Had a 1986 made to order. I chose the regular notchback coupe, ordered the 5.0 with the 5-speed manual, highway gears, the handling package. Basically a GT without the hatchback, badging and that silly "ground effect" cladding that only adds weight! Or just like the State Trooper cars but with shiny wheels. Got 18-20 mpg in town and 27-30 mpg on the highway. It had 225 hp, enough. It was the car that officially and effectively brought us out of the malaise period. Never used oil, and never gave us any problems, except for a recall on the catalytic converters.

Same story for my first new car, a 08 GT premium. I miss that car. Bought it with my deployment money. Ironic that around 05-08 we had a breakout period from a kind of "malaise" when the muscle came back. Ford, Dodge, and Chevy starting to get serious again.

I didn't get into the Foxbody until I was in my 40's. Up until that time I was a GM guy who always admired the Fox Mustang from afar. I ending up having two of them, a notch and a hatch. Both were LX's(no ground effects) which suited me perfectly. 5.0 5 sp. with basic bolt ons for a while, then did a rear gear, aluminum heads, cam, and eventually superchargers. Did a couple stroker engine swaps by myself in my garage. Man I miss those cars. they were always reliable and fun.

Back in high school in 1998, I used to swap cars with a friend for a few hours. I had a 94 Cutlass 3.4 dohc. He had a 92 Mustang GT with a few mods. That thing was so much fun I never wanted to give it back. I will always love the sound of a 5.0 with Flowmasters!

It is a nicely preserved example but the auto trans just kills it for me. I owned two of these and the manual is really the only way to go for this car. My first car was a 1988 GT with T-Tops and my second car was a 1989 LX 5.0. Now you got me wanting another one. 😁

😂 it was my fault. Driving in a new town and missed a stop light. Ended up getting t-bone by a 300 ZX Turbo on the driver side. The impact slammed the passenger side into a light post. The frame was crushed on both sides, but none of the glass broke and everything from the B-pillar forward was undamaged.

I was a CA Highway Patrol officer from Jan 1981 to Dec 2002. While assigned to the CHP Malibu Area, I was privileged to patrol 2 of the 221 1982 Fox Body Notchback 5.0 (2 bbl carb) units. They came with a 4 speed manul trans. The excitement started when the 1984 5.0 5 speed manual was issued. This car came with a 4 bbl carb and wide wheels. On April evening around 7:30 pm, I was on duty patrolling in my 1982 5.0 when Motor Transport delivered 2 1984 5.0 coupes to the Malibu office. The primary assigned officer of one of the 84 Mustangs was away at the CHP Academy. He had told me to "run out" the 82 car upon reaching 84,000 miles before taking the new 84 car out. Well, knowing that the 84 car had a 4 bbl, roller cam, factory headers and wide wheels, I parked the 82 car with 83,884 miles on the odometer and fired up the 84. Oh man! I was in love with the burble from the two polished exhaust pipes. The odometer had 7 miles when I rolled out onto PCH. Dispatch put out a BOL that Officer Clark was attempting to stop a BMW N/B on PCH from Zuma Beach at 100 plus mph, and for me to prepare to take over with the 5.0 car. Officer Clark was in a 1984 Dodge Diplomat. I stopped on the N/B shoulder and saw a dk blue BMW 320i pass by S/B at a high rate of speed. I looked in my left side mirror to clear traffic so I could make a u-turn and pursue. Seconds later, I got struck in the rear by a 1973 Volvo DL 240 and was propelled up a dirt embankment. Both doors were jammed shut. I could not exit the car. Moments later I heard a female LASD deputy say, turn your head. She shattered the passenger glass and assisted in extricating me. The beautiful 1984 black and white with 12 miles on the clock was destroyed. I lived to arrest thousands of drunk drivers in my career.

I had an ex CHP 86 Mustang in FL . Man the back end was light on those . I replaced it with a 89 GT not long after . The extra weight of the hatch tamed the back end a bit . Fun cars .

Ford got lots of mileage out of the Fox platform, starting with the 1978 Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr models. They were available with the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder engine 3.3 liter I6 engine or the 5.0 liter V8 engine, which was the only choice if one wanted any semblance of a vehicle that could get out of its own way. Unfortunately, my parents opted for a black showroom model 1978 4 door Fairmont with the I6 and 1bbl carburetor in August 1978. It did manage to stay in the family until sometime in the summer of 2006, when my dad sold it to a local junkyard. For what it was worth, it did do its job reliably, for the most part, its anemic performance notwithstanding.

The 5 Speed was considerably faster…. And infinitely more fun… love the Fox. So light and all front end. I had an 88 GT 5 speed and my sister a 92. Same cars. Mine was white beers black. Wish I had photos of our driveway back then. Didn’t realize how special it was at the time. My pix today would be a 93’ LX 5.0 Notchback. Muscle car looks with the right tire wheel package..I’m driving my 5th Mustang today… 21’ GT PP1 6 speed. Come a long way by I would love to have a Fox in my garage….

Great coverage on the Fox. I too was a Camaro guy. My Dad owned an 89 RS Camaro that loved, until... A friend of mine took me for a ride in his 87 LX Mustang. There was something "different" with the "feel" of that car. I was immediately hooked. Bought an 88 GT that I had to later sell due to "life". I regretted it for years. In 2015, I relocated it in a farm field (who I 😊originally sold it to) tried to buy back but she wouldn't let it go. So... I went off and found my current one. I love the late 60's fastbacks, but the 87-93 Fox is what I grew up with and I absolutely adore them. Bill is correct, they are a great car to learn on, as there is so much on blogs, KZbin and Facebook about them. Such a huge aftermarket and a "willing to help" community.

I miss this era. It was a time when 250hp was something to get excited about. Then the hp war started and by the mid to late 90’s 300hp was exciting. Now today everyone wants something that goes 0-60 in under 3 seconds and we have cars with 700+ hp owned by dipshits paying $1500 per month that they can’t afford. Even with these insane hp and 0-60 numbers nothing is exciting about the automotive industry anymore.

I had a new '91, full red w/grey int., 5 spd, fact sunroof...the 5.0 was bulletproof, keep my foot in it all the time, hanging the ass out turning at stop lights. Let a buddy drive it one Sat morning we were already buzzed on bloody mary's and he kicked it making a turn and left the road and we rolled down an embankment and nose down in a creek. Totaled! I went the next day to take my cd changer out of the back and lifted the rear seat bottom and even the floor was split into. I robbed what I could off of it while there...still have the 5-star wheel center caps like new, fact sunroof bag, maybe the shift boot...it's all in the sunroof bag in a box somewhere. I would have taken the glass sunroof, but it flew out when we rolled down the bank. Good times, it was a blast to drive!

I had a 305 TPI auto trans IROC in 86 and these were my nemesis. I had to put headers and a Gale Banks exhaust with no cat to keep up with them. The 5.7 IROCs were a better match stock.

It drove me nuts that Chevy had to put in a motor with 50 more cubes to keep up with these Pintos. And no stick with the 5.7 until the 4th gen. Arrgghh!! I like the 3rd gen styling better.

What I liked about the Fox body Mustang was that Ford offered the 5.0 V8 in all trim and all body styles, unlike today where they force you to spring for the upper trim models. I personally would have ordered a GT with T-tops which were available until 1988. Something most Mustang owners would have avoided, but one i particularly coveted because it was so rare.

I am 45. I am very fortunate to have one (with my father) since it was new...a Titanium Frost/Black '91 GT Hatchback that we got on August 30, 1991. I clearly remember the day we picked it up, and even first seeing the car in the distance around five weeks earlier at the back of the dealer's grounds after they were closed on a Saturday night. I learned to drive on it when my father would take me out to drive illegally on Sundays, and eventually legally (though I started earlier with him in our '88 Mark VII). Its been upgraded with probably another 100hp years ago. None of this ruined the character of that engine. The automatic transmission was upgraded internally where it's not creating as much of a loss in power, if any, vs the 5 speed. The rear was changed to a 3.73, and even though it gives the car a nice feel when stabbing the pedal, I sometimes wonder if 3.55 might have been a better choice. It's still nicely balanced. We had Koni shocks and Eibach springs put in the car years ago, which did not take away from the character of the car, but made what was there better, where it not only handled better but also rides better. It had most of the options from the factory, missing only two. I remedied one of them...I always wanted the stereo with the graphic equalizer, and found a new old stock head unit for the systems with the equalizer and a new old stock equalizer, along with the amplifier (used) that goes specifically with that system in a Mustang. I have not installed it yet, and need to have Bluetooth added to it. I may use different speakers, possibly a small powered subwoofer, and possibly a larger amp if needed, though if I change the speakers, the ones I'd use are very efficient and, especially with lower bass the filtered to a sub, the factory amp may actually be fine given all that. The other missing option was the leather interior. That will happen, and then the car will be completely "loaded". More power will come too. There is something very special to have owned a car since it was new for this long. It's truly not "just" a car. I will never part with the car until I pass on.

My first thought also when I saw the antique tag on this gem...ugh. i bought a new '85 GT and remember the cheese grater taillights were somewhat controversial when they came out in '87. But as you say, there was the 5.0 LX also available that maintained the cleaner lines. I test drove an '86 with fuel injection and thought it ran smoother than my Holley-powered '85, but something about the carb with vacuum secondaries was just way more fun.

Well if you came up with a no option 87 to 92 coupe it would be a driver's race. The strippo notch and GN were both 14 second cars so it came down to driver skill. I had both at different points in the early 90s and I beat my share of GNs at the strip, but also took down many 5.0s in the GN. Especially the heavier/slower GT. The strippo notch weighed barely 3000 pounds. The GN was easily 400 more. It was fairly easy to bump the GNs power up, but stupidly easy (and cheap!) to do the same on sny foxbody. And let's not forget the Mustang was actually fun to drive, especially because you could row the gears. And, obviously a lot cheaper up front. The GN may have its place as one of GMs best 80s cars, but the 5.0 changed the game and brought us out of a very dark era of sloths!

The manuals were much quicker and in particular the 87-89's were the quickest. In 90 they changed the cam I believe and while rated the same they just didn't have the power. I had an 88 and walked all over 90-93's because they just didn't have it. Anyway really love the reviews and commentary dude!! ❤

That era of Mustang is quite unique and it's always fun seeing one out. The availability of parts is a plus, with my 91 Prelude it is definitely getting harder. Where I am in Hamilton, Ontario there simply aren't parts. I have a mechanic who is happy to work on the car, he got the muffler from Quebec and I sourced a relay and the side trim from Paragauay. I've had the bodywork maintained and have invested in painting so I'm definitely going to observe the " thing " into the foreseeable future. Thanks, Bill, everybody have a great day and week.

@@npet6842 I don't know about what percentage that would be. I think it was near $200 a month for insurance and I paid $13,000 for the car (it had around 24,000 miles on it). I just remember being annoyed at the insurance bill. I was 25 with a decent driving record. I later traded it in for a 1995 Z28 Camaro with a 6 speed. The insane thing is that the insurance was much less with the Chevy that had more power.

Had 89 and 90 great cars enjoyed them back n them days of flow master mufflers and x-pipes with 373 355 ring pinion, pulleys and so on, ahahaha now its 700-1599hp cars that get 27mpg and daily drive to the track. Amazing times!!!

Hello, great video. I've owned several Fox Mustangs, but my first Mustang was a 1977 Cobra II that I bought used. Now you never hear much good said about the II's But, I fell in love with it, the only mod on it was a conversion to dual exhaust. And with just that it was very quick! on the street it outran newer 350 Formula Firebirds and like Camaros...with a 2bbl 302.

in 1982 the HO was 157 hp. in 83 with the 4bbl added it was 175, RC added it to 210, then in 86 dropped to 200, and then in 87 to 225

Thanks for this one Bill.. I remember these, and yes, it's scary to think how old they are today. Fun times with '80s muscle cars back in the day though. Although I'm an acolyte of Saint Mark of Excellence at General Motors, I've always had a grudging respect for the Dearborn gang at Ford, and the Mopar boys at Auburn Hills.

Yessir, my friend Troy drove us down to Panama City for Senior Trip in 1990. Badass car, thank goodness he was a responsible type. We all watched as an LX 5.0 got ruined by another senior, smacked a telephone pole and totaled it.

A great car. I had an 82 with a straight six, four speed and T tops. Now I have an 84 GT350 Convertible with the "big" engine (5.0 HO) putting out 175 HP with a 5spd. We love it! We also have a base 70 convertible with the base 2v carb 302 making 220hp and a new 23 GT loaded with 6spd with 450 hp... Despite being lowest in horsepower, the 84 is just a blast to drive. The torque pulls for days.

Had an '85 (in '85). Never jealous of the facelift in '87, the cladding always seemed overdone to me. I was envious of the interior - it was vastly better.

In 1985 my best buddy had a 5.0 GT manual. I had an IROC auto. We had a blast road racing around the industrial park on Sundays when nobody was working. The IROC always won. Just a better handler. But that 'Stang was scrappy. Lotsa drivin' sideways.

I love the refreshed Fox Bodies of the late 80s and early 90s. They were such beautiful cars. They were fast and fun. The sound of the 302 was pure muscle. They are so easy to play with. They were true Mustangs. I miss the days of thick radials. Unlike today's Mustangs, these Mustang GT's had thick rubber that gave the car a muscular look and made it ready for burnouts and drifting. The only other Mustang that I feel has the attitude and design of the original 60s Mustangs is the 2005-2009. Ford did a good job with the sixth gen. It has a closer resemblance to the 1969-1970 Mustang than the 2010-2014. The only con is the sixth gen Mustang was when the Stang became more of a track car/sports car than a true muscle car.

You know people hate on the probe but the v6 manual gt versions was a real fun car it had some decent low end power. And the use of interior space was well utilized, lots of space for a small car. I think they also look cool, and had pop up headlights. A friend of mine had one.

Thanks for posting this video Bill! Like many others, this has brought back some great memories of my 89’ GT. Same interior and exterior color, but with the turbine wheels. And it was a great deal at $12.5K off the showroom floor. Simple to work on and fun as hell to drive. I do miss that car!
