Well... The crescent moon and star are more Turkic than Islamic, but Ottomans were pretty much the most powerful among the Islamic world which caused the West to associate this symbol with Islam. Also, consider Ottomans had just laid siege to Vienna.

That image of multiple suns was more than likely very accurate. The phenomena is called parhelia or better known as sundogs. It's an optical illusion where the light from an object gets reflected in the ice crystals in the clouds sometimes causing a reflection or multiple reflections of an image. That painting is very accurate because not only shows the reflected suns being upside down but also shows the large halo around the image that can also be often seen when witnessing this phenomena.

Atmospheric comets, those inside our atmosphere ARE terrifying and the quote is that even brave warriors voided their bowels when they saw the serpent/comet. The mother of all comets, Typhon, has stories about it around the world. It was a catastrophic comet impact and thus the ancients were justified in their terror of comets. Never underestimate the intelligence of the ancients.

Here's the thing though, a lot of that type of art is rooted in post-modernist philosophy, which definitely wasn't a thing back when these illustrations were made. Some of the weirder art of these periods have more to do with stuff like an overly litteral metaphors that have since been forgotten, or an artist only having 2nd or 3rd hand information and needing to work with what they knew vs whatever they had heard about(and maybe even language barriers getting criss-crossed with an error or two) There's also the possibility of artists drawing their own vivid nightmares, as was the case with Horodimus Boche(spelling?).

🇬🇧 Very interesting! Its rather fun to interpret the ancient cultures written & pictorial images which they tried to represent as faithfully as they could, even though much of what they recorded was incomprehensible to them. However we can see exactly what they had witnessed by our current level of understanding & advances in science & astronomy. But its thanks to these books of "Miracles" we can decipher what they couldnt. Ive read other books rescued from very old monasteries or libraries that tell of some mighty strange occurrences! Esp things seen in the skies & some very peculiar crafts hovering over cities & countryside & seas. An endless catalogue of sometimes unexplanable events & sightings we are still puzzled by. One of my favourite events which Happened somewhere in Europe in the 15th or 16th c and was witnessed by a crowd of people & it was a ship, like a Schooner or a tall masted ship way up in the sky & moving as if tossing about in the waves of a sea. Even the Anchor dangling on a long heavy chain from the sky ship over the side & being pulled along through the air, a 100 or more feet below the ship!! All marvelled at this sight & then the sailors onboard the ship looked over the side & pointed in alarm at the people below shouting & waving up at them!! I wonder what the sailors saw? A world with living people below the ocean depths? was it a parallel world? Or another dimention? Or a time when the sea levels were at the hight of the ship? Facinating! Thanks for the vid Peace 🇬🇧👧
