In week 6 of the 1985 NFL season, the New England Patriots were trailing 3-0 at halftime to the Buffalo Bills, with the offense in complete disarray, and with starting quarterback Tony Eason having gotten injured and replaced by the veteran backup, Steve Grogan. With their season on the line, Patriots head coach Raymond Berry decided to do something bold during the halftime break that no one, not even Grogan himself, saw coming. And the result saved their season. This is the breakdown of some of the best coaching and halftime adjustments in Patriots history that you might not know about

1985 Patriots/Dolphins: • The GUTSIEST Play Call...

I’m glad you brought this to attention. I’ve been telling this story for years. The ‘85 Patriots were a great football team, but they didn’t hit their stride until Grogan took over the role of starting QB/offensive coordinator. Having gone 6-1 in the 7gms in which he played, Grogan suffered a broken leg, yet continued calling plays for starting QB Tony Eason. This made the patriots team to be reckoned with and led them to the playoffs, where they beat somme damn good teams on the way to an AFC Championship

Grogan was from another era where QB's were used to calling there own plays. They started going away from the QB doing that in the '80's.

I don't think Lombardi, Ditka, or Walsh let their QB's call their own plays from the start.
@bigD5172
@bigD5172 Жыл бұрын
@@andrewpestotnik5495 McMahon would audible quite a bit as he had acrimony with Ditka quite a bit. The game where Drew Bledsoe had 70 attempts against the Vikings in the '90's, it was his playbook to turn that game around as Parcells gave him full autonomy. Lombardi only had 18 to 21 plays in his playbook & Walsh scripted the 1st 15 to 25 plays of the game for his offense.

If nothing else, this proves why having a solid veteran backup who may not know/be able to execute every play, but at least the plays he likes and is most comfortable with.

I was at this game. Grogan single handedly turned the game and the season around. The players and fans had no faith in Tony Eason. Grogan's leadership, ability, and guts were phenominal! After winning this game, with Grogan at the helm, the Pats won an additional 5 games in a row. Grogan was voted team MVP in 1985. Unfortunatly he suffered a season endng broken leg against the Jets in week 12 .

Those bears gave up 10 points total in the postseason. 3 of them because Walter Fumbled in their own territory and the other 7 came after the Bear were already up 44-3. Perhaps the most dominant defense of all time.

Grogan is proof that you had better have a capable backup QB because if your starting QB goes down, you can't let your team go down with him. Grogan helped save the Pats' season and they definitely wouldn't have made the Super Bowl without him.

Grogan reminds me of Carl Yastrzemski. When Jim Rice was injured in 1975, the Red Sox coaches asked Yastrzemski (then age 36 and with a bad left shoulder) if he could go back to left field. He said, "Ha! I can play left field in my sleep!" Yastrzemski played like a maniac and drove the Red Sox into the World Series.
