I heard this on Wonderama. My older cousins called in to local LA radio stations to play it(along with Desmond Dekkars, Israelites, which was also played on Wonderama). The DJs told us it was an older song that hadnt charted. But I guess that many others had heard it on Wonderama too and within 2 weeks it was a big hit on LA radio, especially “BOSS RADIO” 93 KHJ.
