Back in High School I was in ski club and when I’d get home late at night these B-rated thrillers would be on cable tv and I saw this in 89-90 timeframe. Well I love horror and jump scares but at the time this truly rattled me. Her moaning sounds, the camera use, and the creepy basement got me good. It’s better than a horror film because it doesn’t rely on gore… this is scary for all the right reasons. Fast forward to when I could search for this film online and I remembered nothing about the names of the actors or the title of the film but I wanted to see it again. You can see hints of this movie in Stir of Echoes.

A shame more people don’t know about this movie. While there are many ghost films, very few really get into the eerie quality and instead go for cheap thrills. This film captures all the elements of a truly eerie ghost movie. Like “The Haunting”( the original, not the remake) it builds suspense and the scares are from a good set up, not a cheap thrill by a guy with a chainsaw, ax, machete, knife, anvil, etc.

This started out creepy and I was getting mentally prepared to freak myself out tonight. Then it turned into a solid, believable love story. When she first walked out of the basement, that scene was ahead of its time. Thats stuff you would expect to see today like from The Grudge or The Conjuring but it was rare in 1990.

The haunting music was composed by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). I first saw the movie when I was 14 years-old. Not only that, I watched it when it came on late at night. It's easier to be terrified with imagination that late at night. It gives you nightmares for years. lol

I lived in Denver for 2 years but none of the locations looked familiar to me. What's chilling is The Changeling is the scariest movie ever to me and I did not realize the real story happened in Denver. I discovered this when doing a project on it in film school in Denver. And that weekend I house sat for a woman who lived near the Cheesman Park that is mentioned in the movie and I could not sleep in that house. Taking a shower and having to walk up the stairs was terrifying. The dog that lived there even acted uncomfortable and stayed by my side at all times. That weekend was creepy.

My sister has lived in Denver for quite a while. There’s a beautiful area, south of downtown. All 1800’s homes and buildings but everything is amazingly maintained. I can’t remember the area (I’m an east coaster) but I remember it being somewhere near the nature and science museum. I’m guessing that’s the neighborhood of Denver where this takes place.

The only soundtrack listings in the credits are "Rainstorm" and "Everything Turned Black". So my guess is that the piano music everyone is asking about must be part of one of those 2 tracks. I find it hard to believe there were truly only 2 pieces of music used for the WHOLE movie though. The piano music is definitely something contemporary in origin... it isn't a classical piece from the past. If people are referring to the Shubert piece though, it's an Impromptu. Moonlight Sonata wasn't in this movie as several people thought in the comments. The piece people are probably referring to is a contemporary original piece for piano made for the movie. Why it isn't listed in the credits though is annoyingly stupid and confusing, especially when you consider how often it was used.

I love the movie but it is a rip off from 1982 Filipino movie called Haplos or Touch. Plot man returns to hometown visiting after his mother died and meets two women. One is a ghost who plays haunting music on her piano in an old house. It turns out that he resembles her old lover who left her to be raped and murdered by the Japanese during WW2. And she’s haunting him until he fell in love with her. She just wanted him to return back to her and felt betrayed he didn’t come back for her and left her to die. Same in the movie he left the woman after being killed by her husband and betrayed by the lover accepting the hush money.
