The Forgotten Nintendo 64 Joystick (for PC)

The most likely scenario for this joystick's creation is Nintendo's marketing department going kinda looney somewhere in the middle of the N64 era and early into the Gamecube era. You would find Nintendo 64/Gamecube branded cameras, CD players, headphones ,etc at drugstores and the like.

Whoa, that is so rare! The shape of this Nintendo 64 controller for PCs looks very much like something used for commonly known PC joysticks at that time, aside from the handle on the joystick for fingers to push against during complicated games (I didn't expect it to be badly worn out). Great review and nice gameplay!

This isn't the first time Nintendo has released stuff for PCs. I recall that MJD already made a video about the Nintendo themes for Windows XP. *Edit* : Thanks to a felow commenter, I now know that the XP themes came later then this joystick.

I love that this exists for PC, but doesn't work with your N64. 😂 Definitely doesn't stop me from wanting one! Also, to get rid of that smokey smell, spray it with disinfectant spray for the next two weeks. That usually does the job, or at least reduces the scent enough to where you don't smell it when you walk into the room. Awesome video!!!

Odd how buttons 1 and 2 are red like the N64 start button, but 3 and 4 are yellow like the C-buttons. 3 and 4 make sense, but I would've expected 1 to be blue and 2 to be green

I picked one up for $60 following LGR's coverage on it years ago. Definitely paid that KZbin tax then, cuz I saw one new in the box for $35 less a month later.

So the joystick was marketed more for FPS games, as ball mice in the late 90's we're horrible for gaming. I played Quake 3 and Tribes with ESDF and using this stick for aiming (inverted) before getting the MTE trackball mouse that I've stuck with up until the GameBall launched in 2021. I still play with mouse inversion today 😆

But it was super common for FPS games like Duke Nukem and Quake to be played with a joystick for aiming and shooting, rather than a terrible ball mouse. Movement was still with using the keyboard.

I think it was more of a remnant of joysticks having a long history on home computers even prior to the PC. Ball mice weren't amazing especially when dirty, but the NOS Logitech one I use for my retro PC feels perfectly fine for the likes of Doom and Quake.

I had this joystick back in the day!! I picked it up at a Big Lots in Altamonte Springs / Maitland Florida. The "twist" feature on the joystick was wild.

Gaming back in those days, it was a must to have a joystick. Alot of games straight up required one. Playing games like Mech Warrior, it made use of the joystick, keyboard, and mouse all at the same time. You'd have the joystick to control the Mech over all, but you'd have your more complicated stuff for like power systems and weapon system selections, targeting, heat management, team mate orders and stuff like that on the keyboard, and you had mouse look to more fine tuned aiming. It some how all worked together in a way that playing on a controller simply doesn't. Games like Tie Fighter you used the keyboard for advanced stuff like Mech Warrior but used the stick for controlling the craft, and the mouse was reserved to the UI for like mode and menu selection. I kind of miss those days of gaming. A controller works for most games and is just easier to pick up and use, but it's still removes alot of the game experience for the sake of that convenience. For games like F-22 Raptor, which was a simulation style game, I can't imagine how lame it would feel to play with a gamepad these days. I don't miss playing platformers with a keyboard or joystick though.

I used to work for Goodwill for almost 5 yrs with the company and from my Understanding is the NAMCO E3 Press Kit was Donated to the Goodwill Store in which I worked at I'm assuming whoever donated the E3 Press Kit to the store went to E3 2005 18 Years ago May 18 (Wednesday) Thru the 20th (Friday) of May of 2005 only 3 days or the Donator could had gotten the NAMCO E3 Press kit off of Ebay but who knows for sure! oh and Michael did you archive the Assets and Trailer DVD's from the NAMCO E3 Press Kit?! just curious

The quickest way that I've found to get rid of that smoke smell is Dishwashing liquid and water. it does the trick.

I wanted this badly as a kid when I saw that it existed. (Can't remember if I saw it in a store or magazine) I would have been horribly disappointed by it if I had one. Though you can be sure I would have kept it existed in good and working condition the entire time due to it being official Nintendo branded.

There was a joystick around this era that was filled with mercury because the company who created it wanted a heavy solid stick that would over time become easier to manipulate as if it was floating on liquid because it was.

Can you try playing some N64 games on the $5 98 PC using this Joystick. If you are questioning if this is possible or not but it's possible. Use UltraHLE, an 90's emulator that uses the 3dfx technology and it run N64 games at full speed with no problem
