When they were talking about the Italian restaurants, I had a blast from my past... they mentioned how during prohibition the Italian restaurants would serve their homemade wines to their customers in coffee cups. My husband & I ran an Italian restaurant years ago for an elderly Italian couple who had built it from the ground up, brick by brick. They'd been there for 50 years, but it was getting to be too much work for them, so they hired us to run it. My husband was a chef, & ran the back of the house. I ran the front & did hostess duties. Well, one time we went a whole week serving cocktails out of coffee cups because the owner forgot to send in their liquor license renewal. Not having a current license is a big no-no in the state of Pennsylvania. It could get you a large fine, & possibly get you shut down for a period of time. Thankfully, most of our customers were regulars, & loved coming there, so no one said a word. We didn't get turned in, the renewal was sent in, & all was well. People had a ball, sipping their Martinis & Manhattens from a cup & saucer. They said it made them feel like they were getting away with being naughty, lol. I'd forgotten all about it until it was mentioned in the video. Great memories.😊

Jeffrey, love your work. . Regarding the Chicago "Italian" Beef sandwich. You failed to mention the giardiniere! Typically offered in mild and spicy, it is so good! And what about the beef/sausage combo! Wet, with spicy giardiniere! Portillo's! A place in Portland, OR called Michael's does correct combos, as well as Chicago Style Vienna Beef Chicago Dogs- NO KETCHUP!

I lived in Chicago from 1983 to 1992 in various places around the Near North Side... beginning between Division and North Ave between the Lake and Wells. Then moved to a 3 bedroom apartment around 3900 Broadway... My two roommates were sisters; one worked at a Steakhouse off of Michigan Ave and the other worked at Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder... across the street from the warehouse where the St. Valentine's Day Massacre took place. I still crave their deep dish pizza! This video made me so nostalgic!

Just before I moved to California in 1977, I had my first taste of a Mexican style taco, carne asada, on a corn tortilla with onions and cilantro. Mom made "white people " tacos. Premade hard she'll tortillas with ground beef, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Not what I would now call real Mexican food. Besides, Mexico food here is more Tax Mex. Mexico has several different states and many variations. I like the Mexican food here in Cali.😅

I lived in Waukegan, Illinois back in 1990 when my ex-husband was in the Navy and we ate at this Greek restaurant in Chicago and as soon as I saw that guy saying OPA (or however you spell the word) on this video I saw the restaurant inside and I'm thinking 🤔 I've been in that restaurant before and the food there was really good, the Moussaka was out of this world, the stuffed grape leaves, the spinach and feta cheese pastries and the baklava was a feast to remember we also had the flaming cheese as well. This video seemed from the late 80's to early 90's and probably most of these places and people are long gone ( May they RIP 🙏🏼🫓🥖🥯🥩🍔🌭🥪🥨🍟🍕🫔🌮🌯🥙🧆🥘🍝🫕🥗🍲🍛🍜🦪🦞🍣🍤🥡🍚🥟🍙🥠🍨🥮🍦🥧🍰🍮🧁🍭🍬🍫🍩🍪🍿🍺🍻🍹🍸🍶😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I moved away from there many years ago. I've always loved to cooked and learned how to make genuine Italian beef (I got the recipe from my buddy's dad who owned a beef/hotdog stand on the Northwest side), how to make the fresh lamb and beef mixture to cook up for gyros, I make my own fresh polish sausage from scratch, Lou Malnati's deep dish pizza, and also genuine cracker crust (Chicago tavern style) pizza dough recipes. I found the closest brands of hot dogs to Vienna Beef hotdogs are either Klements Chicago Brand hotdogs or Costco (Kirkland Signature) Beef hot dogs, both are made from bull meat just like the Vienna brand dogs are. Nathan's and Hebrew National beef dogs are too salty and don't have the right texture or taste. Now if I could only find poppy seed hotdog buns in my neck of the woods... For many years, just about every bar in Chicago had an Old Style sign in their windows.

That was excellent. Grew up in the Chicago suburbs. My family immigrated to Chicago (Bensenville Il.) from Germany, in the late 1700’s got a call from the city of Chicago a few years back(20+ years ago) they wanted to know where I wanted my dead relatives buried! I said I think they are already buried. LOL!!! Well the O Hare expansion was going through an old German cemetery and the remains needed to be moved. I had them moved by the rest of the family. They are now in Elm Lawn with the rest of us.

That soul food, is the same as Polish food. They call it slave food. Well, we Slavs, are the reason the word "slave" made it into the English dictionary. We were the original slaves, way before America even existed, hence seeing the food being exactly the same as our Polish food, it's possible the food traveled from early slavery of the Roman Empire to later African slavery 🤔🤔🤔 greetings from the Northern Peruvian Amazon Jungle 🌴🌴🌴
