@RossCastro

Well, this car chase scene couldn't be made today not because of CGi but because majority of this scene was filmed in an illegal and absolutely dangerous manner. The director taunted the stunt driver about his abilities and got him to drive recklessly up to 90mph over 20 blocks in New York in order to film majority of the footage in this scene. The train's speed in this scene was thanks to a $40,000 bribe (and a one way ticket to Jamaica.) to a NYC Transit Worker. This scene is amazing but it absolutely couldn't be shot this way WITH or WITHOUT CGI just because the massive amount of potential danger and recklessness involved.

I love the editing and composition in the cinematography, specially at 4:46 with the closeup shot of gene, then the wide shot of the woman, to a narrow off centerd extreme closeup of genes eyes, to the quick narrow zoom of the lady screaming silently, to a closeup of gene screaming silently, and then a wide shot as the car goes over the curve, so intense and so masterfully edited. Probably my favorite scene in the whole movie.

Stop and think for a moment. The whole scene really started with Hackman spotting the sniper running and Hackman coming down from the roof and began the chase on foot. Think of the quality and an impeccable “arc” in the scene, a small “film within the film”! Starting with the foot chase with EVERY subsequent scene shot immediately one after next, there was a dramatically increased incremental drama, building and adding until the demise of the villain. Mr Friedkin was a fantastic genius to craft that whole scene, all of it mind you, without one note of any musical instrument or orchestration (‘cept the las)!No disrespect here but I kept thinking ‘Hitchcock, Hitchcock’. That was often his magisterial film prowess.

At 3:43 that is a "real" car accident. From IMDB: "The car crash during the chase sequence, at the intersection of Stillwell Ave. and 86th St., was unplanned and was included because of its realism. The man whose car was hit had just left his house a few blocks from the intersection to go to work and was unaware that a car chase was being filmed. The producers later paid the bill for the repairs to his car."

That conductor is an actual conductor. The actor who was supposed to play the conductor didn't show up on the day that scene was filmed. That was also a real motorman. The Transit Authority would not allow an actor to operate a subway train. Also, if you look quickly at 3:58, you'll see 4572 displaying an N up front instead of a B, which was the correct letter marking for a West End train at the time. 4572-73 were normally assigned to the N line and didn't have B signs.

Jackie Gleason was Friedkins' first choice for the role of Popeye and Gleason wanted the role, but studio said no as Gleason was in one of the biggest bombs ever for Fox-Gigot. Friedkin considered Paul Newman and Steve McQueen for the role but their salaries were out of the budget. He went with Hackman who at the time had never had a leading role.

There is a slight error in continuity. The 25th Ave. station is above 86th St., just around the curve where the West End line turns from Stillwell Ave. It is just after the spot where that Ford smashes into the LeMans. And if you look closely, the train directly above Hackman during that crash is an R-32 consist while the train he's chasing is an R-42 consist.

Love Gene Hackman. Everyday, rough around the edges man.. Not some artificial pumped up gym rat. The film business has become rediculous. Never go to a theater anymore.

The car chase was filmed without obtaining the proper permits from the city. Members of the NYPD's tactical force helped control traffic. But most of the control was achieved by the assistant directors with the help of off-duty NYPD officers, many of whom had been involved in the actual case. The assistant directors, under the supervision of Terence A. Donnelly, cleared traffic for approximately five blocks in each direction. Permission was given to literally control the traffic signals on those streets where they ran the chase car. Even so, in many instances, they illegally continued the chase into sections with no traffic control, where they actually had to evade real traffic and pedestrians. Many of the (near) collisions in the movie were therefore real and not planned (with the exception of the near-miss of the lady with the baby carriage, which was carefully rehearsed). A flashing police light was placed on top of the car to warn bystanders. A camera was mounted on the car's bumper for the shots from the car's point-of-view. Hackman did some of the driving but the extremely dangerous stunts were performed by Bill Hickman, with Friedkin filming from the backseat. Friedkin operated the camera himself because the other camera operators were married with children and he was not.
