72 bhp for the regular 1.6 pinto which was fitted to the L and the GL. The 1.3 was the only one still using the crossflow in the UK

The MK2 has always been my favourite Capri. It's such a beautiful, clean and pure shape. It's absolutely gorgeous.

Brought a 1600 calypso in 1992 loved it so surprised how lovely it was so sold it for a 4 speed early 2.8 injection bloody brilliant.... Still miss great 70,s 80,s an 90,s cars Great times to be young and driving..., no speed cameras, better quieter road's lot less pot holes.... very late at night drove all the way from Bude to North Lincolnshire in a little over 3hrs.... fantastic times.... not like the evangelical driving times we are being "driven " down now!

Great review, love the MK2. Slight correction… the normal 1.6 Pinto with the Ford carburettor was 72bhp not 82. The GT was 88.

Love them, many happy memories of driving them. Had a 1.6L, a 2.0GT and 3.0litre Ghia. Would love to have another one if finances allowed, but they are fetching silly money for a good one. I can't believe it's 50 years since the mark 2 came out. Suddenly I feel old.

Bought a mk 2 1.6 GL in 1984, my first car and everything went wrong with it. Eventually a bus ran into the back of me whilst I was waiting at red light. That was the end of that!

My first car as an 18yr old in 1978, was a 1975 N reg MK2 3000GT, insured in my Dad's name with me as a named driver, you could do that back then!😂 Never even considered anything else, it just had to be a 3 litre Capri. I really wanted a MK1 3000 GXL with the four headlights but they weren't that common even then and after looking at a couple of rust buckets decided on the MK 2. Carnival red with the ubiquitous black vinyl roof and factory sunroof. Happy days.🙂

The MK2 seems to be the most rarely seen version of the Capri these days. There is actually a white one with Gold which I believe are even rarer that. The black and gold cars. Back in the eaely 80's my Dad owned a yellow MK2 Capri 1.6s with a black vinyl roof and the addition of a graphic equaliser which no doubt was the height of sophistication.

Four engine options of the Mk2 Capri, the underpowered 1300, the 1600, 2000 and the powerful 3000 with twin exhausts. A more practical hatchback than the saloon Mk1 before the Mk2 with square headlamps restyled into the Mk3 with four round headlamps. Had a secondhand yellow 2000 Ghia, RDA899P in 1979 before some scumbag stole it in 1980 never seen again.

My Dad had a 1600 GL in the early 80’s. I think it was an R reg, by that point they changed the stalks. The indicator stalk was on the left and the lights and wipers went from being switches on the dash to stalks on the right. This set up continued on the mk3.

Great to see such a survivor of a Mk2. But I always preferred the Mk3 with it's quad headlamps and built in front spoiler......just that bit sportier! My first was an '87 1.6 Laser, probably in 1990. It was uncool then as hot hatches were the thing to have, but being brought up on TV programmes like The Professionals and The Sweeney (not to mention the US imports like Starsky & Hutch and The Dukes of Hazzard) it had to be a rear wheel drive coupe for me. That was followed by a few 2.8 Injection models.......now those had the "go" to match its looks! Now I'm into Mustangs.....the Capri's American cousin :)

Had one with the silver pin stripes instead of the JPS gold, when I sold it they were queuing up, nearly got my money back after 12 mths ownership. Mate had a Dolomite sprint and we'd have spirited drives across the New Forest, good times.

Had the 2.0S back in the 70's in the JPS colours,I never saw a GT model in the JPS colours,I started off with MK1 1600xl [DAYTONA YELLOW],then a 2.0S in Roman Bronze,[great colour]wrote that off then the JPS 2.0 last..it took me and my pal Gary down to the South of France and back without a blip..oh I miss them...the soulless cars of today

Think you will find that the mk2 never had a 1 6 crossflow,was allways a pinto,only the mk 1 had the 1.6 crossflow
@danielball75954 ай бұрын
Correct, however, it was the Mk1 pre facelift 1300 and 1600 that were fitted with crossflows up until the Mk1 was facelifted in 1972. 👍

What Ford got right and BL got wrong was making very basically-engineered cars that looked appealing and were usebale and easy to drive. The (early) Escort, Capri, Cortina & Granada were live axle, RWD live axle, basic engines with iron blocks & iron heads, BL were messing around with hydraulic/gas suspension, 4 valves/cylinder, alloy heads, fuel injection, overdrive and i don't think that the buying public was that bothered about those features in the 1970s. The Austin 11oo/1300 sold very well and probably would have sold just as well with regular suspension.
