In the 1970s a forgotten project to link the river Tyne to the river Tees was built over 6 years and 21 miles long, here is what it looks like today.

Back in the 1980s when I was a Town Planning Student we had to do a project on 'Great Planning Disasters'. I chose the Kielder Reservoir. Built at huge public expense in the 1960s and 70s based entirely on duff economic forecasts that predicted exponential gowth in demand for water for the Teesside Steel and chemical industries. Just when it was completed came the Oil Crisis, economic collapse and Thatcherism. The sole economic justification for building it no longer existed. The Northumbrian Water Authority was suddenly left with a huge debt and what is now effectively the largest boating pond in the World. At least those of us in the North East never need drought restrictions, not that we ever did before! This project was and is simply one of the most scandalous and under reported wastes of public and private money ever.

And I bet that some of those that planned it are propping up the bar in some country pub (on a big fat pension), telling anyone that will listen, that they had an important job and they were much better at it than any of the others they worked with! The worlds full of them. Meanwhile the country continues to go down the drain, pun intended!

In London the taxpayer payed millions for a de-salination plant to provide plentiful water because we have hose-pipe bans all the time. Then they found found that running it would reduce profits so they switched it off and paid themselves more bonus.

A big thank you; both for making this video: and to those who took the trouble to tell us what it was built to do? (It's a water transfer tunnel of exceptional length)

I remember having to do some NDT testing on some welded sections in that tunnel. I was a bloody big pipe I can tell you. That was around 24 years or so ago, I can't remember now. I had forgotten all about it until I came across your post. Thank you.

The Tyne Tees Tunnel (also known as the Kielder Water Transfer Scheme), is an important part of water management in the North East of England. It allows for water to be released from Kielder reservoir down the Tyne to Riding Mill, where it can then be pumped via pipeline into the Wear and Tees Rivers. The scheme comprises of several assets including a 4 mile long pumping main, pumping station, head tanks, inspection shafts, river outlets and the very impressive 21 mile tunnel which carries water under the moors to the Wear and Tees. At the time of writing, it is unknown how often the scheme is used to pump water between the rivers.

How strange never heard of this. I was just to the west of Hamsterley forest a while back and there was this bizarre little building which also had a visible normal brick skin then an outer more traditional stone one, also securely locked up. I presumed it was something water related. Just looked at your map again in the video and the tunnel line goes right through where i saw it so obviously an inspection entrance building like the ones you found!

Round about 1996 ; they built a loading gantry at Sadberge,near Darlington. Tankers had to go down the A19,and back up the A1. There were a couple of scary incidents that probably weren't made public,but I heard there was a tanker load of orange juice tipped in the water by mistake.

This is called the Tyne Tunnel.... crosses under the river Tyne and ends just outside of South Shields goes nowhere near the Pennines or the River Tees! I live close to the Tyne Tunnel and have done since it opened. Where on earth have you got this ridiculous information from?
@tonyf68
@tonyf68 5 ай бұрын
the Tyne Tunnel is a completely different tunnel to the one that this video is about. As you’ll know from living near it, the Tyne Tunnel is now two road tunnels which take the A19 under the Tyne, between East Howdon and Jarrow. The tunnel that’s featured in this video is a water transfer tunnel (not a road tunnel), much further along the Tyne valley, to move water (if it’s needed) from Kielder to the river Tees (through the North Pennines).
@maureenharris3845
@maureenharris3845 5 ай бұрын
@@tonyf68 I've no idea about any other tunnel under the Tyne, except for the pedestrian tunnel between Howdon and Jarrow... to be honest, I'd never heard of the tunnel you refer to but that's probably as it's only a tunnel to regulate the water from the Kielder reservoir and is never mentioned anywhere. Perhaps those who live closer to this tunnel/pipeline are well aware of it, it's more over to the west, well away from the Tynemouth area where I live.
