The Ford Cortinas of 1962 through to 1982, with several of their Ford of Germany "Taunus" cousins, make up this 110+ photo collection.
Various examples of the Ford Cortina Mk1 are dotted throughout this collection, including example(s) of the Lotus Cortina Mk1, the Super, GT, and the estate versions. In 1966 the Mk2 came along, and examples of Cortina-Lotus Mk2, 1600E, and less plushly-appointed versions are all to be found, photographed by myself over the last 20 or so years at classic car shows and in motor museums. The Mk3 of 1970 to 1976 features regularly, as do the Mk4 (1976 - 1979) and the Mk5 (1979 - 1982) Cortinas. Rarities include the South Africa-market XR6 (based on the Mk5), and the wild Starcraft camper kit which uses a Mk3-Mk5 Cortina as its donor vehicle. A replica of the Ford Saxon proposal of the early 1960s also features, as does the ex-Bill Bengry London-to-Sydney Mk2 rally car. A fastback version of the Mk3, the Taunus GXL from Germany, provides an interesting comparison to the Mk3s marketed here in the UK. Several V6 Savages, based on the Mk2, are also to be found here, as are Crayford convertibles.
Comments welcomed as always, the Ford Cortina was a huge seller for the parent company throughout the 1960s and 1970s so plenty of people here will have their own experiences of these cars, good and bad I imagine! The Ford Sierra that came along after was a very different looking vehicle indeed, even if under the skin it wasn't much more advanced than the outgoing Cortina in many cases.

My dad was a Ford man, he learnt to drive in a Ford popular, after passing his driving test he got an Anglea 100e then the 105e then bought a mk1 Cortina FAN 950D. I went with him to collect his new mk2 Cortina, in the showroom was a car under wraps, he was asked if he would like to come to the launch of the Ford Capri, which we did. It was my dream car when I saw it, I did buy one in the seventies, a 1600GT in fern green with a black vinyl roof. My dad went on to buy the mk3, mk4 and mk5 Cortinas. Fond memories 😊

I left the army in '72 as a mechanic and my first civvy job was in a Ford garage. Going from AEC 10 tonners to Cortinas, Capris and Granadas was a bit of a culture shock. Two other blokes and I ended up doing the pre-delivery inspections (or putting right the factory cock ups) for the sales department . If you could see how the Dagenham 'tinas were put together, unlike the Dutch made ones, you would never have bought one. They were shockers. I've still got a container full of bits where the factory workers would throw a handful of bolts in the cab to bolt the seats down, or not, and leave the excess in there. Bulbs was another one, and door lock buttons, all sorts of things. Old Henry would've had a seizure. Vinyl roofs were often fitted free to hide the worst paint jobs! Mind you, they all came with a quarter tank of petrol, which usually mysteriously evaporated into three other cars. Ah, happy, simple times. I ended up buying a 1980 MkV in '83 which I sold fully reconditioned in 2017 and instantly regretted it.

For a working class man they where among the best you could buy on top very cheap maintenance easy parts availability easy to work on them on the road outside your flat, I had to buy a new engine on my 1300 Cortina after the conrod came out on the side of the block my fault ( fitted an Escort 1300 GT head on it) I bought a brand new short block in its wooden grate at just over £60 it even had the timing chain on except the timing chain tensioner was missing n I changed it all outside on the road, when u r young with little money its this or no car, Fords I also had the most fun with them I'll always have a soft spot for Fords

The bright yellow mk3 9:23 is unusual. It has square headlights which I thought were only fitted to the 2000E but isn't badged as such with no vinyl roof....Love the Glamcabs sign at 9:46 - car from "Carry on, Cabby"!....11:27 bright orange mk1: "Best in show "for me. Love Cortinas. My Dad had a horrible orange mk32000E, a brand new purple mk5 1600L and a used Gold mkV 2 .0 Ghia, same as the one at 18:15.....Thankyou so much great collection!

That bright yellow Mk3, @9:23 - it's a facelift Mk3 and they got the rectangular headlights from XL level up. So, that one is an XL. Also had the same dash that was in the Mk4/5, not the "slope-away" dash of the early Mk3s. That yellow one has the optional underriders that were standard on the E. It also has extra non-standard black on the grille - they had nearer to a dark grey metallic painted on them. Non standard door-mirrors, and wheel trims of course !! (Nerd alert over!)

@@Mancozeb100 Thanks a lot for the info. Can you tell me if I'm right that the car used in the TV series "Life On Mars" is a "cut and shut?" with a GXL front end and a 2000E back end? In the show it's called a 2000E and is badged as such at the rear and on rear door pillar but has a GXL front end?

Great collection again.Had a couple of Cortina’s,one either side of passing my test. The first was a very early 4 door with the old 1500 engine which the first mk2’s had. The second was a mk4 1.6 L in hearing aid beige. The paint had been applied with a roller and was about 5mm thick. The headlights were so bad it seemed to make it darker when you switched them on. I got hold of an early my 3 brochure recently and was amazed to read that a bench front seat was available as an option at least up until the face lifted version was launched,I’d be surprised if any survive. With reference to one of the comments, the facelift mk3 had rectangular lights (halogen)on XL models upwards. Also, although we all refer to them as mk5’s,officially Ford never called them that and they were marketed as the “Cortina 80”.

That brings back some happy memories of my old Cortina whose registration number was FTT 321 D and if I was careful I could change the D to an O and then the number became FTT 3210!! Naughty I know but good fun at the time. It started life as a 1200 de luxe and finally became a Twin Cam with some suspension changes so it could be rallied in my home county of Devon. It was a great car and apart from engine failure when the change to a twin cam engine was bought about by finding one in the back of a customers garage! Koni shock absorbers we’re added as were some changes to the front end to make it more stable. Thanks for bringing back those memories it was really interesting for me now that getting close to 80!! One other thing I sadly recall was a member of our club, Torbay Motor Club, had his Lotus Cortina catch fire in a field of straw which was being used as a stage on a rally. I say sadly because the aluminium body disintegrated in minutes and long before the fire brigade came to its rescue. 🚘🚒

I like all Cortina models, but the one I bought when I was just 12 years old, I still own, a 1974 Mk.3., that cost £1,575 in 1976, with only 250 miles on the clock, now following the vast restoration of the bodywork, she is 100% rust free and looking Brand New again, just like she was 46 years ago when I fell in love with her in the showroom. I enjoyed this video, always nice seeing the Nations favorite car, for 20 years of production, the Ford Cortina range.

As well as being a BMC family, my Dad was very much a Ford man. He used to race an Anglia back in the day with an old school mate of his (Rob Halliday) and built his own engines. Like the A30s and A35s, we were never without a four-cylinder Ford gracing the drive (or parked in pride of place in the garage). Although he had many others prior, my earliest memory is a red 67 MkII GT....which he traded for a white-and-orange 68 MkII Super with a 289 cubic inch Mustang engine and MkIV Zephyr floor change manual box. Mum never forgave him for that - especially as the vehicle was a little temperamental and required much fettling to keep it operational. It melted a piston, blew a gearbox, lunched the diff, caught fire under the bonnet and destroyed a lot of wiring....but it was a ripper when she was running right. We then had a MkIII Cortina GT (in Pacific blue metallic), which he sold to buy a MkIV Ghia (in Roman Bronze), which was sold to buy a 6-month-old Chrome yellow 1980 MkII Escort 1600 Sport. We had a white / gold roofed 1970 MkII Super around the same time, that Dad threw one of his modified 1600 crossflow engines into and then the Escort was sold and he bought a pale yellow 68 MkII Super estate. This was a great car and we did a lot of miles in that. It too got the treatment and the 1600 was bored, cammed and treated to a pair of 40mm Dellorto carbs, which made it very quick indeed. We had another 67 MKII GT in a very dark blue for a short period of time after this. All of Dad's Cortinas had Rostyle wheels - and if not on it as standard, they soon got them. After driving my A30 for a while after getting my license, I wanted to trade up to a MkII Cortina as I loved that shape the best. I wanted a GT or GTE (the locally assembled version of what you call the 'E' that has all the wood trim and grille spotlights, although all GTEs here had a black vinyl roof, high back moulded seats, a mechanical boot release and a thick pinstripe (thin-thick-thin) down the length of each side just below the bodyline), but then I found an Oxford blue 65 MkI GT. She had the chrome on the sides like the Super, a blue interior and a rare optional extra of reversing lights. These were activated by the speedometer and worked if the car was moving backward, which scared a few people at traffic lights if she rolled back a bit! I did 30,000 miles in that car in two years - including a three month period where it was not driven because I had ploughed it into an Oak tree at 50mph (truck pulled out of a side street right in front of me and I swerved and the car just slid uncontrolled on the wet road until impact). She was quite a car, that one, but was never quite the same after they put her back on the road. Loved my time with Cortinas, but they carry quite a heft window ticket nowadays, so I doubt I will own another. All the best - and thanks for a wonderful view of so many 2-door models! We hardly ever saw them here.

I've had them all, but personally I find the Mk1 and Mk3 to be the best looking. The others are really just rather bland squared off three box saloons. If I could buy an equivalent of a Cortina estate right now I'd take it like a shot for it's sheer usefulness; don't say Mondeo estate, because it is too huge to park anywhere. Sadly the world is now full of so-called SUVs that all seem to be vying to have the smallest internal space relative to their exterior size.

My first car was a 1971 Mk3 1600GT with four doors, and a Ziebart rust-proofing job on it which kept it looking smart. I was its 3rd owner when I acquired it in 1978 but I knew the previous 2 who were sensible types. Almost as soon as I got it I was obliged to travel between Glasgow and Southampton on a fairly regular basis, due to work commitments. This job it accomplished in fine style and I was sad when I said good bye when I was transferred back to London in 1980 and it wasn't practical anymore... Couldn't get it out of 3rd gear ;-(

There seems to be a regular miss-description of the 1600e! It is regularly described as either a Mk 1 or Mk2! The position is that it is either a Series 1 or Series 2, because there never was a Mk 1 version, unlike the Cortina GT, for example. I had a 1970 Series 2, which was unfortunately prone to severe corrosion.

My favourite of those featured has to be the Mk 1. I love originality, and that goes for iterations of models, too. Of course, I am also a fan of the characterful Mk III, especially with its coke-bottle styling reminiscent of sports cars penned by Italian carrozzeria. My favourite of the genre, however, is a car not featured here, which will doubtless be as rare as hen's teeth in this country as it is the 1964 17M Ford Taunus. I remember my father used to have one, a white 2-door with a red roof.

Only from the Mk4 (TE) - the German Cologne 2.3 V6 was available in UK & Ireland. There was a couple of specialist outfits, doing bespoke variants like the Savage - which was the 3.0 litre Essex V6 shoehorned into Cortinas from the Mk1 on.

Cortina MK1s had the best heating n ventilation I even had the MK would change All the air inside the car without the fun going at 40MPH in under a minute cause the body of the car was creating depression on the outside air vents by the back pillars It also had Cold face vents ALL the time so when u had Hot air to demist the screen u was No bombarded with Hot air on your face as the face vents where Alway pumping out glorious cold air the heating was also fast aways MK2 was similar MK3 n later hot air on the demister= hot air on your face hated that same with the MK4,

It’s a pity you didn’t get to see any of our cortina’s in Australia The mark 3 was called a tc cortina mark 4 was a td and the last a te and all of them were available with a 4.1lt six cylinder Engine and they were great especially the last one that had a six cylinder and 5 speed manual 👍👍 I am sure we had another one after mark five and it was a tf which had plastic bumpers that included lower valance as well And that maroon make two was my wife’s first car She hated it and I think it is the reason she doesn’t like fords at all

My sister had the Mk3 and in Aus you could get them with the 4.1 litre engine from the larger falcon range, they flew. Power to weight ratio was unreal. Got scary at high speed though!

I owned a 1600E - NOF628F- from 1972 to 1977 but I swear that it was jinxed! Or was it a case of nice car, shame about the driver. Anyway an RTA finished it off, the date was 7/7/77 (not my fault!). Later on, I owned a Mk. 3.
