I have three editions of the game "NFL Strategy." Using cards for offensive and defensive plays, and a randomizer, you had simulated game play. Each game came with a playbook that explained the plays, with a note from the coach about each play. For the Flea Flicker, the note says, "Pray someone on the defense gets hypnotized."

Yea, I wasn't alive yet when the 1985 Pats went on their unexpected run, but from just watching videos about them, yea, they were the definition of a Cinderella team. Let's face it, Super Bowl XX was supposed to be Bears vs. Dolphins, the team that gave one of the greatest teams of all time their lone loss on MNF. But instead, the Pats beat the Jets in Jersey 26-14, outlasted the Raiders in LA 27-20, and then beat the Dolphins in Miami, and not only beat them, they blew them out 31-14. And it was only the Pats 1st win in Miami since the Dolphins 1st season in 1966. No wonder the Pats have historically struggled in Miami. And going in, yea, the Pats were just happy to be there. Da Bears are who we thought they were, and they just flat out dominated. At least the Pats could say that they had a lead and were the only team to score a TD on that vaunted defense in the playoffs.

@@adamgordon6435 The Bears had alot of solid teams in the 1980's, it wasn't just in '85. Problem was, the NFC was so dominant back then. At one point, the NFC won 13 straight Super Bowls. CHI had to deal with teams like the Giants, Redskins and 49ers. If not for those 3, they probably would have gotten a few more Lombardis, but they were One Hit Wonders. What could have been.

The Pats just didn't match up well against the Bears, who were one of the greatest teams of all time, with arguably the greatest defense of all time. The Pats were a Wild Card team who sneaked into the Playoffs as the 5 seed, and went into hostile territory 3 straight weeks, and won 3 road games to claim the AFC Crown. Meanwhile, the Bears posted back to back blowout shutouts against the Giants and Rams at home to claim the NFC, and then dominated the Pats in Nawlins to win their lone Lombardi.

They actually only won once in Miami in 1985. The Dolphins beat them there in a Monday night thriller in December when Tony Eason was intercepted on the final drive. Fascinating games between those two teams that season.

That was one of the few home games that weren't blacked out during that season. Not only did the fleaflicker save their season but it was one of the best moments of what was a fun year. It's too bad that they couldn't pull off an upset of the Bears in the Super Bowl but that wasn't going to happen. Thankfully years later later the Pats would pull off their Super Bowl upset against the Rams. That still feels like yesterday.

Heading into the '85 AFC Championship Game, the Patriots were on an 18 game losing streak in the Orange Bowl, but upset the overconfident Dolphins by forcing 6 turnovers and stomping them on their way to 255 rushing yards.

The Pats actually beat the Dolphins in Miami during their inaugural season in 1966. But other than that, that was a great upset and shut everyone up that was saying that it was gonna be a Bears/Dolphins Super Bowl.

Brady had one of his sloppiest games ever, as he threw 4 INT's, but the Pats still had an 11 pt. lead with 4 mins. left. But after some boneheaded miscues, they ended up losing by 1. At least they would end up winning it all in the end, so it was just a minor bump. But yea, even during the Brady/Belichick Era, they were 8-10 in Miami. It's a pain in the ass to play there as the road team.

For sure, in 1985 the AFC East & West were really competitive, while the AFC Central was pretty hapless, and those 1985 Broncos are on most lists of best teams not to make the playoffs. Ha ha, yeah, the Dolphins defense was hot garbage in 1985, and it only became worse in subsequent seasons (until the "Miami Pound Machine" Miami D of 1990; they had the rhythm that season). Definitely a gutsy call, and better than spiking the ball for sure. Steve Grogan was a pretty good runner who also accumulated a lot of rushing TD's, and held the single-season record in that category for 35 years (I think Official JaguarGator9 may've already touched upon that. Gro-Gannnn!).

Belichick's '03 call for a deliberate safety in Denver by snapping a punt off the goal post with the Patriots already behind late had to at least tie this play. The Pats ended up with the top seed in the AFC by 1 game over KC that year.

If this advice ever finds its way to an NFL coach and they use it, they are going to seem like a genius. This is going to sound silly until you actually give it some thought... but the most misused and underutilized play in NFL history is the flea flicker. The conventional thinking of the flea flicker is all wrong, and the Joe Theismann injury really soured its reputation. The flea flicker is used as a Trick play with a capital t, and put in the same category as double-reverses, hook & ladder, halfback options, and it is used to try to fool defenses into a major blown coverage and set up a home-run long bomb throw. But obviously NFL defenses are highly intelligent and basically never fall for it, and best case you just get a regular one-on-one and the receiver makes the grab. The way the flea flicker should be used is as a minor "trick" play in the same category as draws, rpo, and screen passes. Think about it: the flea flicker is the opposite of a draw play! The draw play fakes a pass and then switches to a run halfway through. The flea flicker fakes a run and then switches to a pass halfway through. Therefore the flea flicker should be used about the same frequency as a draw play, maybe about 2 to 4 times per game. And the flea flicker should be used for the same goal as a draw play, not to hit a 50-yard touchdown, but to pick up an easier 5 or 10 yards. Like a trap block or a screen pass the flea flicker uses the defense's aggression against it, and makes the defense have to second-guess before they commit full force to defend one line of attack. And the funniest part of this video is the intro line: "Imagine calling a flea flicker on 4th and inches" hahahahahaha holy fuck, imagine how absolutely perfect of a call it is to call a fake run in a situation where the defense has to decide in a split second to sell out against the run or not!!! Jesus fucking christ, what is actually "hard to imagine" is why the hell it's not done on a regular basis! Why in the world has an NFL coach never called a flea flicker on the goal line?! That's the perfect place for the call because again the defense has to instantly sell out on the run to have any chance to stop it. And yet no coach has ever done it. And the "analytics" can't tell them it's a good idea... because there are no stats on it, because no one has ever done it. The closest thing is that in college they now sometimes run a dumb play where the quarterback runs the ball up to the line as if he's running a keeper play, and then at the last second stops behind the line of scrimmage and throws the ball to a receiver. It sometimes works, but it is a lot for a quarterback to do, and instead of making the defense make the split second decision, it forces the quarterback to make the quick decision while he's up nuts to butts with the line of scrimmage and maybe has a defensive tackle in his face. It is a shitty version of a flea flicker, whereas a simple traditional flea flicker pitch back to the QB would cause a tight end or a fullback or even a lineman-eligible receiver to be wide the fuck open often. And especially the first few times that the first Coach surprises everyone with the play.

10 43 Did you say Raiders? At first I thought you said Rams and now I can't really tell. But yeah, Denver screwed themselves that season with that 11-5 record because they failed to beat said Raiders either time. The second one pretty much came down to the fact their punter Chris Norman, was more worthless than tits on a nun that season. Specifically, his wet fart of a punt into the wind at home during overtime set up the Raiders to make short work en route to a GWFG. They tried to make Barney Chavous (pronounced SHAY-vus) the fall guy, as when asked which end zone to defend after the coin toss, he admittedly chose...poorly. But he wasn't to blame for relying on Chris Norman as their punter. Seriously, he was so bad that the emergence of Mike Horan felt like the second coming of Ray Guy. Anyway, might make a good story for a future video.
