Note 1): Alan Wake 2 physical edition has since been announced for all the physical media enjoyers out there; Note 2): Some people have rightly pointed out that the graphic I show on screen when mentioning FFIV’s free trial gives the impression I’m saying it’s got a time limit. That’s not what I meant to convey at all and will make a point to better match graphics with what I’m saying in the future. The point being made there is that free trials could get more restrictive over time by any means, whether that be time, content, abilities, etc; FFIV is meant to be the reference point, not the target of that particular criticism. When that part comes up just close your eyes and listen to my soothing succulent voice instead lol. Will do better next time 🤙🏻

This is why I always tell people to just buy a physical copy, if you know you are going to watch a movie or play a game over and over just drop the money for the physical. There is no sense in spending hundreds on multiple streaming services when you really only watch 2-3 series all year.

Problem is? The studios that make/made these movies do not care about your ability to watch a 10, 20, or 30 year old movie. This fact, like it or not, extends to the Streaming Services. The moment a show or movie fails to meet a certain criteria (number of views per say) they will remove it. They are not about what you want. They are about $$$ and that is it. If SpaceBalls is not getting as many views as Scary Movie then SB gets removed and Scary Movie 2 gets added. As for Physical Copies. DvDs and Blu-Rays are going the way of the Dodo.

Point of my post is if you own the physical media (with the exception of games nowadays), it’s not going anywhere. All of my old CDs, cassettes, dvds, physical games, and blu-rays still play. My father owned a video store from the mid 80s up until '95. When he had started, he toyed with the idea of a local video delivery service. He told me, in the end he never got to do it that way due to his application for governmental funding was denied. He said the guy who was checking his application said to him „What? That’s how you want to do it? Then there is basically no work for you to do.“ and then denied the funding. He could have been one of the first to start a Netflix kind of business. I still remember finding his first attempts to create a catalogue for the movie. He started drafting with one of those old self adhesive photoalbums in which he had arranged clippings from magazines and other print catalogues. I guess he planned to write a description for each movie with a typewriter or needle printer and then photocopy the pages to turn them into something he could send to his club members. These were the days before desktop publishing was widespread. He had some good ideas back in the day but lacked the funds and manpower to pull it off. Pretty sad in retrospect.

Game Companies as well as streaming services now spend an unhealthy amount of time trying to swindle consumers in a market where purchasing power has gone down and trust is falling. Only a few Triple A games turn a profit and the industry is shrinking. It's a complete death spiral. We're witnessing the erosion of quality for newer releases as development time that could have gone to delivering a better product is now spent chopping up games or inserting new ways to charge you money.

@Whalewraith those are 2 different subjects. Videogames and houses. But since you want to talk about homes, it all depends on where you own the home. For example, I own my main property here in a state, which I do have to pay property taxes every year (as we all do). But I also own a home in Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth territory of the US, and that home has been paid off for 20 years now, and you do not pay property taxes ever as long as you don't rent that property or make money off of it. So we own the property in Puerto Rico and we don't pay any taxes for the past 20 years and the mortgage is paid off as well... So yeah, it all depends.

I doubt it. I think what's going to happen is that most of the streaming services will shut down and the various TV, movie and music will be consolidated with a smaller number of streaming services and the access will be good enough that normies will just accept that as a bill to pay the way they did cable. When my parents got cable in the mid-80s, it was roughly $5 a month for 30 or so channels and even as the cost has crept up over the years, there's still a relatively similar number of channels worth watching.

To simplify the video, when you "purchase" you're actually renting for that time, it's available until it gets pulled from the digital store front. So let's change the wording from "BUY" to RENT.
@SmallSpoonBrigade

That's why I only buy physical media that I can backup or digital downloads that are either DRM free or having DRM that I can strip so that I can make my own backups. I generally prefer to rip all my optical media to disc and then convert it into a form that's more readily streamed across the network to my TV. It's like streaming services, but it's completely stocked with stuff I actually like and without the incentive to keep me trapped looking for stuff to find. Jellyfin even has a randomized order available so that if I'm feeling really overwhelmed by choice, I can just watch one of the first items in the list and it tells me when I'm going to be finished watching.

The bigger issue is that they probably couldn't do that for anything they don't own. So, that could happen with their first party titles, in practice, even that would be dodgy as there's usually lenders involved in those bankruptcies that would be allowed to block it. Even a company just having physical possession of your property doesn't guarantee that you'll get it back. I remember being screwed out of some money that I had paid taxes on when a company went under. It was my money, I had paid taxes on it, but it would have involved having to hire an attorney to draft a letter to the bankruptcy court in order to get the funds possibly released and since I hadn't actually done any work to get the money in the first place, I just ignored it. It was some royalties that I earned from buying some preorder items and I'd already gotten enough money back to completely cover that.

6:01 In the US, you're covered under the First Sale Doctrine for physical purchases. You cannot copy and resell, but you can resell the original product or do whatever you see fit for profit. Not the case with digital. There are currently no protection under US law for digital products of any kind. The companies can pretty much do whatever they want with your purchases at any time and leave you with no legal recourse. However, some online storefronts like Amazon are working with publishers to skirt this protection and do not allow you to list games on their storefront without registering as a "distributor". I'm surprised no one else has talked more about this issue lately.

Laws should change to call these online "purchases" as "rental". As it is, by fact, not a purchase. Also, if even half your prediction becomes true (so far my prediction of ragingly greedy gaming companies is becoming real), I think I'll drop gaming as a whole. I already dropped AAA, blacklisted most of such publishers and with last 6 months, got burnt from Early access games that get abandoned/closed by their own publishers soon after buying. I'm just playing older games. If they take those away, I'll just move to a completely different hobby as a whole.

On the really nice plus side, most digital music storefronts sell DRM free MP3s. That means you don't need to keep them in their digital lockers. You can download them and play them in non-proprietary players. This doesn't mean streaming services like Spotify, Amazon music unlimited, and/or Apple Music.

I’m an Elvis fan and over the years all of his albums have been rereleased over and over. Sometimes newly remastered, sometimes even newly mixed. When I put on a cd, I know what version I’m listening to. Not on Spotify though. Recently Sony released the Elvis Memphis boxset with all his Memphis recordings undubbed. Spotify doesn’t even title them as such. So people can listen to In The Ghetto, not knowing they’re listening to a weird version. Same goes for less famous artists and bands from the past: they often have re-recorded their hits. Spotify doesn’t show that in the titles. So not owning physical media and just rely on digital streaming/loaning/rentals….. the problems are beyond just games and videos. Biggest problem: the majority of the people don’t realize, understand or bother

4:32 - This actually got disputed and taken to the high court in Australia in 2017(?), as the ACCC were claiming that the PS Store were "selling" digital goods but using TOS to bypass ownership/consumer protection laws (in Oz, TOS cannot be used to bypass consumer rights). Since then, digital goods sold in Australia (even if the seller is a foreign entity) are protected by the same consumer protection laws as physical goods. 5:47 - 'Distribute for non-commercial purposes' means you're not going to rip and sell copies of it or sell tickets to watch it like a cinema. Selling off games/movies you bought is well within your legal rights, as one of the rights of ownership is the right to forfeit said ownership for any reason, including for monetary compensation. This was supported in the US with Nintendo vs Blockbuster when it was ruled that, since Blockbuster had legally purchased their games, it was within their ownership rights to lend their copies out for money. Also, you own that DVD, just not the IP on it, so no, Universal does not have the theoretical right to come in and take your copy of Jurassic Park. 14:47 - 'I could tell you to avoid digital media like the plague'.... Too late, I've been doing that since digital distribution was popularised with the PS3 era, as even then it was obvious how toxic digital distribution was.

Thanks for the video on this topic. I've also seen this trend emerging over the years, and I'm disappointed that our government has been negligent on addressing this new space of consumer protections. In fairness, keeping hardware (and the people who support it) online for older games can be an unnecessary expense. The idea of temporary availability can work IF the consumer is made aware of it at the time of purchase. For example, clearly stating the minimum supported service end date. That way, players can make a judgment call on whether they want to spend their money on a game. Additionally, there could be business models that revolve around support for older games that the original publisher no longer supports. The player still wouldn't own anything, but they wouldn't lose access to it. What's needed most right now, though, is proper legislation that protects the consumers from devious and dishonest business practices that essentially rob consumers of their purchases. Edit: we really need to be thinking about digitally downloaded and online games as services, rather than products. The nature of many games these days really does fit a service model more than a product one.

Good timing of this video, ironically in my recommended list. I'm going back to physical media for media I want to actually keep. Sadly I can't do anything about PC or PS5 games, with PS5 physical games still needing a download, but for movies and books I am. The price of the convenience of digital is just too high, IMO. At least if say the power and/or internet goes out, I can read a physical book, or watch a Blu-ray of a movie (if power remains on), and it'll always be there waiting for me.

The annoying thing is that Netflix and amazon and co strips out the English audio and forces dubbed German audio it sounds awful. They even remove the english subtitles due to rights holders. When we buy a PC we have to pay 10 euro to GIMA , they control all media rights and copywrite in Germany its a huge scam.

I believe it's important to distinguish between two types of digital media: traditional digital media streamed over the internet, and in-house digital media. While I enjoy owning physical copies, I dislike the clutter they create. Instead, I prefer to rip or torrent movies and TV series, adding them to my media server, which streams content to various devices throughout my home. I find this approach far more convenient than dealing with physical discs, which not only take up space but can also deteriorate over time. Rather than eliminating physical media altogether, perhaps the solution is to evolve it into a more convenient and durable format.

I don’t think subscription models will work in the long-term. Most of these large companies are more concerned about constant growth than maintaining a steady stream of content/services in line with a set number of subscribers; companies setting unrealistic growth expectations leads to Amazon Prime getting ads or Disney+’s price getting ridiculously jacked up. Plus there’s soon gonna be too many subscription services for people to keep up with/care about, just like with “live-service” games. These subscription services will probably continue to grow for a while and then hard crash after that before we return to the way things were with some proper ownership. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go continue reading Dune before Frank Herbert rolls out of his grave to pry the book away from me.

The steaming service model is unsustainable. You only charge $15 a month for a service. Even if every person in the planet paid that for a subscription service, it won't cover the running costs of the streamer (getting distribution rights, paying to create original content etc). TV survived because it had companies pay it through advertising. Companies have deep pockets and a sustainable budget, so can afford to spend millions a year on advertising. Regular Joe doesn't have deep enough pockets to keep paying for streaming services if they keep raising the price.
