I don't think they are lovers in canon, just really good friends. The animation doesn't do the story justice though, I cried so much for them when reading the book. Like the part right before song zichen died, he knew he could let xiao xingchen know who he is by putting his sword in xiao xingchen's hand. But he ultimately decided not to. He'd rather die alone then letting xiao xingchen bear the knowledge that he had just unknowingly killed his best friend.

Hm, that's because The Untamed is heavily censored. (Not just gay stuff, things like Wei Wuxian being more morally grey can't pass either) They changed the plot a lot, Untamed isn't considered canon but more an alternate universe. (It even has separate fandoms in China from what I heard) The donghua (anime) is more faithful to the novel in that regard (but still some things are changed). I was a bit surprised to find out how much things changed between adaptations honestly but it seems to be normal for chinese franchise
