I remember reading way back years ago that HxH fans who read the manga found out Alluka's name before she was even properly introduced (the manga hadn't gotten this far in the story yet at that point). That family photo is shown with one kid facing away who hasn't been introduced back when and the fans noticed the naming pattern for the Zoldyck kids and figure it out from there - name connecting and all have the letters "llu" (it was probably made easier by the fact that Alluka's name is in between Killua's and Kalluto's). I always thought this was pretty cool.

09:10 I feel like we found a new word that Luke isn't familiar with. Covenant. (Roughly synonymous with contract.) As for what it means in this context, it has been explained in the series a few times. You gain power by placing restrictions and/or paying a price for your ability. Gon's covenant was to offer "everything" for his power-up, so releasing this contract can only be done with a superior power. A power superior to what Pitou considered a threat to Meruem himself. And even then, the risk to Gon is not negligible. Killua went for something that is pretty much absolute in HxH. Literal wish fulfillment. 16:00 You mention the monkey's paw quite regularly. This form of wish-granting is way more twisted. Monkey's paw pales in comparison. 17:45 Alluka is a girl. But the dark-eyed "thing" ("Nanika" as addressed by Silva, which more or less translates to "something") is special. Given the japanese way of handling pronouns, I'm not certain that a gender was actually assigned by the author... or is even relevant to that persona. The mix-up of male and female pronouns in this episode is likely used to reflect this.

Pronouns aside, the family and the butlers do refer to Alluka as male. Illumi calls her his brother, Tsubone calls her young master, etc. And Killua does refer to Alluka as female, calling her his sister and saying that she is a girl. It may or may not be relevant to the entity that's fused with Alluka, but it is very relevant to the conflict between Killua and his family. Killua is the only one who treats her differently even compared to the butlers like Tsubone who otherwise treat her very well.

Exactly, any other "theory" some freaks push around just destroys the whole concept of the character. We never had these discussions about Alluka in ANY forum before 2014. Everyone knew she was a girl who was denied of existence by her family both from being a girl and being the host of Nanika. But when political motivation started to take over the internet people who pushed incest in HxH also started to push this idea that Alluka was a boy. I was on MyAnimeList when this started, first they started to push Illumi x Killua incest, then started to push Killua x Alluka incest, and them started to push that Alluka was actually a boy. These people are disgusting.

It’s misinformation. Since Japanese has no gender of nouns and verbs in the first place, there is no need to consider the gender of objects.The only exception are ships, which are referred to as female due to Western influences.

I always understood it as Alluka is a female but the black eyed Alluka is the male, what the rest of the family refers too as a 'thing' not a human being...so they don't consider alluka as part of the family only the black eyed alluka, I might be wrong probably.

They both are Female, Alluka is a girl, Nanika is a creature who uses a host, if the host is male the creature is male, if the host is female the creature is female. The host is female, the creature is female. There is no each one is each one. They are both girls and Nanika got most of her personality from Alluka.

@@SpeedKing-t7n think the official story is that the brother that is in the black komono when gon leoreo and kurapika visit in the beginning of the anime. he dresses like a girl because killua loved playing with alluka who was a girl so he dressed like her in order to get killua's attention. so alluka is in fact female. also I think something is male and since that's what the parents think alluka is and not 2 people they call her a guy as they are talking about something not alluka. basically they know fuck all about what she is and are being pricks towards her. killua brings up a good point too. she just grants the wishes the one who makes the wish is at fault.

It’s known that the Zoldyck family of this generation ONLY HAS MALE CHILDREN, which is why everyone uses masculine pronouns when referring to them. Based on this, it can be said that Alluka was born male. However, Killua (being the only one who respects and loves her) uses feminine pronouns for her and even says later in the series that she’s a girl 🥺❤️‍🩹. Many people got confused because of the pronouns used in the animation, but it’s much clearer in the manga. Still, there was confusion surrounding Alluka (and even Kalluto, as some thought he was a girl, lmao). However, it’s established that the Zoldyck family only has male children.
