I went to her grave a few years ago for my 16th birthday. My mom and I bought some cleaning wipes and a little dust pan and cleaned her grave for her. We also bought her some flowers and a pack of cigarettes. I’m happy to see people are still going there and leaving gifts and keeping her memory alive 😊❤️

That's so kind of you! I travelled all the way from Poland to visit her and to give her flowers and hand sculpted little bird. That's so unfair that she was forgotten for decades. I am also glad to see that she became more popular since last year and more people want to visit her resting place.
@dr37546 жыл бұрын
forgotten for decades? you have got to be kidding me. she could not be more famous from the day she left for nyc until today. the jean stein book was a runaway best seller in 1982, only one decade after she died, so even regular, non-hipster people knew of her. just because warhol abandoned her does not mean she was ever totally forgotten, she just withdrew into her substance abuse. even her death was well publicized at the time.
@MazdaIsphahan6 жыл бұрын
d r When the book was released people wanted to read about her life and yes she became more known in the USA. Later only a group of people cared about her and she became popular again after the movie Factory Girl. When I was in Santa Barbara people didn’t know who she was. This city is her hometown, so I think they SHOULD know! Also, almost nobody visited her grave before. When I was there there for the first time there were old gifts from past few years...nothing new. I think the grave keeper took all of them away, because when I visited for the second time there was only a bird that I gave her when I was for the first time and there was a big construction with flowers, probably gaven by her husband on the date of their wedding anniversary. Also when I tell people about her, nobody knows who she was and I have to explain. In Europe she isn’t popular, maybe some people from England and France know about her, because of the movie Ciao! Manhattan and Andy’s movies. By the way...there should be a gallery related to her with her belongings and her artwork, but as I read her family gave everything to GoodWill. Now you see how they cared...

If you're interested, try the book, "Edie, an american girl". by Jean Stein & George plimpton. It's considered a real classic. It's recollections for about 50 people, family friends, famous folk from the past. It puts together an interesting picture of Edie, she had a pretty tragic life. Her family was a horror show.

I always wondered when her mother died, and I see by her gravestone that it was in 1988. Knowing that now, I also wonder if she could bring herself to read Edie’s biography which was published several years before her death, or if she just tried to deny / avoid the whole thing? It would’ve been agonizing for her if she did read it, but the entire saga was partly her fault, so she wasn’t just a victim of this tragedy.

I've known about Edie since 2003 (20 years now!), which is when I started collecting books on Andy Warhol and the Factory. I was also a huge Velvet Underground fan, so there was no way I couldn't have known about her. The Ciao! Manhattan DVD was watched so many times by me and my friends while we were high and drunk because we used to think it was so hilarious. Having recently rediscovered the film after 18 years, my opinion has obviously changed. It is such a SAD and depressing film that leaves me with such a void inside my chest. She really is one of those emblematic figures that represent the excesses of the 1960s. Definitely NOT a role model for anyone, except maybe in style.
