The Forgotten Percy Farm House Up North in Maryland *Stunning Barn & Springhouse

This old house dates back too the late 1800’s but the barn and land are much older dating back too the late 1700’s! The original house which stood on the land was a old fashioned two story log house which burned down in the mid 1800’s and then the current house was built. Obviously some large remodel and additions have happened but the house still retains its old bones and you can even see how the original log house was repurposed into the new home and barn. Sadly the land is all up for auction and the house will most likely end up torn down for a new subdivision. Thanks for watching!

Sometimes I feel almost a sense of longing, but don't know why. And I hope that my house and possessions won't end up the same way.

3:44 -- those types of door locks are called 'rimlocks', and can still be bought from House of Antique Hardware. The originals, though, are to be preferred. 5:22 -- the brown swirly ceramic doorknobs are often called 'mineral' knobs, and originals can cost as much as 85$ each. 9:10, you mentioned the funky-looking woodgrain -- this painted graining was all the rage in the 1870s-1890's, especially for those trying to pass off plain old pine doors and trim for something fancy like walnut, mahogany, or burl. In vernacular houses, though, the graining became more folk-art than faux finish. Original folk art painted graining is rare, mostly because they've all been repainted to fit a succession of trends.

beautiful old farmhouse, Kappy , i love the ancient wiring and the light switches,, they say though that the early electric lines weren't as safe as todays are, i can believe that, otherwise though a beautiful place, if i lived there in the spring and summer with the windows opened,, the sound of that water would put me to sleep, so good :)

That's a relaxing place with the sounds of the stream and birds chirping. I bet it was even more soothing before traffic and the road. I love those old wooden doors and moulding in the house. Can't beat those old solid materials. They looked great and were great quality imo. A lot of hard work back in those old farming days, but it sure would have been nice to wind down to the sounds of nature and serenity. Can't beat the calmness and peacefulness of nature.

The black on the walls in the basement would be suet from burning coal, I know because that was our source of heat for 35 1/2 years, could never get it scrubbed off , matter of fact our kitchen ceiling looked almost black. Thanks for showing us the old places, I often think about the people that might have called those places home.

Loved the Percy Farm 👍🙏💕 I would love to save all of the doors, door & window casings, wainscoting from the house & Timbers in the barn!!! You could make & restructure that barn into a fabulous home!!! Unfortunately, the house, now, is too close to the road & not well planned out to save as a home…but…the barn, on the other hand, with few materials needing to be purchased, could be turned into a wonderful home 👍💕 The stream could provide the water source for the house 👍 I love listening to the stream run💕❤️❣️ I do hope that someone salvages the salvageable pieces of the house & barn that I mentioned prior 👍🙏💕 Thank you Kappy, for another great adventure of exploring!!! If the walls could talk what stories they could tell us .....there is a lot of history here . Simple but beautiful the two tone paint scheme that was in some of the was very fitting . Hello Kappy! Boy, they sure needed to move THAT house out of the way of the road! Wonder what Grandpa Josey would have thought about it! I'll bet they got their water from that stream, back when free running water was safe for folks to drink. We drank from Lemonade Creek when we lost power from Hurricane Frederic and the well pump wouldn't work. Daddy and I even built a wooden box to keep things cool, even though we didn't hike up to the spring. It worked pretty well. Honestly, they should give I.Q. tests before they sell spray paint! Idiots should not be allowed to buy any of it! This was such a pretty house once! The different wallpapers and the nice woodwork speak of someone's pride in this building. It is a shame about the graffiti, very obviously done by naughty children who have found the freedom to write every dirty word they know. It's a shame the roof is failing because they whole house will cave in before too many years have passed. All in all, it's a good house to explore, Kappy. Ruby would like all the different wallpapers. I'm glad it had no garbage scattered all about. It doesn't deserve such treatment. Maybe that water running in the barn was to act as a springhouse. The furnace with the two holes is interesting. Maybe they made maple syrup there. That's a nice post and beam barn. I'll bet the Bar wood Builder guys would want to see it. It's very old, as they used mortar and tenon construction and wooden pegs to secure the joinery. It's probably from the late 1800s. It's very beautiful! Some farmer was very pleased with this farm and very proud to provide so well for his family. What a wonderful old home, Kappy! A great explore and very enjoyable. Thank you for this one. It's going on my favorites list!

The barn WAS the most interesting. My Dad would have been 105 this month and always said the old farmers put much more work into the barn and other out buildings than their home, even though that house was well constructed. I wonder if the Amish helped construct the barn due to the wooden dowls?

Totally from the same time period as my Grandparents house in Rochester, Michigan, with the same style, the angled steps going up with a door closing upstairs off for winter heating purposes, the spring house, the stream, the long full length windows, that my siblings n I grew up visiting for every holiday n for 2 weeks every summer!!! Awesome!!! First one I've seen that so resembled their over 100 year old house. Unfortunately, it is no longer there, as Rochester was developed greatly after their deaths in the 1980's. We have a few pics to remember it by though, as it was a wonderful house n property with flower gardens, veggie gardens, berry bushes n a house chock full of antiques we grew up with and that taught us old time values which we all embody to this day!!! Great walk down childhood memory lane to beautiful times that we were lucky enough to grow up with!!! Thanks for this truly inspiring post

The house was likely built next to the stream so there would running water available year round, with the water access so far underground (basement) it wouldn't freeze when it was constantly dripping. That barn is a work of art! It doesn't look like it's being used for anything anymore, had they put a metal roof on the house it too might not be rotting away. The door might have kept closing because the walls/door jams are so crooked/settled? Thanks Kappy, see you next time 🙂

I believe the building with the running water was a summer kitchen or main kitchen and the inning water was for drinking, cooking and keeping things cool or cold in summer months a spring house! Love your videos

As a kid we lived halfway between Baltimore and York PA for a bit and we'd wander the creeks and corn fields after school amd find all sorts of odd little foundations and walls. Always wanted to get back down there and find a little place with a creek tucked away in the hills near Gunpowder Falls in Monkton.

What a sight! imagine all that water running without a meter to charge for it! (there is some public utilites official wringing his hands over THAT!) D'ya think those big barrels in the springhouse, beside the fire grill front might have been for heated laundry? Or maybe for processing maple sugar? Did I miss a kitchen? Love your close ups of latches, handles and I've never seen an electrical switch of that configuration! Funny (or not) how they Always decide to build busy highways beside old houses (a good excuse for usurpation by public domain). And What A Barn!!! You can still hear the echos of hard work being done throughout it!. those were the days, when you worked hard and didn't have time or energy left for defacing other people's property, but you were sure of your own sovereignty! (few folks today even know what that word means -or care) The good old days really were just that.

The outbuilding with the running water may have been a wash house for doing laundry. The two circular openings in the brick structure would have held large vats of water. A fire would have been lit to heat a large pot of water in which to wash clothing, and then they would have rinsed it in a second large vat of clean water. The funky painting on the doors was commonly done in the 1800s. It is a technique called vinegar graining and used either vinegar or old beer mixed with dry pigment to create unique grain patterns on plain pine doors.

Many times the kitchen was in a small separate building to keep from overheating the house in summer and because so many fires start in the kitchen. At least that is common down south where I live. The smaller stalls in the barn may be what my dad called farrowing stalls. That isn’t the way he said it though. Lol. Anyway, you would put a sow in there to have her baby pigs. You didn’t want to give her too much room to move around or she would kill the piglets. AND if she mashed one, then she would often eat it!!🤦🏻

Have to say that l didn’t find this house very appealing and the configuration of the downstairs was odd. The barn on the other hand was stunning!!! The fireplace in the basement was for canning and it may have been the original kitchen, but the spring house was also used that way. The things in the attic hanging were grain sacks, used to make clothing and kitchen towels. Thanks, wish they could save it all! Be safe!
