This video marks: a) The final video before my 18th birthday b) The beginning of a short break I've been uploading consistently for over a year and it has, quite evidently, drained me! I'll be back in the winter with some great ideas and projects lined up. If you just can't stand the thought of not seeing me then my social links are in the description. Lucky you

Funniest thing: wasn't even limited to quiz shows. I have vivid memories of being utterly terrified by a multi-level DVD game for "Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire." Honestly astounding values for a DVD piece. Full CGI (though likely realized through full-motion video files) and it showcased some genuinely freaky imagery.

i remember my parents buying me the blockbuster DVD game when i was like 9... i never watched the show, i didnt even knew the show existed before i got that DVD but it was aweful, if you spent more than 20 seconds on a question it would boot you back to the menu, if you spent more than 5 minutes playing the game, it would boot you back to the menu. i dont think it was worth the xmas wrapping it was wrapped up with.

I actually have been collecting DVD games (mostly ones based on game shows) for a while now. I have no nostalgia for the DVD game, but I’ve always thought it’s such a fascinating genre. Like, they made 6 WWTBAM games for some reason. There was also a DVD game that was based on Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, the actual video game. No I’ve never owned it nor have i seen it be played. A lot of the DVD games were obviously cheap Christmas cash ins, the first Family Fortunes and DOND game being pretty evident of that. But I’m still surprised by how much effort they put into them, especially their later entries. While I haven’t played it, DOND Family Challenge had so much going for it. Not only is it a better experience then the first one, but there’s so much video footage from Noel and returning contestants, special features that don’t mean much but are kinda cute, a compilation of best bits from the show, and Ask the Banker, obviously. DOND too was one of my biggest hyperfixations as a kid for some reason. And even to this day I have no clue why. Was it the money? Was it the boxes? Was it the banker? I have no clue, but I was obsessed with it as a kid, and still am. The first rebooted series with Steven Mulhurn became a daily watch with me and mum. We’d sit down and watch it together, and I never really felt that feeling in years. Plus the online community was far larger than I ever imagined. I never knew back in the day, there was a whole forum dedicated to recapping every episode of the show and also letting people play their own fake games. This silly show about opening boxes and hoping for the best while deciding when to stop meant so much to a lot of people, myself included, and I’m surprised it still has a large online following. Heck, I am in that following now.

I love the top gear dvd game, did you know they made a sequel to that? It's called top gear stunt challenge and its got double the rounds as the first game, but my favourite round is cara-bungee, where you put stuff in the caravan hooked up to a crane by a stretchy rope and the aim is to put enough stuff in there to have it go to the lowest score area without it touching the ground because if it touches the ground it explodes. They also made another caravan blowing up round except its with white vans instead and if your playing multiplayer the other team decides which van Hammond hides in before you blow them up. Sadly they removed the team names of team top gear dog and team other person in the sequel, I guess they couldn't fit it in there with all the other stuff? I remember once I brang top gear stunt challenge to school and the software we had wasnt working well with the transitions between rounds so we just played the white van round over and over again untill lunch it was so much fun. A mythbusters dvd game in the style of the top gear ones would be so fun theres so much more potential for explosive minigame style rounds like the caravan ones. Or they could all just be minigame rounds. Edit: HOLY SHIT THE MYTHBUSTERS GAME EXISTS IM GETTING IT ON EBAY YES

I use to have this 2 disc DVD of Matilda when I was younger, and the 2nd disc has this game where you had to ask a bunch of questions or something like that. At one moment when I got a question wrong, I pressed the skip button by accident and took me to the screen saying that I won. So weirdly enough, I won a quiz by accident

I have a couple DVD games which are rather interesting. The first one is based off the Australian kids show Hi-5. It’s not necessarily interactive though as most of the actual use of the DVD remote is to navigate the menu. The main game is mainly played with the included mats, and the Hi-5 cast members give you instructions on what to do. It’s all newly filmed footage too. The other interesting one I own is based off the Humongous Entertainment game Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo. It’s basically a really condensed version of the original PC game with a lot of things removed, but hey, it’s playable. The same company apparently also released DVD game versions of Freddi Fish and Pajama Sam.

Wow, I was literally just thinking about this recently and tried to burn a copy of "Who Shot Johnny Rock" yesterday. I always thought games on DVD was a genius idea as practically everyone had a way to play them. You wouldn't need to worry about making different versions for different consoles! Of course they aren't the most lucrative for developing games, clearly!

I've always wondered why nobody tried to do an adventure game in the style of Myst using DVDs, it should be perfectly doable within the tech's limitations and pre-rendering a bunch of 3D environments as short looping clips was reasonably cheap by the 2000's.

I have, somewhere in the back of my mind, recollection of one firm or another releasing visual novels as DVD games ages ago. They were probably only for the US market, but it's certainly a marginally more interesting application of the tech than yet another quiz.

Well... this was a surprise. I've been working on a website to talk about DVD games for a couple of years now. I'm unfortunately in the US / Mexico, which means I only have access to like 5% of all the DVD games Britain got. Seriously you got way too many DVD games. It's disturbing. There's actually a LOT more to this platform than you'd expect. You touched on the most common genres in the UK, but did you know some companies actually ported old Laserdisc games to DVD? Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, etc. Others actually attempted to make action games. There's a weird Tomb Raider one that's apparently horrible. And that's without going into the DVD games that came included in movies... there's a few videos by people that touch on those, mostly on Disney stuff, some were well made, while others were not. Some French companies even ported old PC adventure games to DVD Video. How did you record this footage, using a real player or PC playback software? A lot of these games just don't work with PC programs because they require some of the more advanced features that the software doesn't support, and that skit in the Countdown segment felt like it was ending too quickly. Anyway, I'm rambling, I really liked this video and will keep an eye out for future installments.
@jmalmstenАй бұрын
Is it just me, or are the DVD games just bafflingly missing out on the potential of visual novels? I mean, they are light on code, has tons of storage (for the time) and you can splice in some full motion video of, well, dvd quality. I guess, the progress between discs for really big sprawling games could be tricky, but I'm sure a solution could be gotten out of the tech available.
