I also read it years ago, a couple of times. To me, listening to it gave me a completely different experience with it. A bit more detailed perhaps? Did you have a similar experience? Just curious. Take care!

I read this book over 20 years ago and I always go back to it whenever I feel like I'm having a hard time, just to remind me it could be much worse. Oh, young man, rejoice in thi youth.

My grandpa used this book a lot to explain the war even though he was an allied fighter he was also in contact with germans because he spent a year in captivity. Now that i read the book twice i finally understand the quality, its more than a history story its a call for humanity to rise above its monkey brain.

You are about to embark on the most incredible journey of literature / audiobook. The story is harrowing as it is brutal, but the literary style and penmanship is worthy of the best! I go as far as saying Guy Sajers book Forgotten Soldier is a WAY better piece of literature than Hemmingways Call To Arms and a notch above All Quiet On The Western Front. There, I said it.

So far I'd have to say this book is pretty amazing. I've read a lot of books on WWII and I read many diaries of the same struggle and this is a very different take. This writer is much more skilled and unusually I really like the guy. This is a multi-part audiobook and it's very long but at this point I'm looking forward to all of it. I read a review of it on Google when I was first starting at and there were some reviewers that thought it was one of the best books ever written about the second world war and there have been some really good ones. It's great to not read another book written by a pompous general who could have conquered Russia if only this or that hadn't happened.🎉

There is a part of this story about 3 hours into this first segment where the author sort of breaks the fourth wall in addresses the audience about the best way to use language to understand the severity of being a soldier and war in general. It's beautifully written and is very unexpected. I'd seen this book before but had never heard anything about it. I'm extremely glad that I give it a chance. 🎉🎉🎉

its a story of pain and torture, both physical and mental....its not like anything in the modern western world, its more like a story about genghis khan or attila the hun .... this young german soldier tries to portray himself and his cause as somewhere halfway between reasonable/noble and also suffering victim unreasonably tormented by cruel and heartless enemies.....the germans of his era were like the japanese of the era, warlike and imperialistic, and nothing good came from it for anybody.

@josephleinhauser6130 Жыл бұрын
The worst crimes committed against humanity in recorded history were those committed by the communist dictatorships in China and the Soviet Union. Together they are responsible for an estimated 100 million deaths (on the low end). This book is about the experiences of a single German soldier on the eastern front.
