This video describes the four reinforcement schedules from behavior therapy. The terms fixed (every n times or n amount or time) and variable (variable number of responses or variable amount of time) are combined with ratio (based on the number of responses) and interval (based on time) to generate the four schedules. A Fixed Ratio system of reinforcement schedule reinforces every nth response. Fixed Ratio schedules are ideal for optimizing quantity over quality. A Fixed Interval reinforces every n amount of time. Fixed Interval schedules are ideal for optimizing quality over quantity. Variable Ratio schedules reinforce at a varying number of responses. Variable Interval schedules reinforce at varying amounts of time. Fixed schedules are easy to extinguish and easy to learn. Variable schedules taking longer to learn and are more resistant to extinction.
