The Forgotten Mode of Pikmin 3

Pikmin 3 Deluxe added a lot of features to the Wii U original. One of the biggest ones was the new "Side Stories" mode featuring Olimar and Louie. Despite Nintendo advertising this feature heavily, it has been left forgotten by most players and this video will inspect why.

Honestly I really like how the side story characterizes Olimar and Louie’s relationship. It shows how much Olimar really wants to be a mentor and lead Louie down the right path, but Louie still wants to act the way he does even if it constantly gets him in danger and trouble.

Honestly Louie does care about Olimar, he just doesn’t think straight or really socialize well it doesn’t help that Olimar is a bit more nasty to him than he was in Pikmin 2. Like Louie comments in Pikmin 4 that Olimar doesn’t get mad at him when he screws up, so when Olimar yells at him in 3 Louie bails on him because he thought he could trust Olimar. I definitely feel by the events of Pikmin 3 Olimar and especially Louie were getting sick of this damn planet and we’re getting over worked especially with the implication that Olimar and Louie were shipped back out to the planet after Louie was rescued in 2. With the president taking a vacation afterwards.

@@BigBoy257 I think it says a lot about their relationship that it’s implied that Olimar immediately wanted to go back to the pikmin planet to rescue him considering the President says “What there’s more treasure out there?” When we see Olimar telling him something, it’s possible that Olimar wanted to drop everything even spending time with his family to rescue Louie.

I wound up streaming the Side Stories and I said by the end of it they were basically everything I wanted out of a “Pikmin 3” when I was a kid. And while I still love the main story, I stand by those feelings, it just feels nice to play as Olimar & Louie again.

the sidestories were honestly so cool to me. depending on what pikmin 4 is in the canon (ffs we still do not have a definitive answer its so annoying) the side stories are technically the end of the original trilogy’s canon.

Definitely since Olimar's comeback is a definitive end to the og trilogy and now we're at the Revival Trilogy for the Pikmin series starting with Pikmin 4 which felt like a fresh new start to the franchise

I’ve seen somewhere that Pikmin 4 is after 1 and 2, but before 3. Olimar just pretends to have forgotten everything to avoid the embarrassment of crashing on the same planet so many times. I like to think of that as the canon

pikmin 4 makes more sense if you consider 2, 3, and 4 to all be different timelines instead of a continuation of the same timeline pikmin 2 is all treasures from pikmin 1, pikmin 3 is only essential parts, pikmin 4 is failure to get the parts its not perfect but I feel it helps, helps explain 'retconning' too if its just a different timeline with slightly different events

I feel that the biggest drawback with this mode is that it’s mostly just a rehash from the mission mode since most of it is just collecting fruits and battling enemies, which sucks because the new objectives such as having to reunite the captains are never expanded upon to make a unique challenge other than carrying the ship part but as you said the pikmin always take the same path so even then it’s kind of just a waste

Even if the execution wasn't the best, i'm glad Olimar's Comeback had a big role involving the Hocotate Freight ship. In Pikmin 3, the normal one, i was kinda sad seeing the ship trashed on the Mireclops' arena, especially if we have in mind that the ship has a personality. This game mode is also the last time we ever know about said ship because in Pikmin 4 it could be the reason why Louie is on PNF-404 but we never see it, and it's not even mentioned. I may just miss it because i'm a tryhard Pikmin 2 fan, or just because i main Olimar in Smash Bros; but if Pikmin 4 ever gets a DLC then i hope the ship re-appears.

Something I liked in Olimar's Comeback is in the last level when fighting the long legs the music is a remixed version of the Pikmim 1 title screen. It's small but it's a nice little callback, especially with the yellow baldy making me think it's supossed to be the beady from 1 and 2

I still liked these side modes all the same, I'll never say no to more Pikmin content. The original Pikmin 3 was already pretty content heavy, and most ports don't usually add much to their base games, so it still felt like a treat regardless

After all, he suggests once or twice throughout the game that he intends to buy it back with whatever leftover money they have.

after playing pikmin 4 feels weird seeing 11:02 and not seeing olimar say something along the lines "I'm sorry pikmin...." Honestly one of my major annoyances with pikmin 4 were all the unecessary character dialogue telling you to use items, when you get low on health or lose more than 2 pikmin at once. I did find it interesting how if you try to use an ice bomb or lightning shock on the waterwraith, russ shows a surprised face dialogue saying something along the lines of "Ridiculous! not even the lightning shock works??"

I was so excited about the long-legs in the final level, because I _thought_ that was intended to be the return of Beady Long Legs (who has been absent ever since they replaced him with Baldy Long Legs) but NOPE it doesn't even have an official name and is basically just a palette swap. For the "carry the ship part" mission and its multiple paths make me rhink it was supposed to have the pikmin follow one captain in the same way brittany was in the formidable oak chase sequence Like louie would clear out a path for olimar and the pikmin to go through. It could even have some story potential like olimar taking the opportunity to train louie on dandori. Plus it would've been cool to see that mechanic reused

I think that the sidestories being baby mode is a good thing, it gives newcomers basically a practice mode for the cruelty of Challenge Mode platinum medals It just sucks it's the only extra contnent in this 7-year-old-at-the-time game, us Pikmin fans and especially Wii U double dippers got not a lot of substantial content out of it

I think this game mode would've been made so much better if they kept the quirky map layout variants but made it a traditional campaign, even if it's smaller. Or maybe make it a campaign in the Bingo Battle and Mission Mode maps. Pikmin 3's Mission Mode was just so fun compared to literally everything else that making this Mission Mode 2 just felt shallow.

The Side Stories were honestly my favourite part of Pikmin 3 Deluxe. When I was younger, I dreamed of an alternate mode where you could play as Olimar and Louie during the events of Pikmin 3, and the Deluxe version gave me exactly what I wanted! Some might call them underwhelming, but I really appreciated the new music, the little bits of characterisation for Olimar and co. and how the epilogue tied up several loose ends from the original game. Lastly, the fact that Olimar's Comeback is technically the canonical end of the Pikmin storyline after Pikmin 4 threw everything in the trash gives it some sentimental value to me. Side note: I'm pretty sure the missions in the epilogue where you collect fruit were orders from the President, since Olimar and Louie were originally sent back to PNF-404 to repay a second debt in Olimar's Assignment, and the treasure hunting missions in the epilogue are just them gathering up any additional treasures/fruits they can find.

I remember the first four of these missions. The other ten you mentioned I did not remember at all. Made me think I didn't unlock it or something. Just now I booted up Pikmin 3 Deluxe and I had platinum on every mission. You mentioning that the last ten have really easy timers makes me wonder if I only struggled with platinum on the first four and that's why I remember them.

Honestly I really don’t like how 3 handled Olimar and Louie, at least moreso Olimar, Louie was handled fine and the worst thing I can say is that the thing that would’ve explained why he bailed on the Koppaites was cut. Olimar in this is kind of a callous idiot, a far cry from how he was in 1 and 2. Personally I kind of wish Olimar and Louie were not present in the games story mode to the extent that they were and that mission mode was their own story, have it be Olimar and Louie going on some sort of research expedition for Hocotate and they’re also collecting treasure because the president is greedy. I also think it would’ve been nice to give them a new captain to make them a trio weither it could be Olimar’s son to fully match the Koppaite trios color scheme and finally see one of Olimar’s family physically in the series or a brand new Hocotation. Also yea, I feel the President doesn’t see the Pikmin as companions like Olimar and to a lesser extent Louie. Hell I feel he only went on the Louie rescue mission to get more treasure.

Technically speaking, they are employees, as the ability for them to continue living by having assistance collecting nutrients means they are in fact getting compensation, just under a non-monetary lens.

I play the side stories quite a lot - they’re meh in terms of plot, but they’re really replayable in the same way as the regular mission modes are. Regular mission modes are pretty fun to optimise, and this is just more elaborate mission mode with new challenges, with a vague story over the top for no reason
