String is attached to his right wrist - you can see a little armband there. I'm guessing it works like those retractable name-tag cords, but with a more finely tuned tension on it. That's why it returns straight to his hand after it hits the camera. Still a great deal of dexterity in the way he manipulates it, and catching it in his left hand like he does makes it so real and beautiful. Genius.

I would guess that the key is to have a center of balance that is very close to the hilt. The you just attach a string at the exact center of balance. If yoiu need movement that needs to looks like it changes lenght, attach the the other end of the string to your non dominant hand, loop the string around your other hand and put them closer or farther to vary the lenght. Like a rope dart.
