I was in and out of the ER and family doctor multiple times with walking pneumonia, unable to work for weeks, which later became empyema; by the time I was admitted to an actual hospital bed I was going through early signs of sepsis. I was a week away from dying, if that. My lungs had to be drained and then surgery was done to them to physically cut a hardened infection that was antibiotic resistant. Because I was young, nobody believed how bad my symptoms were and that I’d get over it. Yeah I feel this arc.

The one thing that really stuck with me back when this era was happening was how he reacted to all of his well-wishers. Specifically his complete distaste for the 'I don't know what I'd do without you' or 'attempts at empathy' types of comments. No one's going to judge him for how he reacts when he's the one going through the tremendous stress of it all, so I never thought it a bad or wrong take. Instead, it made me heavily question the way I ought to reach out to people going through a crisis of this kind. As much as it used to feel right to want to try to impress upon someone how I felt about them, now it feels worthless, or even selfish. And as cold and direct as 'That sucks, hope you get better' sounds, now I have no idea what else someone would want to hear haha. What a weird takeaway At any rate, thanks for putting this all together, Library. Your masterwork is much appreciated :)

Nah like, I understand that he was going crazy esp when you feel like you're dying. But seriously he was being a dickhead lol. He was just being really cynical and overthinking it because he's in a bad mood bc he was really sick and feeling worse than awful. Like at this point it's just like you really can't respond. Bc anyone else could be cynical and be like "why are you telling us about something we can't do anything about?" Like why even tell anyone anything? I totally understand that people's reactions can be cold or fucked up and not as helpful as they think it will, but imagine being like "I really care about you, I hope you get well soon. I would really miss you if you weren't here" and someone's response being like "I'd be dead, why does how you feel matter???" Most humans have a need to love, be loved, need, and be needed. People like to share that feeling, and try to tell people that they're needed. Just because someone is really sick and dealing with something doesn't mean that they're above criticism. I pretty much agree with the general message, but like the way his mindset about it is is kinda depressing and awful.

Like he’s going through something traumatic and horrible and he literally does not know you, I think it’s fine for you to express your well intentioned feelings and it’s also fine for him to express his response to that, and then ideally the mature and thoughtful person can do exactly what the original commenter said, take that feedback and learn from it to help you better understand the way your words might affect people in the future.

i have a severe disability (osteogenesis imperfecta - aka brittle bones disease) and i learned a very very long time ago, that even when you have a disability and go in to the hospital specifically for something related to your disability, you HAVE to play up your symptoms or they won't take you seriously. if i go in with a broken arm and i calmly am like "hi, i'm here with a broken arm, my pain is at an 8, its pretty bad" what's going to happen is that i will wait there for 3 or 4 hours in excruciating pain, but since its a kind of pain that i'm used to, i look fine and they assume that i AM fine. if instead i go in constantly groaning and grunting, or if i take an ambulance instead of being driven by a friend or family member, and i'm like "UURGGHH, I THINK MY ARM IS BROKEN, MY PAIN IS AT A 8, ITS REALLY BAD HELP" i get a room ASAP and instant pain management. doctoring and triage is FAR more vibes based than we like to think it is. if it's a very serious medical issue, you really HAVE to play it up to be taken seriously and to be seen in a timely manner. its really frustrating. like...i get it, triage is supposed to be about getting to the people in the most danger first, but like bro i have experience with broken bones the least you could do is go "oh this guy has had over 100 bone fractures, he's probably right about his injury, let's give him some pain meds while he waits 4 hours for a room". hospitals are hell and the last place you want to be when you're actually sick or injured and scared. also, downplaying his infection is all haha funny jokes "almost died" fun and games silly time and all, but infections like that can very easily and very quickly turn into sepsis and death. its absolutely reasonable to call that "almost dying", and i say that as someone that once got hit by a truck WHILE I HAVE BRITTLE BONES and had a severe subdural hematoma and very much almost died.

I can't believe that his stool samples took so long. That would have gotten to the heart of the issue so fast, I got some done and they took like three days.
