The Forced 2025 Google Pixel Update is not Okay

Isn't it a little suspicious that Google would update a phone over a year after their end of support that makes it nearly unusable.
No joke, my pixel 4a, that used to last me all day now uses about 1% of charge a minute of use... What are we trying to do here? I've not seen any reports of phones bursting into flames, and it seems to be primarily effecting Pixel 4a phones. Also odd how they are saying they will reimburse $50 cash or $100 credit towards a new phone straight away... Just give me the option to get rid of the update, I'll even sign a waiver of liability if that's what it takes.

I have a Pixel 4a, same problem. Since i work often with batteries, I decided to delve deeper and i found that the battery is not charging to full voltage anymore. The optimum max voltage for a standard lithium polimer battery is in the neighborhood of 4.2V, now it only reaches 3.9V. Almost 30% is not even considered. And this is all software controlled.

If your phone has other technical issues, they either fix all(for which you have to pay) or nothing will be fixed 😅😅 they found little color fade on back panel. And now they told me to change the back panel so that they can replace the battery which will cost 3.6k INR 😂😂😂tho my battery was in good condition since I replaced it last year but this #sh*t update ruined it completely

Have my Pixel 4a for over 3 years now. That update ruined my battery too. I flashed a fresh Android 13 to it. And it's fine again, but notification about that update always here, even if turn off system updates through Developer options. And I'm afraid to restart my Pixel, cuz it might install that stupid update anyways... Edit: with DNS setting blocking Google update links the notification about this dumb update is gone.

Honestly all I can recommend to everyone having the same issue is just unlocking the bootloader (quite easy for Pixels), and then switching to custom firmware (LineageOS with Google Apps, etc.) which is also quite easy.

@@bashaar_yt Yes it would wipe the existing data, so you'd want to make sure everything is backed up first. LineageOS and Google's Android are both based on the Android Open Source Project. So essentially you're still using Android, just not Google's version of Android. For the battery issue, I don't know.

@@kuniokun9117 Don't do it if you don't have phone to fall back onto (or the means to buy a new phone) and always backup all your data before you begin. Pixels are on the easier side of flashing LineageOS. If to start and anything doesn't work exactly as in the guide, stop. The guide will tell you this, too.

I read somewhere on Reddit that this situation arose because some of the batteries are flawed and have a chance of bursting. Someone mentioned that they went to check their device and noticed a bulge on the side where the battery is located. I decided to check mine as well (I have a protective case, so I couldn't see it easily) and also found a noticeable bulge. Any theories?

My first Pixel 4a had the same issue. After some time the battery got really bad that I couldn't even charge to turn on the phone properly. Yes and there was a big bulge on the back side of my phone. Had the same issue with the pixel 7a and now maybe with my new pixel 4a again. I will leave Google for now.

When a lithium battery starts to bulge it has a higher risk of leaking or catching fire. Be very careful with it.

I went to replace the battery in a nearby shop and they refused because there is a tiny crack in the corner back (that was also due to their faulty design) , I thought about getting the credit and buying a new battery but it is out of stock everywhere!! And for the 100 USD credit, they increased the prices for the phones on the website just for this!!! It's a planned scam.

I been using my 4a since late 2022 which is actually a second hand phone. The phone was doing really fine and I had no reason to get a new one. Even when they first sent me the mail about that update, I read it and tried to skip the update. However the update notification would pop up everytime so eventually I updated the phone. Now google tells me to replace my battery. The phone itself drains all of its charge at idle mode. I dont even get to use it.

I brought mine 4 years ago when they first come out, everything running great until last weeks update and it is now on charge all the time, absolutely ruined the phone so ive had to buy a second hand Samsung s10 so ive got a useable phone when im out all day with no access to a charger, i was hoping to keep the 4a for a few more years, i will not buy another pixel phone now out of principle.

This is so incredibly frustrating. My mother has the pixel 4a. This will suck for her so bad. The pixel 4a also had this other issue, don't know if anybody here has experienced the same or not, where the rear fingerprint scanner has completely stopped working. Idk if it was after an update or just happened randomly but this has meant that she needs to unlock her phone via on screen passcodes/patterns EVERYTIME. I swear sometimes it seems that Google runs their hardware dept as an afterthought since they know that their market share is going to be miniscule and all we, as loyal customers, can do is beg them to give us an customer experience that we deserve and paid for.

That's so crazy that I'm seeing you post this video, very timely. This just happened to me last night, this morning I wake up to a notice telling me the same thing. All day I've been struggling with this battery on this phone, ended up ordering a Pixel 7 on Amazon and having it shipped here in a couple days. Had this 4a for 3.5 years, love this phone. But i have read because theres not much support for this older ohone, there may be security risks to my data on this phone now 🤷🏻 regardless, this battery is super weaksauce now, its like every function is nearly a Herculean effort to get it done. The battery now maybe can last while running KZbin for maybe an hour? Tops? Its pathetic so i went ahead and am just ordering a new phone.

Not a Pixel owner (I have a OnePlus 6T that's slightly older than the Pixel 4), but I avoided the later software updates on my phone for this exact reason. Never ever update your older phone until you've done a fair bit of digging on the relevant forums regarding bugs/issues of that update. I stuck with Android 10 and a security patch from July 2021, but atleast my battery and everything else works alright, those who updated their OnePlus 6T to Android 11 suffered from various issues not limited to battery life. This seems universal across all phones in one way or another.

I had my 4A battery changed 2 weeks before the update was announced. I haven't had a any battery issues and I don't see battery saver on, but my phone's performance overall got significantly bad. With how bad support always was with androids. I've learned that if I don't get a new phone within six months of release, it's a waste of money because you're paying full price for the phone minus 6 months of support. It gets worse when you buy a previous year's model the next, unless you manage to find it on a good sale.

Yeah it's so weird. Imagine a car manufacturer releasing a model and then saying you get 3 years of support but only from the date the car was first released. No one would fall for that. But with phones it's the most common thing to happen. If you buy a phone that was introduced 3 years ago and still available in the stores today, you're actually buying a new product for full price but without any support. It's crazy they're allowed to do that.

A few of their old Pixel models just seem to be having issues these days. I have a 4a ruined by this update too but I've also had an older Pixel die on me which was why I had the 4a. It was a Pixel 3 that just suddenly died overnight on the charger. Woke up to it powered off and nothing would happen when I tried turning it on. Stuck in EDL mode with no way to even know why. I suspect battery. (I found out it was in EDL mode by the device name it showed up as on computer when plugging it into USB) I replaced it with a used 4a. It worked great up until this month. Update created the same issues. I got the $50 appeasement from them already. For now I just installed LineageOS 22 on it which got rid of the issue since it's now on a custom rom. Mainly to make it usable for the next few months. I was about to get a new phone anyways. Mom getting tax refund soon and she plans to give me her phone when she gets a new one. Currently she has a Pixel 6 or 7. Forget the exact model but it's a few generations newer then what I have. I don't think I've bought a flagship phone brand new ever. They are just too expensive these days. Always got them used or as handme downs from a relative. The $50 appeasement pretty much covered 90% of what I paid to get the phone. I recall paying maybe $70 or so for it used on Ebay some years ago. Battery still runs it well enough if on a custom rom. On stock rom before update I did notice the phone would suddenly shut down if I let the battery get to 20% or less and try and use something like the camera so the battery did seem to be on it's way out but I was still getting acceptable run times out of it. The battery update pretty much made it unusable. Had to turn off the phone to charge it since I noticed it would charge better while off. Of coarse in the end I went to hell with it and just put a custom rom on it. Lost access to Cash App and Google RCS but I don't really care about RCS and I just moved Cash App to a junk phone for the few times I need to use it. (using custom roms breaks certain financial apps. PayPal App seems to not care though. Could still use that on a custom rom) I managed to get the back off the Pixel 3 so sometime soon I'm gonna see if it needs a new battery and if the new battery doesn't fix it then I know the flash is what died instead and will have to replace the mobo. Hopefully just the battery went bad. Seems like it won't cost much to get those parts either. Don't even plan to use the 4a as a backup phone anymore. Once I get the next handme down phone from mom I will retire the 4a and try and get the Pixel 3 back up and running. The glass back pretty much broke into pieces when I took it apart though but it still seems to fit into the clear rubber case I have for it so I may not even replace that. I've used double sided tape to hold the thumb print sensor in place. It's not gonna be my main phone anyways so it will probably be fine. Never dropped a phone into a body of water so definitely don't care that it's not water proof anymore. :P I hate water proof phones anyways. They are impossible to service now a days. Need a heat gun to unsticky the glued on parts and crap. So annoying. I wish they'd go back to back panels you can pull off with just removing screws like the good old days. :(

I clicked on the 100 credit to see terms and conditions, it auto validated and did not let me go back to the 50 transfer option (which i hear had its own issues). I received the code two weeks later and tried it in the store : It does not stack with basic site wide price reductions which was the only thing to potentially keep me from going to the competition. I refuse to pay their exhorbitant price for an 8a or to wait for the 9a (which will also be exhorbitant on their own store). Looking into other phones options as a replacement but damn I did not expect to have to drop hundreds this month when my 4a was absolutely fine.

My 4a worked great before the update. Rarely charged it above 80% and it would last all day, now I'm charging it 4-5 times. So what is Google's solution: give me a $100 credit on their website towards another pixel (I can get the pixel for hundreds cheaper elsewhere), replace the battery with another one that will work just as poorly, or give me $50 through a company I've never heard of that wants my SS# and charges me a $30 subscription if I don't cancel. All of these end with me spending hundreds more for no reason. Think its time for my family and I to consider moving on from google!

apart from the heating, pixel 7 ...I am saddened by the poor quality of the back (from the beginning you could see that the lower part was a little looser) which, because I kept it in my pocket and the zipper got stuck, the glass and plastic cracked a little, after a few days it all extended ... I had changed my battery just 3 months ago. This is a scam to make you buy a new device. Because not everyone is going to visit a store to replace battery. And the refund of 50$ is also not a straight forward thing, when google has its own google pay app why use a third party for processing 50% compensation?

@@koacado They don't just send you 50 USD I'm afraid. You have to sign up for Payoneer, which is a corporate payments hub that you have to pay an annual subscription for. Not even worth the hassle, I doubt that many people have claimed the 50 dollar cash offered.

I had a similar issue on my Samsung fold 4 after an update. It told me to replace the battery. I managed to fix that error message and improve the battery by cycling through the near full power of the battery from 100% to 2-5% two or 3 times without charging it midway and only once it reached 5% would I charge, and always back to 100 before removing from the charger. Fixed it right up. Maybe try that, see if the replace battery thing goes away too and longevity improves?

My pixel 4a had already almost blew up once, this was before this new update. It kept boot looping and no matter what I did could not get it to stop. It got so hot I was scared and put it in a metal container and left that out on the lawn incase it blew up. Once the battery died I plugged it back in and it did actually charge and turn on OK but the OS is corrupted now and none of the google play services work. Phones used to come with replace it youself pop out batteries and there's literally 0 reasons besides money that they don't still do it. I could still be using that phone another 4 years probably if I could do that but no, google doesn't make enough money so 4 years was a hard cap i guess...

@moses5161 If you’re getting the phone from a third-party seller, then no. Some people have commented that they’ve gotten the battery replaced, and it fixed the issue with the low life, but the battery warnings have not gone away still.

I excepted the free new battery but now the shop that was to fit it says because the screen has a crack (only a hairline and still worked perfectly) that as the screen has to be removed to fit the new battery they will only do it if I pay for a new screen at the same time

Nither I can afford a new one at this time and what I have is of no use. Just 30 mins of navigation brings my battery down to 20%. I cant use my phone more than 2 hours before charging. I found a Reddit post walking you through out to 'rollback' the update, but it involves connecting your phone to a PC and, surprise surprise, my phone is not recognized by my Windows 10 PC because of, apparently, a previous update?? I'm unbelievably frustrated with this situation and want to try and 'fix' it if I can, but I'm totally at a loss.

replacing the battery solves the problem, apparently. I bought a pixel 8a which i wouldnt recommend. its $400 bucks, look at the spec difference. not worth it. its the same phone. this is a ploy to get ppl buying their newer phones.

Your phone should show up in Windows - make sure you have the android developer drivers for it and have ADB debugging enabled in Developer options 😉

Good thing I have a 4-year old POCO phone with LineageOS and have replaced the battery myself with an even bigger one than what shipped from factory. I will be using it for a little more until something good comes out. And no one will force me to install an update that makes the phone obsolete by design.

It's NOT a question of crying like a baby somebody said just before, its a question of ANGER! - This update was mandatorily pushed OTA - YES, battery charge and capacity have been voluntarily turned to MISERABLE by software means - All previous system images for this phone have been erased from google site >> The google guys ABSOLUTELY WANT this update to be applied to ALL concerned devices, WHY? They tell NOTHING explicite about BATTERY FIRE ISSUES, but the evident conclusion is that they sold BLLSHT hardware to their client and they no longer worry about! the poor compensations you can obtain after a real assault course is NOT enough ($100 if you really want to test again their consideration for customers or $50, here I cry). Battery replacement for free would be the solution as long as you live in the right country, not my case! Some users in the early time successfully came back to a previous system image before to lock any further OTA update, others decided to turn to alternatives like LineageOS... Their Pixel 4a will continue to charge with initial factory parameters, wait and see if they eventually set fire in some houses or cars... Cheers from the old continent

It is contradictory that why to push such update that draines battery horribly. My phone goes 100 to 25% just after browsing 10-15 minutes. Before the January update there is no any battery draining issue. Just after after update wtf🤬

i used to have a p4. on it's 4th year of usage it decided to turn off and never turn again. it doesn't respond to a charger (wired or wireless) and the buttons do nothing.

My 4a 5g just started going off randomly about a year and a half ago. Sometimes it would refuse to charge. Finally it just decided to brick. Sometimes it goes on, sometimes not. Very disappointing. It got worse after the January update last year.

Yeah, planned obsolescence is so out of hand. Gotta find the right people to "Luigi" and make that a much more regular thing. Until then, I've read that downgrading the OS and stopping auto-updates returns battery performance to normal. I didn't want to spend my day researching this stuff, but it's either that, or spend it researching better phone companies.

I had no issues with my Pixel 4a till the update of death! My phone was in mint condition, no scratches, no damage, nothing at all to say there was ever a problem with it. After a lot of discussion from the Google rep on call I decided to send it for the battery replacement. BIG MISTAKE. 5 days later they sent me an estimate of an additional $50 to change the back glass (that's what they call the back panel). I asked for proof of damage and the first image is of my phone with the IMEI and the next is of a hairline crack near the jack which is not even noticable. Then they say they will not give me the partial repair of just the free battery and I need to pay if I want the phone fixed at all! I asked for my phone back because I spent a good deal of money buying it and hardly got 3 yrs with it. I will not spend another $50 on something you should have fixed for free for your fault Google! What a shit show!

I had the same thing happen. Here are a couple of options I've researched that you might be interested in as well. 1. There is a 50 dollar kit to replace the battery yourself. This requires some handiness. And some people have said they still have the issue even after having their battery replaced (even by the repair shops). 2. Flash the OS to Lineage OS. Several people have reported this fixes the issue and are happy with the swap. However, this could potentially cause a heating/fire issue if you don't also replace the battery. 3. Unofficially "DownPatch" your 4a to remove the update. I've heard people say this is possible but didn't look much into it. This could also potentially cause a fire/heating issue with the battery. 4. Buy a new phone. Mint (in the US) has some pretty good deals and cheap plans right now. $15 a month for unlimited data (for 1 year). Galaxy A15 5g for $60. Pixel 9 for $399 . I'm going to do #4 and when my replacement phone comes in I'm going to replace the battery and flash my 4a to LineageOS to keep it as a backup or sell it.

There is an issue with some of the batteries. They put the update to ensure phones aren't exploding and are giving you money for a free battery replacement. A lot of people are getting a FREE brand new battery on a 4 year old phone that probably needs a new battery anyways. Just get your battery replaced. What more do you want?

No, Google is targeting specific serial numbers and offering to repair or money back, this isn't planned obsolecence this update "fixed" faulty batteries. By fixed I mean they must have found a bad batch and so are stopping the phone charging fully on those serial numbers. If it was simply planned obsolecence they wouldn't be offering free battery replacement.

Yes man, this update really sucks, Please GOOGLE perform a rollback of this dumb update!!! Why did Google reduced the battery full charge capacity of the affected models from 3.080 mAh to about 1.600 mAh??? No usefull information came from Google why this update was necessary, was there an air crash because of a burning Pixel 4a or something like that??? I have 3 of these phones and for me all are now almost useless and I think you will also get less money now if you are selling it. Before the update my phones had a battery lifetime from about 2-3 days, now maximum 15 hours. Since a while I'm thinking about to buy a new Google phone because I like them, but now I definitely will switch to another brand. Google never again!

My 4a, 3 days after the update, battery went south FAST. It could only remain at 6% charge on the charger! I felt like it was doing a heart transplant when I was transferring data to the new phone. The phone died minutes after the soul bond was complete, and my perfectly good 4yr old phone died right in front of me. it was kinda sad.... Then my new pixel 8a turned on. Halleluyaaah! Wait.... what? .....why does the screen rez look the same? why does the storage still say 128gb? ..... Is this the same PHONE?!?!? Alternative solution is they have to remove the screen entirely to do a battery replacement, and if the glue doesnt break free just so, screen broken. Sometimes replacing the battery also means replacing the screen for insurance/billing purposes. And even if that is all successful, your phone def isnt water proof anymore. I ended up buying bought an 8a, but damn is this thing heavy. fuck you google. my 4a was working just fine!!!

another example why people intentionally dont update is because of problems like this. there is a simple solution for you guys though, just enable developer options and turn on USB debugging. then use the android flash tool to install an older android version of your choice and everything will go back to being stable again. this is the beauty of android vs ios. once you update your ios version, theres no going back unless you do jailbreaking and all that stuff, but it's not super easy like the android flash tool.

Also even if you DO get the old version flashed... you will need to setup firewalls and other things to prevent your phone from automatically downloading the "MANDATORY" evil update again. You can also switch the OS to Graphene or LineageOS.

Except the free battery is only available is some countries. And you might be out of a phone for 7-15 days while its in repair. And most importantly, if you have ANY damage (small cracks, warping, ANYTHING) then the shops will refuse to work on it. The battery issue warped my phone slightly and now I have a WARPED phone with a shitty battery that they won't replace. It isn't a good deal.
