to your next drop for quite some time, in anticipation. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Your research is exceptional, the level of depth you go into is exceptional, and yet made clear enough for those among us who are laymen. Of course, your videos would not be complete without your quirky sense of humour, and I was not disappointed there either! With much appreciation, cheers from Canada.

The TSB wasn't even involved with the management of the Air Ontario crash investigation. The CASB only controlled the investigation from March 11th to 29th in 1989, at which point control was handed to Moshansky's Commission. The Commission itself admitted that they didn't really send their second interim report to the FAA.

I have many thousands of hours flying these aircraft. They are excellent machines when operated within their limitations. Sadly, commercial pressure, a lack of understanding of the particular characteristics of the wing and inadequate deicing procedures led to these accidents. In the Skopje operation there were also a number of Australian pilots operating the F28s for Palair Macedonian. All highly experienced flying in the European winter. These guys operated without incident as they had a healthy respect for ice and would simply refuse to fly if the aircraft was not free of ice. In my own operation I was once at Munich in the middle of winter with a slot time into Heathrow. If we missed that slot who knows when we would have taken off. We deiced with a 45 minute time to get airborne. We made it to the holding point at deicing + 40 minutes. The wings "looked" clean but it was lightly snowing. Well aware of the limitations of the wing we went back to deice again, just to be sure. Who knows if we would have "made" it or not. We will never know, as accidents that never happened don't get any publicity but myself and my subsequently much delayed pax are here today.

I live in Perth pretty much under the flightpath to Runway 03 at Perth Airport, thus witness a regular parade of Fokker 100 and 70 aircraft. The Fokkers have proven themselves reliable workhorses here since the 1970's. However both Qantaslink and Virgin are now slowly replacing the aircraft with A319s and A220s (QantasLink) and Embraer E190-E2s (Virgin) with some withdrawn aircraft going to Alliance for spares. It should be noted that even though the climate here is generally hot, we still get icing conditions on occasions as a result of tropical storms. Australian here. The Fokkers, all of them, I adore. We operated the aircraft from very early on in their story, dating all the way back to Ansett introducing them in 1970. The F-28 MK1000 was the first jet powered aircraft to ever fly a domestic route in Australia. Due to the fact that it is f..k off hot here basically all the time, the icing issue never reared it's head. Even today, Qantaslink and Virgin Australia still operate F-100s on FIFO services to mining communities in Outback Western Australia. In the hot conditions, the F-100 is on it's element

Only 15 minutes in but I love the effect for the Canadian report with just printing the first page, putting some wear on it and using blank paper for the rest of it. Efficient of saving money and paper whilst also giving the practical effect of showing how large it is.

Genuinely appreciate the demonstration of different deicing fluids as someone who did deicing a handful of times at a local airport, its probably not much better than getting it blown back at you when the wind's really whipping on the pad. That said, we had days of intense snow and ice followed by warmer weather, so the glycol would heat up on the tarmac and the whole airport would smell like molasses. It was nice for the first couple hours.

Always love your Breakdown videos! Side note, the F28 for MSFS is such a dream to fly. I was a passenger on one used by the now defunct Canadian Airlines in the '90s, so I was glad to see the livery included in the package. You feel like you can fly the thing by hand all the way until cruising altitude with ease.

Congratulations on your well-researched and extensive video. I operated the Fokker 100/70 from 2005 until 2013, initially as a First Officer and later as Captain. It was hammered into us, practically from day one of the Type Rating course that one simply did not depart with ANY amount of snow or ice on the wings of the aircraft. I was very particular about this, even to the extent of once climbing up onto the wings myself to remove two very small patches of frost that had formed at the wing roots with a tea towel, since this was quicker than performing a whole de-icing procedure for such a small patch of ice (I also made certain to check that no ice had re-formed immediately prior to our departure). The operator I worked for also insisted that stepladders should be available for us to check the upper surfaces of the wings properly in winter conditions and I was known to become somewhat irate if these were not provided. This also helped to address another vulnerability of the aircraft which you only briefly touched on, which lead to one very serious incident on a Fokker 70 and has caused hull-losses on other aircraft with tail-mounted engines. If a layer of clear ice were to form at the wing roots and then break loose as the aircraft became airborne, where would that ice go? Answer, straight down the engines, a situation which would not enhance the happiness of anyone involved. Vigilance was the only way to prevent this. I greatly enjoyed my time operating the Fokker 100/70, despite their earlier origins they had very modern and capable avionics and cockpit systems for their time. You simply had to be careful and apply the proper procedures when operating them in wintry conditions. The fact that others failed to do so when the dangers of such failure were by then very well-known is simply inexcusable.

I live very close to a Dutch regional airport, EIN. Fokker used to be the pride of Dutch aviation. I used to see Fokkers flying in and out of EIN all the time. Also in wintertime... of which 1 time i was a passenger on a F50 turbo prop. There is even a Fokker F27 as a display piece. Knowing all this i am glad no icing stalls ever happened over here...
