Electricity is all around us. We plug into it for almost everything we do. Yet we probably don't give much thought to the people who made it possible. While Thomas Edison may be known as the man who invented the light bulb, it can be argued that Nikola Tesla is the one who turned it on.
Before the booming tech revolution of Silicon Valley, Tesla was one of the original tech superstars, and we owe much of our modern world today to his incredible brain. Scientists and engineers all over the world are still bringing Tesla's inventions to life today.
So how did a man who should have been a billionaire, indelibly inked into history, end up dying penniless and forgotten?

I'd say the advent of the car company has widened awareness of him, however I suspect whereas Einstein has almost always been known for doing something groundbreaking with physics that broke Newton, until the last decade or so Tesla's name was barely known outside of nerd culture, and not that widely known within.

@@relwalretep it probably depends on where / when you grew up, as well as your profession. I for one, and most of the people that have surrounded me throughout my life, have always known who Tesla is and what his contribution was to society. A photographic and encyclopedic mind, a unique combination that probably contributed to his eccentricities. It seems he was completely altruistic and cared not for money or fame, only caring about the science. His name is immortalized in several ways mostly in the Tesla car company. What a mind!

A note to all those who are “criticizing” the headline and assertion that Tesla is “forgotten”: it’s actually a fair and accurate statement in the sense that Tesla was world-known for his time. At the height of his public fame, he was well-known and as heavily praised as he was fiercely criticized. His war with Edison was a sensation. And YET for many, many decades Tesla was a complete unknown as his name and attribution for his contributions to science and technology faded. In fact, when I first read abut Tesla in the 80’s, stories were framed in the “Inventors You’ve Never Heard Of” and “Forgotten Geniuses” genre. Tesla was often portrayed as a something just short of a “mad scientist” and a kook. The Book of Lists was one of the first alt-history tomes to really take Tesla seriously. So while Tesla’s name has been reclaimed and it’s used far and wide today (as the video clearly points out at the end, for those who haven’t actually watched it), the MAN behind the name on the cars and the MRI machines is far, far from the heights of a time when many more millions of people knew the name Nicholas Tesla, not merely the products and brands who bear it.

Yep! He can't ever be forgotten. There's an official Tesla measurement unity. The "issue" is that because he wasn't "easy to sell" as a personality in terms publicity, some of his best work is often relegated into a secondary role... Always lurking and often not credited for, just like his real life. If he was just a really greedy man, all he needed to become one of the richest men to have ever existed was to develop AC and Tesla Coils!... but fortunately for us all, he didn't stop, he wasn't greedy and he wanted more for everyone! One of the greatest ever!

Tesla gave his inventions that we are still trying to replicate or improve on to this day. The man invented wi-fi and electric cars in his day, only to be shut-down by the greed of companies with the same dirty stench as the Phoebus Cartel. Edison was also widely known to partake in the silencing of Tesla. Tesla was the symbol of pure talent and ingenuity could have propelled his time probably past our current tech, but is another example of how the 1% really decide everything for us. Whether it be silencing geniuses like Tesla, Galileo, or Copernicus, they are always there to get what they want at humanity’s expense.

Was Niagara Falls really the world’s first hydroelectric power plant? Seems unlikely. Telluride, CO was powered by a nearby hydroelectric plant, designed by Nicola Tesla, and they claim to be the first AC hydro plant. Surely there were DC hydros before that. Also, I read a biography many years ago, and it said, IIRC, Tesla used 17 napkins, not 18, partly because 17 is a prime number.

Mistakes in this video: -Tesla isn't the greatest man in electricity history, those are Faraday and Maxwell. -He had nothing to do with light bulbs, invented in 1879, while Tesla was still in his home country. -Several companies are shown named Tesla, but the physics unit for magnetic flux density that bears his name since 1960 isn't. -Tesla didn't invent alternating current, but Hippolyte Pixii, 1832. First applied by Guillaume Duchenne in 1855, and several other people and companies ever since. -Tesla didn't win the War of the Currents, but Westinghouse, his boss. Tesla was *one* of his employees. And other people later improved on his designs. -Tesla never spoke about "free wireless energy," but about saving money eliminating the wires. His idea can't work, because of physics. He was an inventor, not a physicist. Like, he didn't believe in the existence of electrons. -Maybe the British believe that in s.XIX America you needed to be a showman if you were an inventor, but the long list of other inventors that worked at the time creating the modern world we live in didn't do that. Showmanship isn't a proof of genius, not then, not now. -Death rays and other of his ideas cannot work because of physics. He never really described how that worked and the info left is unworkable. Proof? No army ever used it. -Presenting the signs of Tesla's mental instability as proof of genius perpetuates the myth of the "mad genius" and it's an injustice to all the regular people who did and do contribute to science and tech not being mentally troubled. That was the reason he fell into poverty. Not only he wasn't a businessman, he didn't invent many things that work, and at last he was only fantasizing. -Attributing to Tesla the invention of things that other people invented based on his dreams, is like attributing to Gene Roddenberry the authorship of anything invented that looks alike or was inspired by a Star Trek prop. -He didn't quite died penniless. He used to live in expensive hotels, move, and leave behind the unpaid bill. Around 1934 his former boss Westinghouse provided a pension of sorts for Tesla, and that was his income for his remainder years. -And, he never was a "forgotten genius." He got many awards in his lifetime. He has been always well regarded and duly remembered as one of the many that contributed to electric tech development, in history books that no one reads. The origin of the Tesla myth is an 80s TV show, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, aired in 1983, hosted by Jack Palance. A variety TV show, still deluding people, including the mighty BBC. Great job! Good work!

I know right! This video is riddled with provable errors, it's astounding to think such a huge network such as the "BBC" would create such an segment; it is filled with errors, exaggerations and myths. Tesla was a brilliant, eminent individual who had made his mark in the world, and should be presented as such. However, this video completely glosses over them and pretends they don't exist. "Wardenclyffe Tower" was based off faulty premises in regards to the Physics and was doomed to fail. Tesla's Physics in many cases was demonstrably awful, he didn't even believe that there were "Electromagnetic waves" or that Hertz's experiments actually were true and he sent Electromagnetic waves from to and fro. Tesla was brilliant engineer, however he contributed very little to the science of the time.

That final sound bite: it says success is not wealth. Or notoriety, or happiness, or invention. But contribution to your fellow man. Tesla isn't beloved because he invented useless things for profit. He is beloved because he invented useful things. New things =/= progress, no matter how intriguing. It only matters of those things are useful, even if they may seem like a technological step backwards. And, in fact, I believe all technologies that do not add usefulness to our lives, cultures, societies... Demonstrable net positive utility & joy... Should be excised from our lives & societies.

Tesla did not invent AC transmission, nor did he invent the transformer. Tesla did not invent the induction coil. Single phase AC power was being used more in Europe by many inventors in the early 1880s. As early as the late 1870's Germany had developed a crude 2 phase AC generator. Mikhail Dolivo-Dobrovolsky built the first full 3 phase AC generation and distribution system in the 1888-1891 period. Tesla to his credit was able to inspire Westinghouse to jump into AC, but very quickly Tesla's two-phase system was made obsolete by three phase systems which could more efficiently send power farther.

He is not forgotten... just some textbooks hide his awesome works. and it is not taught in some of the schools. some greedy wealthy man claims his works and claimed that it is their invention... But I believe God knows what he do and maybe he is already rewarded in God's place in heaven. Many people still Idolized his Knowledge including me and my partner and other Engineers, and other people who knows him. my partner told about sir Tesla to me...He shares a story about how amazing Is Sir Tesla was and his inventions... also his other fellow co-workers know his contributions. also sir tesla broke one of his inventions because he is a Good person even though he is less in wealth .. he still think for the sake of the future generation ... for the sake of humanity... I also amazed to him and others like him that written in some Science / physic books ... or in some publications... especially those practioner who help in the Medical Field Many Inventors are so amazing they have an amazing knowledge it is really came from God and his guidance... or maybe it can be some knowledge from their ancestors written in the ancient books. I respect many of them even some I don't even know their names cause I am not in their time and I only have limited resources. I like them and really amaze too them for making many awesome contribution in our today's society... I respect them. especially the chemist... their Job is very hard from studying to application it's hard and dangerous to be a chemist ... Thanks to them to their knowledge, sacrifices, because now we now what chemical is dangerous and what is not... I love them ... I am also amazed to them both Mrs. Currie and Sir Pierre Currie for giving us many knowledge about dangerous chemicals like mercury and Radiation, Lead but is also sad because of their dangerous work she got injured and it cause to her death... being scientist is No joke also the Jobs of the astronauts it is hard to become an astronauts. their also risking their lives just to Give us info about the outer space. and many others. Hope their exploration will become successful most of the time cause they also have a family waiting for them to come home... and also the war that's happening I can't help myself but to be angry at some Greedy War Freak leaders who Didn't think about the future of other innocent people... all they want is to war ... Do they even think what will be the consequences of their wrong doings? also the crime it is too sickening to always hear about something like that... It makes me sad to see crimes that bad people do to others.. hope the war and other crimes will decreases... I know many of us also wants a Peaceful and Happy life... Me I want something like that to experience... I want to be happy and not be depressed most of the time... tbh... I often experience that.. hope the war will really stop.. I also pray that... hope leaders will also think about that... think about their younger generations who will not experience how to be happy within sometimes their own family thats why me as a youth and I think Others as well ... Also thinking, dreaming , and praying to have A Happy Family someday that we are not experiencing when I was a child... luckily I have a Good younger siblings that can make some Good Humurous Jokes and also lucky to meet and have some awesome Good friends that also a Joker that can also makes me smile... I am thankful for that forever ^_^ even we don't have anything in life ... God let me meet some Good people that I can also see as a Family also. hope and pray for the war all over the other places that I didn't know to stop soldiers and police also has their own family waiting for them... I hate sad life endings... like seems what happens to me... but how I hope, wish and pray... that theres still another chance here where I can still be happy... even thou it is so hard, even thou it is so depressing most of the time... I want to make my own family happy... I want to build my own happy family... Hope me and my partner and other friends or family members will cope with depression.. also healing prayers for other depress people like me that I didn't know... God is Real... Angel's / Higher beings are real ^_^ I've luckily have seen there before believe it or not... they are real also hear their voice but most of the time I didn't see them... maybe they just want to remind me.. That hey! you are not alone... I can also here some advices sometimes from good spirits that I didn't see ... when I am in the merge of totally Giving up... because of too much depression, too much , negative hurtful things that I've heard, the bad things , bad people that I've also encountered... I am really in the merge of giving Up... It is too long to explain... I just also relate some of my hurtful emotions to some songs that I've heard... I also listening to some songs that have a very beautiful meaning yet sometimes it sounded to negative or painful but I can also feel their emotions there... I can really relate... Since I have anything to do even though I am also experiencing to much pain!!! Still I don't want to take revenge cause it's a bad thing... I just trust God like others say let God do the revenge... God can see all of Us... sometimes I just singing some of the songs that I can relate to... especially when I feel pissed of to unwanted life circumstances or other bad mouthed people... those who say abusive words, do bad things ..I have so much trauma because of them. I hate them for being like that. anyways I just want to stop my negative sharing... it's enough I just also want to move forward whatever it takes... I can't say I still love my life , but I love the people around me especially my Partner, my siblings , My family... it's hurt me for now I can't do anything for them beacause of my depressed self., because of my fears but I really want to change my mind... how to deal with my problem.. but like others I am emotional and weak... I also try to tell myself that "stop crying" but to weak and helpless with that thing... also I am thankful there are still some that helping me... praying for me to be ok mentally... it's really a Big help ^_^ and also I am very thankful to some beautiful musics that I am luckily listening and hearing sometimes YT recommended it to me ^_^ it really helps me to lighten up my mood or Emotion... makes me continue my Dream somehow? I search or choose also a beautiful song thanks God... and Thanks to Other Great Musician / Artist ... It is available! honestly, I don't want to be like this always get depressed and easily get pissed off due to my traumas to others... hope can also cope up with my traumas... what I am thinking so I can still hold on ... aside from lovedone's is thinking about how' Cute will be my future son or daughter will be like... btw ... I also experience having stillbirth other reason of my depression before its very painful also and depressing... I know how it feels like... I also don't want to talk about this because it will just only makes me cry... although I know my daughter is ok now with God ... our misfortunes are really depressing... She is so cute ^_^ sadly it just a short time to see her... but I believe she will be back in the right time ... we have a clue she will come back as a boy... thats give me a little hope... God knows how much I love her... and his father even though we dont have a perfect relationship... I often get pissed off to him he also... but damn! I still love him... and want him still to become a dad to our son and daughter... I want a relationship that will last like other couple has... even though there are so many ups and downs sometimes and seems really hard.... I still want to try... because I also know maybe I can't.. and I know I will not also be happy being with other... and I dont want to so I also try my best... even if I know its not always the best to be right maybe not all the time... but I want our relationship to be happy and okay... maybe not all the time we are happy.. there is also a time that I want to break up with him... because of my negative thoughts... We r not perfect, Me too I also do some stupid , annoying decisions sometimes... but we can't still both not ready being in part ways... I want to make him happy even thou we both experiencing depressions and traumas... together we will heal... I will still try... how I wish same for some of my friends and other people that I didn't know.. I also wishing for their heart healings .. they will also cope up with their depression... me too.... I want to experience a happy life having a kids with him I will believe to God and to other Good psychic that I've met online that said... my baby's soul will come back because she love us...^_^ he will reincarnated as a boy and reincarnated as my child again... just need to be okay first... so I will take care both of them... my partner and my baby hope I will be okay... Me with myself I can't do this alone... thats why we Really need God... Nikola Tesla is nowhere near forgotten. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz is more of a forgotten genius. He was Isaac Newtons rival.

That’s more like it. I never heard of Leibniz until I started reading pop science books from the shelves of Waterstones. But now I know Einstein was one of a handful of really extraordinary minds of his epoch. Leibniz, Schrödinger, Plank, Tesla, etc. The world had some really clever guys in it!

So typical of the English to omit the basic fact of where a man was born and what nationality he was. Had he been an Englishman or of some other Western nationality, the English would have particularly emphasized this as part of their national pride. But since he was a Serb, then it's not cool and that's why they left it out.

This video feeds more on myth than history. Tesla was great, but not as unique and superior as presented here; like any inventor, he followed on the footsteps of other inventors and scientists before him. He did not invent alternating current, he improved it, and the War of the Currents was not between Edison and Tesla, but between Edison and Westinghouse; Tesla worked first for Edison and later for Westinghouse. The modest but well researched channel Kathy Loves Physics and History has a whole playlist called History of Science in Order with 50 videos about the history of electricity and akin subjects, putting everything and everyone in context, something the BBC didn't do. An example from Kathy's channel is this video about how Tesla is usually misrepresented as a "forgotten hero," "victim of Edison," or a sort of messiah crucified by the powers-that-be. Nothing of that is factual, the history of that time is documented, and that's what Kathy does and the BBC didn't do: look for the contemporary sources, instead of seeking opinions from fans. She even shows and quotes Teslas' writings: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGSWYn2Oq7SIfbs Or, if you don't believe in KZbin videos (but you are believing this one, right?), look for the historical sources, which you can see in the bottom of the Wikipedia article about Tesla, something that the BBC didn't do either. Or read any well researched Tesla biography or any history of electricity. Ask a librarian. Don't ask the BBC.

Well said. I also recommend “Kathy Loves Physics and History.” Journalists that cover everything can’t possibly know what they are talking about. To get the straight story, it is much better to go to people that specialize in the field being covered, and don’t try to sensationalize.
