Not so fun fact: the average lifespan in the middle ages is actually a bad representation. the reason its like this is because of the extremely high child mortality of the time. People regularly lived into thier 70's-80's
@johnnymcblaze2 жыл бұрын
This is wrong-think. The reason life spans are represented this way is because the people need to believe modern medicine is making us into immortals. Sadly we are living shorter lives. The idea that a lot of people died of diseases and bacteria is also misrepresented. There is no evidence this is true as a whole, but under certain circumstances in individual cases this happened. For example: No evidence of bad teeth as a whole. Evidence of good teeth as a whole. For years media ignored this and talked all about the bad teeth "failing" to point out that they were only showing the skulls and teeth of the wealthy - the only ones with bad teeth because of a diet that could afford sugar.

Two other parts of the St Christopher myth that might be worth mentioning: A. Some say he was originally human, but so handsome that wannabe lovers kept distracting him from his holy mission, so he was miraculously transformed into a Cynocephalus to put them off. B: The story where he came from Canaan also has a version where he was captured in a war and taken to Rome as a prisoner, where he became so fascinated by Christianity he volunteered to be converted and return to his homeland as a missionary (he isn't dog-headed in that one, but it's still interesting).

His forehead was narrow and longer on the back and the front leaned back and his mouth snouted forward to the point where you’d think that he did not have a chin. He was, what I'd say dog-headed. What I believe is that some people who descend from a certain group of Turks, mountain people, had dog-heads. here's an extract from the book "The Cathedral" by Huysmans, its a great way to understand the middle age's world view, but I will start first with a quote from Julious Evola because few people realize that most of our modern story telling is actually based on the middle ages!: "The Middle Ages awaited the hero of the Graal and expected that the head of the Holy Roman Empire would become an image and a manifestation of that "King of the World."...The invisible Emperor was to become also the visible one, and the Middle Ages would be "middle" in the sense of "Central"...the invisible, inviolable Center, the sovereign who must reawaken, the same hero, avenging and restoring. These are not fantasies of a dead, romantic past, but, rather, the simple truth for those who, today, alone can legitimately call themselves alive." -Julius Evola, Il mistero del Graal Joris Carl huysman "the cathedral": www.gutenberg.org/files/15067/15067-h/15067-h.htm CHAPTER XVI "The Middle Ages, knowing that everything on earth is a sign and a figure, that the only value of things visible is in so far as they correspond to things invisible-the Middle Ages, when consequently men were not, as we are, the dupes of appearances-made a profound study of this science, and made it the nursing mother and the handmaid of mysticism. Convinced that the only aim that it was incumbent on man to follow, the only end he could really need, was to place himself in direct communication with Heaven, and to out-strip death by merging himself, unifying himself to the utmost, with God... Jesus was "seen" in everything-in the fauna, the flora, the structure of buildings, in every decoration, in the use of colour. Whichever way man could turn, he still saw Him. And at the same time he saw his own soul as in a mirror that reflected it; in certain animals, certain colours, and certain plants he could discern the qualities which it was his duty to acquire, the vices against which he had to defend himself. And he had other examples before his eyes, for the symbolists did not restrict themselves to turning botany, mineralogy, natural history, and other sciences to the uses of a catechism; some of them, and among others Saint Melito, ended by applying the process to the interpretation of every object that came in their way. A cithara was to them the breast of the devout man; the members of the human frame became emblematical: the head was Christ, the hairs were the saints, the nose meant discretion, the nostrils the spirit of faith, the eye contemplation, the mouth symbolized temptation, the saliva was the sweetness of the inner life, the ears figured obedience, the arms the love of Jesus, the hands stood for good works, the knees for the sacrament of penance, the legs for the Apostles, the shoulders for the yoke of Christ, the breast for evangelical doctrine, the belly for avarice, the bowels for the mysterious precepts of the Lord, the body and loins for suggestions of lust, the bones typified hardness of heart, and the marrow compunction, the sinews were evil members of Anti-Christ. And these writers extended this method of interpretation to the commonest objects of daily use, even to tools and vessels within reach of all. Yves de Chartres tells us that priests instructed the people in symbolism, and from the researches of Dom Pitra we know that in the Middle Ages Saint Melito's treatise was popular and known to all. Thus the peasant learnt that his plough was an image of the Cross, that the furrows it made were like the hearts of saints freshly tilled; he knew that sheaves were the fruit of repentance, flour the multitude of the faithful, the granary the Kingdom of Heaven; and it was the same with many pursuits. In short, this method of analogies was a bidding to everybody to watch and pray better. Then came the Renaissance, and symbolism was wrecked at the same time as church architecture. Mysticism in the stricter sense of the word, more fortunate than its handmaidens, survived that period; for it may be safely asserted that, though it was unproductive while living through that period, it flourished anew in Spain, producing its noblest blossoms in Saint John of the Cross and Saint Teresa. Since then doctrinal mysticism seems dried up at the source. Not so, however, as regards personal mysticism, which still dwells acclimatized and flourishing in convents".-

In Southern Estonia, the dog headed men were named koerakoonlased (dog snout-ers in rough translation), or peninuki. They were originally known as folk name for Opritšin (not sure what they are named in English), who were sneaking and snuffing out enemies for Ivan IV on Livonia territory because they were known to have dog symbol on their outfits and horses. Later they become sort of dog headed monsters in mythology. There are some hints that they might have lived here, way in north compared to the rest of southern Europe and thus were sort of cold loving monsters, who could be fearful, but dangerous to Christians. I like their legends, they are one of the few oddities in our mythology that actually have historic proof in literature (as in, they're mentioned, not that there is proof of existance).

I'm not saying that the cynocephali were real. Most likely, based on our current understand of biology and paleontology, they were a myth. However, if they were real, that does ultimately matter, very much. It matters because it means the reason that we believe they were not real are flawed, and such a species would present a need for a complete reexamination of our scientific history and process. Not to mention what it means about the chronicles that do not describe their ultimate end.

These species derives from ancient Canaanites, hence the word canine. They were supposed to had been wiped out in sodom. Look into it.
@BroadwayRonMexico10 ай бұрын
@@multibillionsspent Three major problems with that: 1) Canaanites are depicted extensively in Egyptian art and frescoes, and they were never depicted as dog-headed men in any of them 2) There are still later mentions of Canaanites in the OT after Sodom and Gomorrah's destruction, and they were clearly still around. Even if the Phoenicians weren't Canaanites, they were still around within the lands of the two kingdoms and were the ones the wayward Hebrews during the era of Samuel/Kings got their abominable gods and strange practices from 3) The Latin word canine comes from a proto-Indo-European root ("ḱwṓ"), not from the name of Canaan.

They might exist. There has been a phenomena of a people seeing a cryptid known as "Dogmen" which are essentially just werewolves, but without the human aspect. Recently there has been a huge amount of people coming forth with their experiences. Personally, I think I may have encountered one back in 2008, and years of trying to research what I saw lead me to the discovery of this thing. I believe that Dogmen do exist, though they are more typically described as your typical Hollywood werewolf as opposed to just a man with a canine head. Though, I do remember hearing a woman on the KZbin Series "Dogman Encounters" and she talked about her encounter with something she could only describe as a werewolf, I believe she said she was was walking to her house from her friends house. When one of the yard lights activated, she saw what looked like a man with a wolf's head, and said it was making twitching movements. It noticed her and grunted but never gave chase. I forget which episode it was, but she sounded pretty convincing

Great video as always! I just wanted to mention that the dabate about if the dog headed people could think or reason or if they are men or beast is kinda dumb since humans are not the only animals that can think or have consciousness, great apes, elephants, dolphins, corvids and some other animals are all considered consciouss by scientists. But after all it was in middle ages so they could not know that some other animals were also consciouss
@gaarasama17192 жыл бұрын
Conscious... Do you mean sentient beings?
@zuzananespalova23162 жыл бұрын
@@gaarasama1719 well probably not to a same degree as humans but very close. Some animals like elephants and great apes can recognize themselfs in mirrors so they are self consciouss and are able to think about themselfs in a way similar to humans. But only inteligent animals can do this like corvids apes elephants dolphins etc. But yeah you could say that some animals they are sentient beings and of close degree of inteligence to humans, for example crows are tought to be as inteligent as a seven year old kid. And inteligent animals also have culture if the definition of culture is knowledge passed throught generation. And also you must remeber that humans are also animals so it is not that suprising that we are not the only conscious animals. And also sorry for the grammr
@SuperSongbird212 жыл бұрын
Plus the only way a medieval person would recognise reason/sentience/whatever you want to call it was if the creature in question could speak your language. Given how many non-Europeans were dismissed as less than human because they couldn't (or wouldn't) speak European languages, it makes far too much sense that the debate over the Cynocephali being human or not lasted so long without resolution.

It doesn't work that way for them. They take their dead with them and bury them in the woods. It's said that they are interdenominational beings who travel here via portals. There are many accounts of people seeing beach ball sized orbs bopping around and then they will see or hear a dogman. There's a theory that they come here to hunt. A lot of encounters end with the dogman just abruptly running away from the human after terrorizing him and it's said that they are under strict orders not to kill a human unless it's necessary and when the end times come God will release them and allow them to hunt and kill the remaining people who did not repent

Perhaps these beings were what are now referred to as “dogman”. Back in the ancient world there was a lot of room. These creatures were able to live in communities and lead a more civilised existence. As Homo sapiens took over more of the world the dog people were pushed further and further into the wilderness. They became wild and violent and did not like Homo sapiens. Eventually becoming the dogmen of the current era. Why not? cynocephali, blemmies and others at the time were like Bigfoot or grey aliens now: regular people might believe them or not, intellectuals speculated (aka if they exist would they have a soul/count as humans or as animals etc) priests used them as moral fábles. Stories are useful for the questions they raise even more than for their veracity. Interestingly, Augustine's speculations form the basis of the church's modern position on aliens, if we ever were to meet them.

From what I studied, unless we find another intelligence more or less on our own level to compare, the answer to the question "what is a human?" will be incomplete (and even so it might be only less incomplete). So, in a sense, the presence of cynocephalii in Medieval works was an old way to approach this question.

We Christians that believe the Bible and are versed in the biblically endorsed text of "First Enoch," know the truth. We are taught that there giants as well as other human-animal hybrids. These abominations were created due to a "watcher class" of angels that left their first estate and by Mutual implication took human wives .The offspring of these unions resulted in human hybrids. These were acts of rebellion against God to corrupt his creation. You can go read the First Book of Enoch to explain all of this.
